hello fellow Nairalanders.. This is really pathetic.
I am a travel agent. I booked a flight for a client who is in Russia, wanting to come back to Lagos later this month.
I booked on Emirates website, and the amount was in Russian rubbles which is 28,000 +. And emirates have an option to view the amount in Naira....which is about N84,000+.. Well, I double checked and saw that there was no hidden charges, even at the point of making the payment with my Zenith bank Mastercard. To my amazement, zenith bank charged me N144,000 for a ticket that is N84,000 plus. I was so shocked cos my house rent had just been forcefully taken by Zenith bank.
I immediately called Emirates and the Indian voiced lady simply told me that Emirates would not charge me more than what I saw online while making my payment, that I should talk to my bank. I called Zenith bank and they tried explaining that the usually add a markup figure and stuffs like that....kpe when Emirates come for their money, they would refund me my balance... I spent over 4k talking to both parties on phone, asking and begging for explanations... So finally, 2 days after, which is today Friday, zenith bank debited me N133,982 for a ticket that say N84,000+ on emirates website... Thats N50,000 difference. Still shocked, I called zenith immediately to explain, and all they could say was exchange rate exchange rates.... That they deal with dollar and all sorts of talks... That I bought my ticket in russian money, which was converted to dollars, before they converted it to naira and charged my MasterCard....
House, no matter the conversion rates, I see no reason why there would be a 50,000 naira difference... Av sent mails to zenith bank, and all they could say was this...

Dear Esteemed Customer,
Thnk you for contacting us.

Please note that the transaction in question was debited based on the prevailing rate on the date of settlement.

In addition, when a transaction is not done in Dollars, a conversion process takes place from Ruble to Dollars then the final debit in Naira.

Thank you for choosing Zenith Bank

Please what do I do o... Am soso confused right now.. Can this make FP pls... So fellow nairalanders would not fall for this fraud by zenith bank...

I think your mistake is not knowing the exchange rates, online sites when converting to naira use official rates ie $= 199-early 200s, when in reality nigrian banks charge way more 290-315, so the estimate in the site is far from what the bank will charge u. I stand to be corrected tho, advice is know your bank rates and always check out in dollars if available.

If you're so sure you were cheated, you can report them to CBN. Zenith bank will be the one calling and begging you this time around.
