Hello house, I am currently a Masters students [English] in Nigeria, soon to graduate. I intend to apply for PhD studies in Canada but I have some questions: 1. Are there schools with affordable tuition or any that is tuition free? 2. What are the likely schools I can apply for? 3. What is the typical cost of accomodation like [in naira]? 4. Can I work as a teaching assistant or lecturer while undertaking my PhD research? 5. Is it easy to get a visa for PhD studies? 6. How much is flight fee [cheapest range]? 7. Are there academic opportunities for PhD holders ? 8. What are the salient factors I must take into consideration? 9. How much do I need to survive on a monthly basis as a PhD student? 10. Do I need ielts or toefl or gre and those other exams since I read English? Please do well to tell me anything I haven't asked already. I know the questions are many. You don't have to answer all, just tell me the one you have an authoritative idea on. I really appreciate! Thanks! |

Royat1:Why another UG in the first place? Is not that it's not possible but risky, you should have applied for both then use the PGC,/ PGD to apply for Visa then change when you get there if you want to. If you calculate total funds for the UG it should x2 of the PGC/PGD and I want to believe your sponsor is not hour parent. Try and apply for the GCMS you will know where to start. Sorry about that bro |

Royat1:Actually am going for 2courses one is certificate course for 15weeks and the other PGC which I planned to defer to May next year if I get my TRV. Paper route or online route package well tackle the lapses then apply |

thesoj:Seen the posts and trust me, I have Googled this like a hungry glutton. I believe some of my questions can best be answered from personal experience and firsthand knowledge. I have even written schools and they keep giving me nothing concrete. |

Some of your questions are trivial and show that you need to browse the English department websites of some of the schools in Canada that offer an English Phd. You will get more responses to your questions if you pared them down to the ones for which you can't find easy answers by searching Google. For example, you ask if ielts/gmat/toefl is needed, you would easily find the answer to this by browsing various English department websites. You also ask if you can work as a teaching assistant or lecturer while studying for a Phd; you would know the answer to this if you had done some very basic searches. Just fyi, a PhD is a research degree so you might wanna consider putting those research skills to work now. In any case, let me answer the questions that you might not easily find straightforward answers to: 1. Are there schools with affordable tuition or any that is tuition free? No school is tuition free, but some are cheaper than others. e.g. Memorial University of Newfoundland, Brandon University, etc. Use google to find more. 3. What is the typical cost of accomodation like [in naira]? $400CAD-$600CAD/month 5. Is it easy to get a visa for PhD studies? With a well-packaged app, yes. 7. Are there academic opportunities for PhD holders ? Yes, Canada needs professors and researchers tho nothing is guaranteed. 9. How much do I need to survive on a monthly basis as a PhD student? CIC says you need $10,000CAD/year for living expenses. fratermathy: 4 Likes |

Pls i will like to know if at the POE its possible to be given a 3 years study permit when you are holding a one year temporary resident visa. I just need to get the timing of the change right....is it better to change when one is in canny or it can be done as soon as the TRV lands.... NB This is because i am going to change to a three year advanced diploma when i get the TRV but i used a one year PGC to apply for the TRV |
