Kano – The newly established Dangote Tomato Processing Factory in Kadawa, Kano State, has suspended production, its Managing Director, Alhaji Abdulkadir Kaita, said. He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Friday that the company, which commenced production in February, had stopped production due to the lack of raw materials. He said that the company found it necessary to suspend production because there was no fresh tomatoes to process. He added that most of the tomato farms in Kano, Jigawa, Plateau, Katsina and Kaduna states were affected by a pest popularly known as “Tuta Absoluta” which killed all the tomato species there. The managing director noted that the pest had destroyed tomato farms in the affected states, making the price of the perishable commodity to go up. The tomato processing factory boss, however, said production would commence during the next irrigation season, emphasising that the company had the capacity to process 120 tonnes of fresh tomatoes per day at full capacity.Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/05/dangote-tomato-processing-company-suspends-production/

the company choose not to grow it's own tomatoes. The plan is to support and create a ready market for tomato farmers in and around kano.

The supply chain was not properly planned to guarantee all year supply to the factory despite the infestation suffered by the farms. Knowing he is guaranteed steady supply of milk from numerous dairy farmers co-operatives all year round that is why Dangote s setting up a multi-billion powder milk plant in Kenya. After production he exports them to Nigeria knowing that Kenyans don't like powder milk.

Well I think the management is not really bother about solving the problem but concerned about making an impact in the society with the company. Had been it was to solve problem they will definitely source for raw tomatoes elsewhere. Ymodulos went extra miles across border simply because he wanted to solve the tomatoes problem. Long life Ymodulos

There are certain things you can't plan for.

As an agricultural consultant, we got the wind about the incoming virus. Here in Abeokuta, OGADEP advocates for the green house plantation for tomatoes to curtail and or minimize the virus. They even went ahead for demonstrations along the OGUN STATE police headquarters for farmers to come, see and emulate. They even offered the new hybrid ones that will resist the virus to the minimum damage- no one did anything.
Now, the virus is here at last--
Many wondered why tomato became scarce, different theories were flying around...
But the truth remains with the learned- begomoviruses!!!

Don't compare Yoruba states to boko haram states please. Wetin dem sabi? They think agriculture is just about seed + soil + water.
