purpleblood: Hey purpleblood, I think you are looking for an M1 visa (for vocational/technical studies). U should ask @lagosNIV on their thread here , https://www.nairaland.com/2991174/u.s-student-visa-f1-m1 They will be glad to help. (but if you say the course is 1mth, maybe it's a B1 visa) Now what you are asking for is not a big deal. You want to go for a course that will improve your employability here in 9ja and in US, so go for it, connect with employers and return home to get a H1B visa which will allow you successfully work in US. I think your career may fall under the categories that qualify for a H1B visa sponsored by a US employer (I'm not sure) but my problem with the H1B visa system is quota. It's already June I can bet the 10,000 visas slots per annum has already been filled so you prospective employer has to start filing paperwork for you early enough to meet up with next year. See below a prospective US employer that can sponsor a H1B visa for you and salary scale 1 Like

overlord77: What I understand is he wants to convert to FAA, look for a US job, return after the 1mth period then wait out the application. But purpleblood, you don't have to mention this to theVO, it will make u look like an immigration risk even though ur intentions are sensible. Just stop at going for a training to increase your employability in Nigeria 2 Likes |

You guys should hear a person out before shredding the person. Many of the comments I have read now shows that we don't read to understand a person's situation then just massacre the person. Haba! Let's re-read his post less judgmentally and see the learning points inherent in what he is looking for and who it can help later. Do we have pointers on getting a H1B visa that will enable him work in US legally directly from Nigeria? If his skills are in high demand in US, he should be encouraged to brush his skills, discuss with a few employers/sponsors to seek employment over there during his training period rather than waste away in Nigeria. If accepted, the employer will file all the necessary paperwork to relocate him without him having to 'hustle'. It's all legit I know of a dude who went for a conference in US on all these nuclear things (he studied physics in school and did masters in Nuclear one thing one thing in UK but came back after studies as per UK law) connected with employers and got offers (his skill is in high demand) Within a year an employer relocated him. Meanwhile if you study these kind of STEM courses in US, US will strive to keep you in the country by offering 3yrs work permit unlike UK whose looking to throw u out as soon as ur studies are over LadyG! I sight you peeping! 2 Likes 1 Share |

nefertitiram: Thank you so much @nefatitiram for your help. I never knew about K1 and H1B. I will definitely get cleared by the lagosNIV ASAP. I will follow the guidelines and also read up on those categories. I've actually learnt much. Thanks to you |

Re: USA Visit Visa Part 2 by MsNas(f): 8:12am On May 21, 2016 |
nefertitiram: I really applaud what you just wrote. Kudos, you took time to read and respond to his case. I've been following his story but too busy to respond. There are some points you made that I'd like to correct. 1. The US does offer 1year OPT and then a 2 year STEM-OPT extension (it used to be 17 months). That said, you don't just get the OPT, you apply for it. It's $380. The one year OPT is available for [bF-1][/b] students who either attended a two year college or 4 year college, not a M1 visa holder. The STEM OPT 2 year extension is not for everybdy, it's just for students in the STEM field and subject to strict rules and regulations. After it is approved, you have three months to find a job or you're out of status and have to leave the country. The two year STEM extension is for people who are working in their fields of education and their employers must be e-verified before they can apply for STEM-OPT. 2. H1-B is a lottery system. There is no guarantee. Going by the information he has provided, the course will last him a month or so, if so, he is not even entitled to work authorization or OPT like we all call it because from what I've heard, you get 1 month of work authorization for every 4 months studied. He is studying for just a month. 3. I like the part where you said your friend went to the US, networked, went back to Nigeria and got a company to file an H1-B petition for him. Key is "Go back to Nigeria". Right now, this year's H1-B session is over, anybody that desires such visa has to wait till next year. Can the OP afford to go to Nigeria while waiting for any employer he gets (assuming he gets one) to file his petition? Cos according to him, he is emptying his account for this trip. Bear in mind that if he stays in the US after his training in the hopes of filing for an H1 visa next year, he will have been out of status on his M1 visa and will thereby be illegal and will not be eligible for an H1B If he plans to go for his training and network and then go to Nigeria and wait for his prospective employer to file for him, that would work. But if he intends to go to the US for training and then stay back in the hopes of getting an employer to petition for him, that definetely won't work. Also, employers rarely file H1Bs for people in trades and vocations. Most H1s are taken by highly skilled workers because the employers have to prove that they can't find someone in the US to do the job they are petitioning for an H1B for. Tons of Americans have those same qualifications, an employer would not want to spend thousands of dollars on lawyer fees and H1B fees as well. Need I say that those screenshots you attached are positions for highly skilled individuals, people who probably have Bachelors, Masters and PhD in Aerospace Engineering or something. There is no way in hell Qantas is gonna pay a person with vocational training 80grand a year. Your friend who got an H1 is highly skilled. He has a bachelors in Physics and masters in Nuclear something something (lol). That said Sha, we can't rule out the luck factor and also the God factor. I wish him good luck. 7 Likes |

