First bring out all the fish and wash the pond thoroughly, pump water back in to two feet, if you can lay your hands on blagdon anti fungai and bacteria or malachite green, if not use tetracyclin and chloraphenical with salt. They should be fine
Thanks a lot Sir. I have tried my best to get melacchite green and blagdon but all to no avail. I even travelled to Ibadan to get them some weeks ago but all I got were oxy-furavit, fish biotic and livestovit and formalin. Can I use formalin pls?

Well done Mr. Excelsior. Salute to a super moderator, peacemaker and fish-farmer emeritus.
On many occasions your maturity and selflessness has kept this thread alive even more than the op. Some selfish ones would have preferred to start their thread.
Coming back to this thread and reading your contributions gives me hope in the goodness that lies within Nigeria and Africa at large.
Hmmmm. My bible says peacemakers shall inherit the earth. May your days be long and happy Mr Excelsior. Least I forgot Goodluck in your Academic pursuit. God bless you sir.
na so una dey take create problem. why all the appellation? my friend, every contributor had kept the thread alive till date and we give ALL GLORY TO GOD for making it happen and keeping us alive even until now. The op had and is still doing a great job in association with everyone and i don t see bases for any comparison my brother.

Any one that is angry at the good works many selfless individuals are doing here in assisting aspiring entrepreneurs and for consolidation of our communal knowledge can start his/her on thread. Nairaland will accommodate it because there is always room for topics.

About peacemakers, that should be Matthew 5:9, it says they shall be called the children of God. Disagreement will/might come, but we should just endeavor to not destroy things.

With the way you praise man, i begin to think maybe na you dey praise our leaders that make them dey do error at times?(laugh)

Thank you very much for the prayers. I say a big AMEN to it.

My academics, God is indeed faithful and i appreciate you, God bless sir

Isolate two dozen or so of your fish into a seperate tank and test the new feed on them, by comparing their growth with that of the coppens-fed fish. Who knows, you may discover a more economical way to feed your fish.

Thanks a lot. I have really learnt so much here. Please I have a challenge. I am a first timer in the fish pond thing. My fishes Are 3 month old.

When I started, i was changing water once in two weeks cos the water wasn't even smelling annd the fishes were comfortable.

After one month, I decided to roof the pond with zink and chicken net. Since then, I now change water every 4 days cos of the offensive smell that disturb the next compound where I stay.

So I want to know if it's the roofing that has caused this problem or do fishes normally Smell this way?

Thanks please I will appreciate your responses.

I remember we had a chat on whatsapp, first of all wash the pond thoroughly the picture of the pond you sent to me showed the pond is too dirty, increasing your water level a bit to give the fishes more space. More so stop throwing the feed on all four corners of the pond it pollutes the water hence the smell and also reduces dissolve oxygen. Apply spot feeding choose a particular spot to feed the feed. Am pretty sure the offensive smell will reduce drastically. Cheers boss

Hi fellow farmers, its no secret that the recent increase in fuel price will affect every aspect of our lives and operating costs of our farms. Its high time we up our game in terms of price of catfish on our farms. I don't think its a taboo for catfish price to increase because it really baffles me that price of fish has remained virtually constant for years despite the fact the fish feed and other operating costs have constantly been on the rise.
#We should start selling our catfish of 800g and above for N550 - N600 per kilo, while fish below 800g sold for N500 per kilo.
If we all pass the word around and we can be strict on our farms, we should be able to increase the farmgate price of fish. Nothing is impossible and catfish farmers even if on small scale level should be able to live as comfortably as their counterparts with white collar jobs

N. B. Increasing the farmgate price of fish is just one way to alleviate the high operating costs in recent times. We should also look inwards and try to reduce our operating costs in all aspects.

doctor most times when i see that we should raise the cost of fish prices, i observed that most likely it is coming from your stable(laugh).

Indeed as belexyfarms wrote,it is time for every fish farmers and business men/women to see down to consider the market forces with the reality of the circumstances or situation on ground and re appraise the cost at which they will market their products. It is also important to note that those in the hatchery business should also up their prices in tangent with the realities that we are in presently. This simple step should always be evaluated periodically if any farmer/business man/woman want to remain in business.

