The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) started an exam in April 2013 to license Software Engineers to put them on the same level as other professionals. This will help to protect the word Software Engineering and the public from bad software.

Has anyone here taking this test and can share their experience with us.

Licensing will boost our career as a developer and it will give the public confidence in our work. I do support licensing and those developers without license should have their work supervised by a licensed Software Engineer.

I prefer my profile speak for me than licence, as in nigeria cert is more honoured than skills, so if u bring in lincencing, it will be another avenue for some unskilled guys to pose as programmers. I think school cert(B.Eng) is enough.. after all most of the top guys making it out there in ict are school drop out, so what are you saying?

That's right but it's still a lame reason. If you think it's valid, then licensing for other professions should as well be scraped.

Licensing has a way of setting minimum standards of knowledge so even if the person is not as skilled, there's still that slight experience and literacy in the field.

I'm about to start a training school and of course I'm never going to employ school dropouts as lecturers regardless of their skill.... too degrading

We are in Nigeria bro, dont trust cert... Am not saying that you should go about looking for drop outs, i understand you might need a graduate for some reasons, but productivity is the utmost here..

You can set a standard or a kind of programming test for those you want to employ, both IQ test, communication skills, try to interact with them to see how good they are but PRODUCTIVITY should be the utmost. Licence could only work outside the country, but fortunatly, outside the country the don't care about that...

The bottom line is this: Certificates set a standard....

There might be corruption, but do you know how the world would be like if there was nothing like certificate ?

Try this:
Setup a small school... maybe secondary school and just employ random teachers just because they passed your tests.... let's see how the products of the school would be compared to a school where standards are taken seriously
