A Call For Lecturers To Rebrand Themselves And Their Style Of Lecturing by Nobody: 4:03pm On May 27, 2016
I chose to write this due to the fact that our educational system is seriously falling down, due to poor lectures delivered by some so-called lecturers. (Yes! I put the blame on the lecturers).
A lot of employers have been complaining "the students coming out of Universities especially are nothing but substandard products who cannot even deliver to save their lives". This has been a serious issue as employers are been "BEGGED" to employ fresh graduates as against their always demanding for graduates with "LOADS OF EXPERIENCE". We have been told to give this fresh graduates a chance of which giving them chance may be of risk to us as their non-delivery will bring about a TOTAL LOSS to our company (or firms as the case may be)
Like I said earlier, I wrote this because of the PAIN in me to see that lecturers REPENT in their method of lecturing. I am also writing this to CLEAR THE AIR so that employers like myself (even of bigger scale) would understand that inefficiency on the part of these fresh graduates is "MOSTLY" as a result of the faulty foundation laid by lecturers. Its so painful.
I interviewed a girl who graduated from a school in the south west with 2.1, I almost cried when she couldn't answer simple accounting questions. She couldn't even define her field of study properly to save her life (I don't want to mention her field of study or even the simple accounting questions for identity sake. I don't want to embarrass her). Another also from a northern state university couldn't even speak good English to save his life. "How have you been??" I asked, and his reply was kebbi state (Had to change the name of the state though to cover his identity but he mentioned a state close to kebbi) I laughed! Mind you, he is a first class candidate. I am not being biased but of all I interviewed recently the only person that stood out was a lady from a "polytechnic". State poly for that matter. I also finished from a polytechnic in the west (federal) before going abroad from my masters but I say this without being biased (even though she had flaws as well but she was the best so far)
I remember when I was in school, lecturers never taught you to understand, they always taught to cover. They will come 2 days to exams with bulky handouts. How do you expect students to understand their field of study with shallow-kind of lectures like this?? I remember a lecturer once encouraged us to "CRAM" He said we should give him back exactly what was in his handout. How do you expect students to be knowledgeable like this??......

Lecturers stress students unnecessarily. In fact there were even some lecturers who BRAGGED that their students would never be as good as they were, hence they never taught their students to understand. Lecturers harass male and even female students "unnecessarily" making them pay for crimes they never committed. What else would I say? Its only when you commit crimes that you suffer like this. Educational system in this country is all about SUFFERING.
I initially was angry but when I sat down to really analyse, I realised that its not their fault but the fault of the school and lecturers
1. Why come to class 2 days before exams only to come with bulky handouts and still expect your students to pass. By implication, you expect your students to indulge in malpractices. So don't blame them when they do.
2. Why give admission to students who never passed their S.S.C.E (English to be precised). I don't really want to go into details right now.
Nigerian university and polytechnic lecturers need to step up their game. Polytechnic students even have advantage over universities in their multiple I.T which exposes them to their field of study better than the university counterparts (1 year and 4 months I.T no be joke). I know how hard I had to work on my self today. Many things I learnt where never in school. I made researches just to fit in.
When I was abroad, the people i communicated with made me realize how behind we are even educationally. They had gone far and most things that stood them out amongst the crowd were things they learnt in school (I was 2nd best graduating student and that was because of my multiple readings and personal improvement and NOT because Nigerian schools made me bright. Far from it) To cap it up, they were never stressed. Not even during my masters was I even stressed (unlike my undergraduate days)
Honestly! Employers henceforth should not blame the graduates (IMO) but rather blame their lecturers. Adequate trainings too should be given to this fresh graduates as well (at least just to help our brothers maintain their jobs). As for me, I never get money train people o. Hence my complains so that something will be done FAST. A lot of youths cant secure jobs and they don't know why. This is the major "why". Youths! I will only advise you work on yourself that's all (at least be able to express yourself in good English)
Please lecturers! Rebrand Yourselves and quit being lazy unnecessarily. Help our already dying economy to grow Abeg.
Thanks

Why should you blame lecturers when the education system does not even meet up to a third world standard.

Bro,education starts from kindergateen where kids would be tutored properly but its a pity, nobody is monitoring the activities of these mushroom primary schools. Let the government focus more on the young lads, owners should meet laid down rules, monitoring teams should do their job and see if things won't change. Nothing can be done from the top. You can only experience the desired change if you start correcting from below.

We all know virtually graduates of nowadays are half-baked because only few do research out of their classwork, few use the library and few try as much as possible to know something about everything. Being brilliant means, you have at least an idea about everything and not just your course.

At the Uni/poly stage,a student should not be spoon fed with everything. Research makes a student understand better .

A conversation with a final year student

Me...Submitted your file to the secretary

Him..No

Me..Why?

Him..She said, I did not include my email.

Me..Don't you have an email.?

Him..I don't have email but I have gmail.

Me..Mute and confused.

Him..You look surprised.

Me..Yes. Your gmail is your email so,I don't get what you meant.

Him...Repeated the statement.

Me..Burst into laugh. I realised, the guy can't differientiate between email and gmail

Not a joke.

I ask you, would a lecturer teach you that? No. If a student is ready to learn,he/she would do and give all it takes.

So,my brother, I know lecturers have their faults but don't put the blame solely on them.

Lecturers encourage such. Or else what does a lecturer expect where he comes for lectures 2 days to exams only to come with bulky handouts, urging students to read. This country is an eyesore. Certain lecturers should be asked to rebrand themselves, stop exploiting the government and actually do their work (Government pays them for Christ sake) or be asked to LEAVE. angry Fine! The government may not pay them as much as they pay the Legislators (which is rather sad and I also advocate for increment in their pay as well as for teachers) but their pay is not totally bad? If they complain so much about their work they can as well LEAVE because their job is such a sensitive one (There are people with PhD looking for their jobs as well. people who are even BETTER OFF compared to them in character, academics and otherwise) Once upon a time, lecturers taught well but that was before obasanjo's monetization which upgraded civil servants' pay (inclusive of theirs) After their salaries were increased, they became soooo greedy, arrogant and selfish. They began selling handouts at very high prices just to exploit students. At a time they were cautioned only for them to still resume (my younger one is in school so I still know). So what's even the guarantee that they will actually put in their total BEST when their salaries and allowances are INCREASED?
As regards students willingness to just read and pass is SOLELY the fault of the LECTURERS. They make school boring and HELL for students hence the students wanting to just "READ AND PASS" to leave the environment ON TIME. The lecturers are at fault here. I know why I created this thread
