News of the World was one of the biggest in the UK that was forced to close down due to phone hacking. They were sued by many for false reporting including Wayne Rooney.

Even the Daily mail you quoted as a credible site is currently in court getting sued by Drogba for false reporting. Google Daily Mail lawsuits and see how many are pending or have been successful.

Until the court decided otherwise, the articles prompting the lawsuits would have been treated as 'credible' by yourself.
