HIGH PRICES OF FOOD STUFFS IN THE MARKET.........A Blessing In Disguise


It is no longer news that Nigeria over the years has realised Agriculture as the bedrock to faster national development in the area of reducing unemployement and ensuring food availability.

As a result, the current government is making efforts at diversifying the economy beyond oil.....since this Government plans to drastically reduce unemployment and enhance food export through agriculture by encouraging youths to go into farming, I believe it will be of importance if the Government include in their plans some incentives that will attract the youths quickly into the business one of which is profitabilty.

I am not one of the indomie age members of this forum because I foot my bills and know the pains we all pass through with the high prices of food stuff especially, tomatoes,garri, rice etc but I must say that it is a blessing in disguise to these local farmers who against all odds still strive to feed the nation.

Now come to think of it,what Business does Musa from Jigawa state got with "mai gadi" security man work in lagos, what of kunle from Osun state selling "man power" herbal medicine in Aba and sleeping in a spoilt car in a mechanic workshop, what of ovat from cross River working as a cook in Kano for 15k monthly, chukwudi from Ebonyi state "nko" selling gala,rat poison, and costituting nuisance in computer village lagos when they have arable lands for agriculture in their comunities that can make their lives 10times better than this?

I think the problem here is that farming as a business is not profitable in Nigeria...how do you expect a young graduate to go into farming when a basket of tomatoe sells for 1500Naira, congo of garri 200, cup of local rice 20?

Many of the people who over crowd lagos today making live difficult for many have no business in the first place being in lagos, they are supposed to be in their villages enjoying better lives through farming, while you cry in the cities, those in the villages are making a good return on their farming investment at the moment and prays for the high prices to continue

Your view are cool dear, but those things you are analyse are not easy to come by

First, issue with land is a huge constraints, fertilizer, grains etc and tools. Remember the level of poverty also.

OGACLO, farming is still a risky business in this part of the world because the necessary infrastructural support isn't available. I know someone who invested millions into farming but harvested peanuts (if you'll excuse the pun). Besides, much of the content of the high price of food may be due to increased transport cost!
