Hello, I have interest in plantain farming, kindly enlighten me on how to go about it
world1:
Hello everyone,
Am an Agribusiness Consultant based in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria.
My company is Natural Nutrient Limited.

LET'S DISCUSSED EVERYTHING ABOUT SETTING UP A PLANTAIN FARM.
What is a Plantain?
Plantains are a member of the banana family. They are a starchy, low in sugar variety that is cooked before serving as it is unsuitable raw.

Unlike starting other tree farms, starting a plantain farm and growing plantain are easier and less complicated.
Although growing plantain still requires ones attention, the level of skill required is not as intensive as other trees.
Here are a few guidelines in growing plantain and starting a plantain farm.

Step 1.
LAND PROCUREMENT
The first thing to consider in starting a plantain farm is looking for the right climate. Plantain cannot thrive in an environment that is too hot or too cold. The proposed land/soil for your plantain farm must be a well drain land that is rich and naturally fertilized but If such is not available, you can create compost and add chicken manure to your existing land.

Now that you have the land what next?

Okay. Make sure you know what to do with your produce after harvesting.

Below are the steps to take:
1. Go for a particular on the farm training so that you will be agronomically empowered.
2. Get a good arable land with excellent ph that supports plantain cultivation.
3. Do proper land clearing.
4. Spend on land preparation and soil treatment
5. Plant your wind breakers.
6. Get a good disease resistance hybrid plantain sucker. I recommend (Treated CGHS its Sold for N150 per sucker)
7. Plant your sucker using standard depth and width.
8. Make available a good alternative source of water for irrigation, you can start with rain but never you really on rain for you plantain plantation.
9. Follow the right plantain management procedures which includes: fertilization, pruning, weeding, de-suckering, worm and pest control.

If you can follow the above mentioned steps you will surely smile to your bank.

@world1, I have read this thread from page 1 through 15. I want to set up a 20acre farm for oilpalm and plantain. How do you think my plantain yield is going to be?

Then I saw you stated that the planting can be done at anytime of the year with proper irrigation. What type of irrigation technique would you recommend? How expensive is it?

Do you take up farm management or only help with setting it up?

Introducing free range rams, goats and chicken into my plantain farm.
Organic all the way.

Would the animals roam freely on the farm? and only spend the night in the shed created?

1. Your farm yield will be determined by a lot of things just follow the agronomy best practice procedures.
2. I use spray tube irrigation system
3. We don't do farm management for projects less than 10 heacters because it will be too expensive for the investor, what we do is to train the farm owner or his/her staffs on how to manage the farm.
