OP u are not just an accountant, u have a double Hons B.Sc(Ed) which fits u into d Accounting profession and teaching profession. U did same courses with Pure accounting student bt the elective courses were replaced with core educational courses.

I did Business Education(management) in school, that doesn't make me inferior to those that did Business Administration in school, mention any core Management course in Biz admin I did it and added educational courses, it was in my final year I did 6courses. 4rm year 1-3 I offered 9-10 courses per semsester

the Teaching Profession in Nigeria is not regulated if not, u won have said this thing u just said.

Change ur believe that u are not an accountant because u didn't do pure accounting
inferiority complex spotted!

I'm learning from this... I'm studying business education. What I think OP should do is
You should further your studies if you have the funds to do that or just settle for a teaching job... I said so because teaching job for you will come faster and better since that's your field.
I have OND in banking and finance and now a degree in Business Education on the way. Teaching would be my 2nd option.

Please, fellow nairalanders so long a person graduated from Faculty of Education in a University and offered courses like business education, economics education, chemistry education, health education, physics education, e.t.c makes the person have an added advantage because he/she offered same courses with the pure graduates from their various departments. Note: In ICAN, a graduate of Business Education (Accounting) also has the option of exempting from the foundation level because he already did those courses in the university. Teaching is just one of the advantage and not the only one.

Pls forget this career path thingy for 9ja cos d work no plenty out there. I studied d same course just like u and during my job hunt, I met so many discouraging advice from friends and family. "Go teach" "Go do business" is all I hear from people. I started as a Sales Manager with one small company, from there to one of the top commercial banks, and now with one of the foremost examining body in Africa (with rest of mind). Although I did some professional courses added to my MBA.
So my brother....don't feel inferior. Stay focus and develop ursef more, and with God on ur side.....U will be successful.

I'm a fresh graduate, I majored in Business Education (Accounting Option) in one of Nigeria's foremost University. I am someone who believes in making a difference and not just earning a pay.

I'm quite started with the way employers view my course as though it is irrelevant to the workplace. Hence, I think I need a defined career for myself.

Also, taking Accounting as a career is a no-no for now because I didn't study pure Accounting and going for ICAN isn't possible now due to paucity of funds (though, planning to further when I get a job).

Thanks in anticipation of your response.

Bro u actually studied a beautiful course, but u seen to under rate it.
No employer is looking at ur course in anyway, it's d mindset u hv towards d course dat makes u interpret situations wrongly.

I also studied Business Education Accounting option, and I currently work in the Bank.

U know that course is broad, and expose u to a lot of things. It's a course that helps u become innovative, so by dis, u shud never be broke.

Bro whatever u love doing, start doing it in a professional way, while u apply ur business sense to it.

some people will be like OP you have both bsc and b.ed, you can use your bsc to apply for accounting job, me I will just be like these people are joker.

Firm in most cases always see education graduate as those that are low on IQ. They will rather accept Bsc physics as an audit trainee than accepting B.ed in accounting related course as an audit trainee.

While u search for a better job, settle down with your teaching. Apply for ICAN, don't go for lecture o. Gather enough free materials, as much as possible, with your ICAN, u have an added advantage and u may be lucky to get a better job.

Tell us how u got the bank job. Its possible u know someone. Or you have an additional certificate or you are one of the few lucky ones.

I know of a bank that does not accept B.ed and funny enough that's the only thing they don't accept. They even accept OND.

God help those who help themselves. May God direct you. We have similar case here, I had an NCE certificate in Business Education (Accounting) option and i’ve been working with my NCE before I applied for study leave for my B.Sc which I study Cooperatives Management. By the grace of God I’ll go for my Msc in management soon. After that I will apply for lecturing and who knows I can still become a PROFESSOR in life because that is my dream. Remain blessed

Young man, you should try and read the ops post and understand before commenting. He had a BSc.ed degree, not a Bed degree. They are very different. My first degree was also a BSc. ed degree in Physics. I thought for 6 months while applying for other jobs. After then, I have been working in the oil and gas for over 8 years now. I only just started my MSc. in Operations & SCM in a prestigious UK university last year. After 7 years working in the O & G, I did a professional course which lead to the field I'm in currently in my MSc.

Yes, there is always an atom of grace in every career opportunity, especially in Nigeria. But the fact remains that a BSc. ed degree is not the same as a Bed. degree.

Nice one bro., not every nairalander you can reply but your respond is beautiful... some ppl here doesn't even have SSCE but very good in condemning those that are trying to achieve. continue to wait for your parent before you can become somebody in life. my parents were all alive when i finish my SSCE, they were still alive when i had my NCE. alive but poor still what i eat in school dey provide it and i continue to sell different type of things such as original honey, grandnut, maize plus gari my business was for school fees alone. i wanted them to taste good life after my education but my mother died as soon as i got job with my NCE. Today i am a graduate and i will not stop there Insha Allah.