purpleblood:I will explain to you the negativ reactions and by that disagree with @nef at the 'its all legit'. Comment When U apply for a Bvisa, your aim is to visit simplicita. Not to work. Or seek for work. Or network for that matter. If it is legit indeed, then why would you omit to tell the VO this material information? If you tell the VO this info do u think ul get the visa? I believe not! If we tow this line of argument, then it is ok for every body that seeks greener pastures to emigrate via this route. Do you know there are organizations in the US that hire cheap labour and pay under the table? By this reasoning it is ok na to travel and seek for employment. The fact that you have a specialized course is not an exception to the rule that you shouldn't seek for work while on a Bvisa. That is why those other visas Nef mentioned exist. So you can apply IN THE LEGIT WAY. Canada Federal skilled workers, do they get to canada before they are given resident permits? Nope. Do they get a tainted record whilst doing it? Nope! What you propose to do, will make VO's wary of other genuine visitors with 'specialised courses' . You will be pouring san'sand in other folks garri and for your family members who are unfortunate enough to be tagged. Why we have difficulty getting visas everywhere is because we believe it is ok to walk the gray line. The end justifies the means. Most respectfully, I disagree! Do the right thing the right way for pete's sake and have the decency to be ashamed when people tell u the error of your ways. @seye I diddnt reply because I wanted him to shoot himself further in the feet by disclosing more personal details and his proposed plans. It won't take rocket science for @LagosNiv to flag his story and they be waiting for him 2 Likes |

MsNas: Chai... ds madam don burst my head!!! I love how you broke this all down. Am gonna start cramming them all. Lolz! He said he already a Licensed-AME, he wants to attend a 2 weeks training to brush up his skill and in the process convert his licence to a US one. He is of the opinion that if he can finish the training and become US licensed, he will be more appealing to employers home and abroad. He also mentioned he wants to come home after 1 month, then wait out the proceeds of his connections in US mayb via emails and phone calls. Even looking at the screen shot I posted, Quantas will sponsor an L-AME for H1B visa and pay a minimum of $80k, not to talk of other airlines. Just to clarify a few bits and pieces there though. But I love your post and I'm hoping you can comment based on the above clarification 3 Likes |

Re: USA Visit Visa Part 2 by nefertitiram: 1:09pm On May 21, 2016 |
LadyGuinivere: Aunty, I advised him to take the M1 route, not the visiting route. When you say do the right thing the right way, what else is expected from him? he didn't say he is remaining there beyond a month if I read clearly. 2 weeks for his training, 2 weeks for networking. He is not even saying he wants to remain there to work, according to him the training will allowing get a job in Nigeria, as well as in the US, and he doesn't know how to go about it, that is why he came here to help. US has various categories of visas, from B1 all the way to O! We may not know how all work, that doesn't mean there is no case for all of them. His case falls under M category, and it is not illegit as long as he is not overstaying his visa. 6 Likes 1 Share |
Re: USA Visit Visa Part 2 by nefertitiram: 1:20pm On May 21, 2016 |
LadyGuinivere: Well, if he decides to go and not return, he will be out of status and will ruin his chances of getting an awesome job as an L-AME in Nigeria. It is not beans to get that license, his parents must have invested a lot, and if he is out of status in the US, he would have wasted his parents resources because he can't get a job there on any other visa except a H1 or starts his education all over again to qualify for OPT. And truly ds is a visiting visa thread. Sorry for derailing the thread |
