So many things may happen to prevent some players from appearing in the final of the UCL. Example was when Scholes and Keane didn`t play the final against Bayern in 99. Fletcher also missed 2009 UCL. With the way you reason, it simply means they were not good enough to be in the final.

As a matter of fact Messi played some UCL during that season and scored for Barca. He couldn`t play in the final because he wasn`t fully recovered from a torn harmstring he suffered against Chelsea.
