you are most welcome sir,
1. for melange stocking density let me break it down this way: some will argue that u can stock x2 of your pond capacity for grow out, but i will recommend x1.5 or at most x1.7. e.g if your pond can take 1000 fishes to table size, for melange u can stock 1500 or 1700 max. (assuming you are using a stagnant water system) effective spacing is key to ur success in this.(please read more on melange farming on agricnetwork)

2. Regarding time to feed, feed twice a day preferably between 8.am and 9.am when dissolved oxygen levels has started to rise. And not later than 6pm in the evening. feed to satiation but avoid wastage.

3. some great minds on this thread have been using formulated feeds and with wonderful results, so sure it can be used. (like i said this is just a model that works). is there 'only one way' of doing things? not always sir.

4. on advisable feed formula, please kindly review ablx's formula and modify where necessary.

i really don't know what is hard to swallow about harvesting melange in 2 and half months at least. on water management, please kindly review the thread carefully a lot has been written on that already so nothing new to add. if you are talking about system used, its not an RAS or constant flow through. its a stagnant water system and you change water when required. no additional forms of aeration was included. like i said, you can modify and even better this result. regards

Maybe you're not getting my point. I am not debating melange in 2 and half months. My fishes @ 2 months are already melange

What is really surprising is the quantity of feed used to achieve melange in your example above. Especially considering you were feeding to satiation and from my own personal experience, if I were to be feeding to satiation, they will generally consume more than what I give them (I use coppens feeding table).

We are all here to learn from each other, so pardon me if I wanted to know if I had missed somethingsomething

no issues bro sure we are all here to learn and help each other. happy u contributed cos i did talk about the fact that there are recommended feeding schedules (coppen included), but cos in reality most people don't use them hence d need to feed to satiation (which is usually discretional). n;b feeding to satiation is totally subjective if u ask me. i really don't know the quantity u stock, but definitely not d same as did in the model. also u should also understand that FCR of feeds vary and so using your feeding table and type of feed, honestly u may not use up to the quantity in this model. for the model i gave on this thread, we had remaining 4 bags of vital feed. i also have another example of someone who used vital all through and ended up spending 3months and using more bags. i am happy u can attest to achieving melange even in 2 months. so please its not a strict model u can modify and better it, in terms of results and expense. for me i don't use up to this quantity. i shared this experience cos it was the first time out for the client and i needed all (esp newbies) to see that it is indeed achievable and u can make money big time in this biz.

you can use aerators. but generally and naturally the introduction of fresh water into your pond will increase dissolved oxygen. so you should always change water as often as possible to increase DO. also avoid overfeeding cos feed sediment will reduce ur DO and also increase bacteria growth and activity which will also compromise the DO of ur pond.

if u have an oxygen meter, u can always measure ur water DO. but u can also pay attention to certain signs e.g fish hanging and low activity are also signs that ur pond DO is low.

Good afternoon my people, i just want to use this medium to thank selfless member of this forum who have been generous with information to young catfish farmers and i have been tutored by so many of you despite being far apart but your advise has been the light that illuminate the darkness world of fish farming.

One of my resolution to produce 50% of my feed by myself this year [2016] has been achieved with the designing of a locally produced grinding and pelletising machine that i now use to produce my rich pelletised feed. The 2 in 1 diesel machine uses one motor to drive the grinding as well as the pelletising machine and it has been very efficient.

My thanks goes to our professor in feed formulation, our amiable Ab1x for his contribution and advice on feed formula. I am very proud to announce that my 2mm feed with 40% fishmeal, 45% animal protein and 54.7 crude protein is less expensive compare to coppens 2mm. It is an eye opener that our local feeds if well formulated is far richer than the so called foreign feeds.

Is your pond close to some other ponds whose water hasn't been changed in the recent time? Or was there erosion/flood in ur pond direction after you changed ur water? All the same, pls change the water ASAP.

they have their own advantages too. If you want to reduce them, increase d salinity of your pond by adding some salt,this affects their reproduction(might not necessarily kill them). You also have to consider that in your process of wanting to deal with d tilapias, you dont over salt your ponds because of d catfish. Alternatively, u can be cropping/harvesting every 3weeks(tilapias),the latter is fair. Not to forget that your catfish would also be feeding on baby tilapias & eggs. You are most likely to get more fish weight of the two breeds than someone that is doing catfish only

Maybe it's as a result of your fish getting bigger and eating more food, thereby producing more waste. My ponds smell worse than it used to and I still change water in the same number of days I used to, that is every other day.

Just concluded my second degree and decided to explore fish farming.. Starting with 500 fingerings..
My brother who's a farmer suggested that 200k will be able to cater for the stock throughout the period before sale...

I plan to start soon.


Please due to the present economy status will the 200k still be able to cover the cost of grooming the 500 fingerings...

it depends on the weight of fish u intend to harvest, before now we are advised to budget 300naira to feed a fish to harvest but right now cost of feed av increased by more than 700naira at least,it also depends on the types of feed u intend to use truout this cycle

it depends, if the water flows continually u don't need to change water every time but if the water is stagnant u will need to change the water often

How do I apply this to my pond, I mean the frequency of application and quantity. It smells nice tho .

the qty to be applied is written on the pack, u can apply as often as u like, say every two weeks, or when u notice any event that stresses them
