They know how the codes work and how it could be improved. They are not wordpress or blogger kids that call themselves bloggers because developers actually make the plugins, the themes etc that the kid bloggers keep installing.

Nope.. Web design is 99% of the time the frontend, while web development involves writing code for the backend (database, security etc), they're not interchangeable, the fact is most times web designers are also web developers... so:

Web design: HTML/CSS and maybe JS (not really necessary)

Web Development: PHP/JAVA/PYTHON/C#/.NET etc

@OP a simple Google search could have answered your question.. oh wait, we're lazy and we prefer people actually answering our questions

some even say a web designer is a frontend dude while a web developer is backend plus frontend.

To my understanding I think design is trying to make the website look beautiful and well structured while development is building everything from the scratch... My one cent

There is a huge difference between a web developer and a web designer. A web designer is concerned with the visual design of a website using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. While a web developer gives the website life by using programming language like PHP, python, android, java etc to give the site functionality.

U can liken a web designer as a bricklayer the builds the structure of a house while the developer does the finishing.

A web designer is lower in web industry while the developer goes steps further. A developer can design but a web designer can hardly develop.

So for your question start with learning the design aspect - HTML, CSS and JavaScript then graduate into learning programme languages which will ultimately make you s web developer.

The titles are interchangeable but a designer may not necessarily be a coder (coding skill) but a developer not only designs but writes backend implementable code ( Application)

Web design could be said to be editing of other design templates to your taste, it does not necessarily mean starting from the scratch by yourself but web development means starting from the scratch by yourself to develop sites. It's also used to describe the professional act of website creation

Op, just take a web designer as an Architect and a web developer and expert in Building technology.

Web design is concerned with how a website looks like and how the user/customer interracts with it. A good web designer knows how to put good content together and make a site look good/attractive.

Web development is the back-end and programming of a website and how they(the web pages) relate. Web developers are usually skilled in HTML , CSS, Javascripts, PHP etc.

Web Developement can divided into two Front End Dev and Back End Dev.

Front End Developement

long story short to be a decent front end developer must be familiar with atleast the following

HTML/CSS at the highest levels
DOM Manipulation at the highest levels
REST API Clients i.e Parsing XML but mainly Parsing JSON objects

Front end developers can further be divided into Web Designer , (User experience) UX and (User Interface) UI Designer.

Honestly a web designer falls into the lowest pecking order of the bunch because as bet your only creating html and CSS

Decent Web designers know the following

HTML/CSS
Photo manipulation i.e Photoshop or Vectors
PSD to HTML Convertion

Back end Developers
Backend developers deal with everything server side i.e PHP however backend these days are written in many different languages even javascript.

Decent back end developers must know the following

A server side language i.e PHP at the highest levels
Databases i.e MYSQL
REST Api servers and Clients.

These days people are being put in highly specialized positions instead of the generic full stack developer. Personally a good UI and UX designer is much more useful than a web designer. With them much better software is created.

Now this is just a tip theres is ALOT more when it comes to dev today theres alot involved just to keep up with the latest practices i.e git , grunt , the MEAN stack vs LAMP . They make use of programming languages like python, php, ruby, node.js framework, etc. WEB DESIGNERS just as the name, oversees the design of what is seen by users of the site, they are also called front end developers or programmers. web designers make use of tools like html, css, JavaScript, Photoshop or frameworks like WordPress, bootstrap, etc. The people that handles both front end and server side programming are called Full stack Developers.

Web designers are architects of the web. They focus on the look and feel of the website; and so, they should be visual arts experts, who are skilled in color scheming, graphic design and information flow. in simple term...

web designers are persons who concentrate on how the interface of a web or how a web looks... in other words these persons are full in charge of the graphics aspect of the web, the color and others stuff that makes the web eye catching or beautiful.

in the other hand, web developers are persons who concentrate on back bone of the web... that's those responsible for the programing aspect of the web, ensuring the web is usable or works.

HMMM i'm still learning

I think web design strictly implies just HTML CSS and some javascript (maybe lesser javascript) ,you can build static websites as a web designer. You are totally designing apps for the client side (meaning all your codes are running only inside the browser).

On the other hand web development is a wider ecosystem, here you build web applications which are much more powerful and dynamic (understatement). Let me give you examples of what web applications are: Facebook.com, Google.com, Nairaland.com and the list goes on and on. Web applications are those sort of "sites" that require sign up, login and all other cool stuffs. There are a lots of languages in the web application space: PHP(very common), Java, Python, .NET framework, Ruby, etc. Here some of your code runs on the server(usually called backend or server-side) while some run on the client (usually called the frontend or client-side).

My advice is definitely go for web development, because there you will be exposed to core programming concepts. Besides the market tends to favour web developers than web designers. A web developer "might" do what a web designer does without breaking a sweat, while the web designer can never do what a developer does.