It is a common phenomenon that most business education undergraduates and graduates still don't know their worth. I am a 300l student of business education and to some extent I can say some things about the field, business education is a 2-in-1 course where we have Education for business and Education about business. Education for business aspect of it enables one to acquire relevant competencies for working in different organization, that's why we have several options in business edu such as (Accounting, marketing, office tech e.t.c). Education about business enables you to be well grounded in any business you venture into because of the management training you have acquired .
To the Op,pls try to revisit your interest you are both functionable in accounting and the teaching field. I can tell u very clearly that my business education lecturers still lecture in dept of accounting here in my school, I know one of them has an audit firm and still a Fellow chartered accountant (FCA). As I am studying business education, I have planned that, when I graduate I will take ICAN exam,,hopefully get a job in one of the top 4(kpmg,PWC...) and work as an accountant through out my career.
I am a business education (marketing option) 300l student

Bro, i get you but who told you that Accounting is a No No for you. Your certificate carries a BSc in Education in Business Education (Accounting); (I.e BSc. Ed. BE) and not BEd. BE. It's double honours, you can apply & work as an accountant if you truly know what an Accounting Job entails. Another thing, equip yourself with varieties of skills, most especially microsoft excel & quickbooks. Job opportunities abound for you my dear. If you graduated with 2.1 then you don't have to bother too much cause the Big 4's e.g PWC, Deloitte, e.t.c are looking for you.

P.S: Do not limit yourself by what you studied in school, it's just a little representation of our abilities.
op digest this well..

I've been a bit confused ever since as I'm not sure of the next step to take. All I've been getting are primary and secondary schools teaching offers which I'm not too keen about. Please advice me.

Get it straight! Superiority should be your watchword NOT exhibiting inferiority complex. A career in Business Education is great, you were trained to be flexible, versertile, and relevant in virtually every org most esp the profit making ones. Every management discipline is an offshoot of Business Studies, and that is what makes you versatile so that you can be able to cope in every circumstance you find yourself which is therefore a plus not only in labour market but also to be able to useful to yourself. If you want to consolidate or shift your degree later, you may go for a specialized Master Degree or a Professional Program eg in Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Human Resource Management,MBA with a specialization,ICT (Business Intelligence,Data Management, etc) etc. The curriculum of first degree actually prepares you to have general knowledge of a particular discipline after which you will now specialise in Master level while Ph.D handles a TOPIC under the specialised discipline. Funny enough, most pple end up doing a job other than what they were trained for in sch. So, Business Education is not restricted to only teaching jobs, the sky is the limit, you are a trained problem-solver, go and rule your world...Best of luck!

Go register for ACCA.
It is an International Professional course that is highly rewarding and lucrative and not all that costly to do.

My friend. You sound upset. I apologize if calling you a young man made you feel terrible, which probably means you're old and I've learnt to always respect elders. I am a young man and as such, assumed you are too. My bad.

Now that you've asked, I'll educate you. B. ed degrees are awarded by colleges of education or the adult education departments in universities. Its a professional teacher's degree and is awarded in any specification, i.e. english, science, arts courses and etcetera. As such, they offer more of educational and teachers' professional courses at the degree level. A BSc ed. degree on the other hand is awarded in Universities and offer more of the specific professional courses as core and educational courses as electives. Graduates in this field can pass for teachers as well as other related fields. They have an edge over other fields of study while applying for jobs in the teaching field, just as the others have an edge over them while applying for jobs in other professional fields. But believe me, everyone has an opportunity when it comes to occupation because its God who decides your occupation (whatever puts food on your table) even if you decide your profession (whatever you study in school).

My friend, you studied a very good and useful course. Congrats. For the MSc. it depends on the course, your first degree graduation grade and the school. Getting an MSc is great if you can afford it. Take the chance ASAP. If you want to move to a pure engineering, most schools will require you do a pgd first even if you had a 2:1. But for material Physics, Geophysics, Electronics and etc, with a 2;2, you can get an MSc directly. It depends on you! Better still, you can get a better education abroad (MSc) if you can afford it. I assure you, the skies will not limit you. Finally, at this stage of your life, you need to know that life is a function of grace. You need God to decide what will put food on your table. as such, ensure a very good relationship with Him. He'll direct your path. You can inbox me your email add. I would be glad to be of assistance wherever possible. God bless you.

The old man was meant to be a kind of humour.

I believe you are getting it wrong.First, college of education does not award B.ed, they award NCE. Colleges of education these days are used as satellite campus by some university, ACE is in affiliation with OAU and FCE osiele with UI.

Looking at it logically, how can I be a student of a faculty and my faculty courses/dept will be elective while my teaching subject course from other faculty will be compulsory. Bros think am.
