Palpable tension is at present threatening the peaceful coexistence of the people of Okpananam Community, near Asaba Delta State over herdsmen alleged planned attack on its resident.

While secret meetings of the herdsmen have been uncovered by the vigilance group in the area, the Ugoani of Okpanam, HRM Mbanefo Micheal Ogaoni, yesterday told journalists that the suspected Fulani herdsmen’s in Umuomake Village and Obodogwugwu farmland in Okpanam so allegedly display guns and arrows.

He said, “Our vigilante group which monitors the herdsmen’s activities in the community uncovered their meetings and reported to us.” Disclosing that in 2014 he wrote a letter to the then state governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan and copied the police commissioner on the wanton destruction of Okpanam farm lands and incessant attacks on the people. Described the Fulani herdsmen activities as a case of colonization of part of Okpanam land, the Ugoani said that the criminalities of the herdsmen include destroying traps and stealing animals caught by the traps, destroying of crops, molesting and raping married and unmarried women in the area.

He said “Worrisome and nauseating is the fact that cattle rustlers have illegally acquired our land around Ala-Obi between Iyi Uku Stream and Aja-Obi Umuomake Village, Obodogwugwu and have set up permanent settlement in the areas”.

Meanwhile, the state’s commissioner of police, Mr. Alkali Baba Usman has assured the communities of police protection of lives and properties, saying that the police will bring to book any evil perpetrator.

A bill that forces herdsmen to confine their livestock to cattle ranches will go a long way. If poultry farmer can feed their own livestock in an enclosed area, the cattle rearers should . . .

A simple pointer to the fact that our government is worthless. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that ranching is the way out of this mess. Clashes between herdsmen and rural farmers have been going on for decades, yet government couldn't come up with this simple solution.
Get these herdsmen to buy or rent farmlands to erect ranches. Teach them to make fodders for their cattle. How difficult can this be, please?

Haven't we had enough deaths from these clashes?

Fulani's can mess everywhere but not with the Niger Delta. The youths won't find it funny. The repercussion of an attempted attack or disorder won't be child's play

Now there is sufficient information to forestall any attacks, the police will not get busy and at least ransack those fulani settlements and rid then of all lethal weapons. If they strike now it's news reports we'll be hearing.

The state governor, LG chairman and traditional rulers had better mobilise and arm their men to neutralise those fulani criminals and even get them out of the area illegally acquired.

Mr Traditional ruler inform your LGA Chairmen, your Senator and House of Rep. Members. Inform the Governor too. When I mean inform I do not mean to just write letters. Go and see them properly.

At the end of these meetings I expect you to be ready enough to ask someone the road to Awka, Nnewi and that other border town between Abia/Rivers where guns are fabricated.

If you need directions on how to "enter" a bus please let us know and we will direct you.

This is why Americans will never give up their freedom/rights to protect their own life and property.

I read something like the vigilante monitoring their movements so the only thing the vigilante of that community does is monitoring not protecting the community. By now we suppose to be reading how the vigilante arrested and hand over the armed fulani herdsmen to the police not what I am reading now

So many centrifugal forces are threatening to pull this country apart. There is a need to deal with this incipient crisis before we have an inter ethnic war on our hands. Cattle herders should be taught modern day rearing methods. Herders should be advised to band together and set up ranches to feed their cattle. The itinerant movement of cows from one end to the other even makes them vulnerable to diseases. The country is toying with a tinderbox if this crisis is not promptly addressed.