If your products are good, i don't see why you should sell cheap and neither will i encourage exploitation. Buka is different from biggs and we see in the prices, due to the comfort you enjoy and a serene environ.

In essence if you don't want to go back to your village, consider how you will reduce your production cost and don't sell anyhow because when you are buying back, the sellers of materials you need wont understand that you sold cheap.

All the best and probably maybe we should discuss possible price for fingerlings, post fingerlings, juveniles also. The least i had sold fingerlings is N13,post N18 and juveniles N25-30, jumbo N45 and good ones. People will buy, when you can give them their desire. For the market women, you can beat them by not showing desperation and not stocking the numbers of fishes that you cant afford to feed adequately( and an allowance of at least a month if sales becomes delay).

No need to ask me if i have seeds now, i don't have and i am not producing presently.

just what I was pondering over some few moments ago. Just got back from Agege and trust me prices of feeds and materials are crazily high. I understand some farmers are now selling 700/kg. For me, my seeds uses to be #10 fingerlings, #12 post and #20 juve, melange 430-450, 800g -1kg was 520, but trust me prices have changed going forward. My fear is that u will still find a lot of farmers who might compromise quality and can sell cheap. Y my fear? Not becos it affects my biz cos honestly meeting demand is even a challenge at d moment but becos we will definately find some who will fall prey and then they will com here to tell stories that touch. So please all be wise in ur dealings!! Regards

@Belexyfarms,i share in ur opinion, but why a uniform price is not visible right now is mahnly due to d fact dat the fishery sector is not well monitored.e.g.if d fishery society of nigeria(fison)can find a way 2regulate d sector to make fish farming more proffessional, just like u have in accounting were u have 2be a chattered accountant 4u 2b taking seriously, then u might want 2ask why nt fishery, what stop us 4rm having chattered fisheries personel that knws d nitty gritty of fish farming.not just any mungo park waking up in d morning&say he or she is a fish farmer.i ask can u just wake up&start parading urself as a lawyer or an accountant?without having pass tru law school&then call 2d bar, likewise an accountant u need 2b ICAN certified 2be taken serious.if d same principle is applied 2d fishery sector then we can have direction in d sector.i am nt saying one must be a fishery graduate 2pratice fish farming, but for sanity sake there shud be a working body that gives operating license 2intending fish farmers

If that can be done we can now think of having one uniform price in the sector, inrespective of the prices of fish feed or location. It will also help 2reduce quack from the sector 'internet fish farmers'that can not differentiate a male clarias gariepinus(catfish) from the female, just because they want fast money will be feeding on gullible citizens just 2extort them, thereby bringing d fishery sector 2disrepute.

there cannot be uniform price when it comes to food production. Areas of agriculture that can effectively be regulated are vet doctor, extension officers and APH workers, others can only be licensed.

That is why there is CAPRO etc. About quacks? what is the profession experience or qualification that would be use e.g all teachers without teacher training can be referred to as quack, irrespective of the level of qualification(degree) because they are not train teachers to impact knowledge.

Teaching like fish farming, poultry, piggery etc can be considered an occupation because unemployed graduate find them as last resort after no jobs. Until unemployment issue is solved, the nation should keep waiting for standard regulation

The yardsticks for production isn't like fuel, common source with parameters, in agric, it differs from local government to local government, from states etc

@excelsiofarms,i disagree with u on ur analysis that some graduates go into a noble proffession like fish farming because of unemployment which means they shouldnt do things right,i have a mantra which says whatever that is what doing should be done properlly.going tru the four walls of a higher institution should prepared u both mentally&otherwise in whatever field u find urself&u should be able 2make d best out of it.why?because u already have d basic foundation 2suceed in life.now if a young jobless engineer graduate wants 2become a fish farmer what stop him or her from getting the basic practical training from hatching to management etc. instead of just goin 2d internet to download all what nt and we be using thdt 2decieve people dat genuinely have interest in the proffession jst because he is a jobless graduate who wants 2makes ends meet.bt if dere is system dat checkmate practicing fish farmers, quacks wil b reduce 2d bearest minimum,in dat if u dont hav a practicing license,no one wil take u serious.

If my eyes are nt playing tricks on me.the answer 2ur question is bio-filter& one of their function is basically 2maintain water quality.e.g 2remove amonia, nitrites, solid particles from water.
