Expected.

The thing is....the Naira won'trise because of budget. The naira would only rise if there is enough foreign exchange to buffer it up.

And the only way to get a stable source of forex is by spending more on power, transport and education, so that we can develop an innovation based economy.

Agric has had its day.As has oil.

It was the CBN guy who raised the stakes saying Naira will be stronger as soon as budget is signed. He did not say after 24 hours or 4 months. So individuals can take it as they think soon enough. And rightly so.

Govt spending money it does not have doesn't make the currency stronger.

Draconian policies also don't. Liquidating dollar savings means the govt cannot be trusted to protect your money, whatever currency it is legally saved in.

Creating jobs, innovation, enabling business environment, diversified economy, increased FDI and a strong and independent judiciary do.

That's exactly the point.
That is why you can't have people 'warehousing' billions of dollars with banks with inadequate CRR and assets to keep such funds.

P.S. You, you know nothing, I read some of your comments . . . and I will be severely 'shortchanging' myself to have this kinda convo with you.

there is nothing magical about it. Simple economics. It just shows the investors dont trust the budget . When news break, currencies all over the world react either positively or negatively. For example, if they believe the signing of the budget will strengthen naira against dollar, speculators holding dollars will want to sell in anticipation of rise in naira. Investors can inject money into the system in anticipation of govt spending for their products and services. This can happen in minutes self. It has nothing to do with implementation. So, if the naira is not excited the budget is signed, it means investors dont believe in your budget and that is not too good a news
So you think just anyone posting must know what they are talking about?

Even release of employment figures in USA, Germany, UK, Japan, etc can wipe currency traders on the floor or make them big bucks within minutes. Here, the release of a long awaited "messianic" budget only caused a slight fall in Naira value.

Maybe the parrot taking news of budget signing to the markets is flying on its way. grin cheesy

It shows you know little or nothing about economics. One hour is enough for a reactionary impact on the value of any national currency All over the world, monumental /colossal economic or political decisions (one of which is budget signing ) trigger almost immediate market reactions but in the case of Nigeria, nothing changes.

Those economies you are comparing us with, do they reason like us?

Do we share their level of patriotic zeal?

Take a cursory look at some of the comments here, are there not self destructive?

We shouldn't allow political sentiments/frustration of the past to cloud our national vision for the future.

The writer is right, at least Naira suppose to react to either positive or negative news, temporary or permanent.

Patriotism seed only thrives on a ground that's enriched with manures of justice, fairness, sincerity of purpose, inclusiveness and upholding basic tenets of democracy.

But this administration, going by its selective judgment and persecution, vindictiveness, economic and political missteps, policy summersaults etc has not encouraged many citizens to believe in Nigeria's future. That's the truth unless we just want to continue with the voyage of pretence which we have always embarked on since 1960.

my friend went to one state to see his girlfriend, and decided to stroll with girlfriend when she wanted to buy tomatoes and other food stuff. As a man, he decided to foot the bills but when the tomato seller called the price, my friend thought his girlfriend and tomato seller had made plan to dupe him. He paid the bills but when he came back, the first thing he asked my sister was the price of tomatoes. It was after that that my guy cool down and shouted CHANGE!

All you listed didn't start with this administration, except holding people to account aka persecution.

If previous administrations had held their predecessors to account the issue of "persecution" would not be seen as such.

Budget is different from good living or implementation. Beautiful budget is not fine houses, roads, light etc.
