Miscellaneous: OMG! I thought I was going to see some laboratory test report. Reason for your result as follows: 1. The workability of crushed granite fine requires more quantity of water than river sand because of the size and shape 2. Manual mixture 3. Your mix ratio 4. Is the mix properly vibrated to remove air pocket as granite dust will have more air pockets than river sand when not vibrated. 5. Type of test carried out and the mould used for the collection of sample. In actual sense, granite dust will give higher value than an all-sand concrete mix. It's only recommended where it's economically cheap like and sourcing river sand is difficult. You won't see more people using it in Lagos due to scarcity but you'll see more of it in Ondo, Ogun and some part of Ibadan. Do you know I got different result from the same mix while using marine board and timber for formwork? Reason: Water loss in timber formwork is higher than marine board formwork. agarawu23: Cheesux Christ! I just saw this post now and l am like: Exactly "what message" is he trying to pass across? Someone here said and l quote: "Old Women always get uneasy when "dry bones" are mentioned in a Proverb" !! I understand why you are "pained" .....l see your "point" even though it is completely at variance and incongruent with LOGIC. There is a place for "experience only"...... there is also a place for "sound education and experience". But everyone will agree with me that in "sane societies", you wont even have the OPPROTUNITY to show your experience, if you dont have the REQUISITE, BASIC LEVEL OF "CERTIFICATED EDUCATION". The "certificate" allows you to show that you have gone through the training/education (since the Requester/Client/Interviewer wont be there when you were undergoing the "education", AFTER which you can/will be given the opportunity to SHOWCASE your EXPERIENCE. All those examples you cited up there are just a reflection of your "Upbringing and Pedigree".... trust me, it is shambolic. Serious people. Serious institutions and Serious projects are not handed over to half-baked, ill-trained, uneducated nitwits! You can take that to the bank. I think you should refer to a Post by @Abdulwastex (some pages back) where-in he itemised succinctly, the differences (and place in the occupational pyramid), of Engineers, Technicians/Technologists and Artisans Lastpage! BTW: Mind you, l am not saying uneducated people have no-sense or contribution, l am just saying they have "limitations"... when it comes to serious construction, unless yo can show me a BRIDGE "designed and built" by your class of "un-certificated, I-go-manage-am-so" Builders. 7 Likes |

Miscellaneous: Let me point out that Laterite is NOT the same thing as sharp sand. Laterite is a soil which is rich in iron which gives it a reddish colour while sharp sand is sand which is free from dirt or soil and of angular shapes. Secondly, on point 3. To conclude on that compressive strenght, i expected that you have done the tests properly. Properly means casting a minimum of 3 standard cubes of 1000cm³ or 3,375cm³ each for granite dust and sharp sand, the average of the compressive strengths taken. Also, the proper test should have compared atleast average compressive strenght at 7days and at 28days not forgetting curing by complete submersion in water. This way alot of errors should have been eliminated. Before your experiment is considered, i have to be sure it meets minimum standard since casting just one cube is still an inconclusive result. I have seen where concrete from the same batch had a wide difference in compressive strength. Imagine having a result like 25, 27 and 14N/mm2 on 3 cubes of the same concrete batch. Thats even machine mixed o, not to talk of hand mix that gives alot of consistency errors. 2 Likes |

n3xt: I can bet, if quality sharp sand is used, that sharp sand would beat granite dust. There are two qualities of sharp sand that is unbeatable; shapes of individual sand particles and grading (sizes). In real structural use of concrete, stone (granite) dust is prohibited. Big companies such as JB, Dantata&Sawoe, Setraco etc all have their own quarry that produces this dust but choose to sell it and still buy sharp sand. |

adanny01: "Quality Sharp Sand" like River Sand. I think those guys (Construction Giants) are doing this to reduce their cost. It's cheaper for JB, Setraco and the likes to buy a dredger and start dredging sand from the whole of Lagos not minding the ecological effect on the land. I'm ready for a crushed granite fine vs quality sharp sand compressivity test challenge. In terms of cost and strength, I think granite fine will do better than sand for concrete applications.
