The government has made an about turn on a promise by President Muhammadu Buhari that the Federal Government would reveal the identities of those who have looted the nation’s treasury and the amount and assets recovered, on Democracy Day anniversary. The government now says it would reveal the monies and assets recovered, but not the identities of those they were recovered from. Reneging on the promise, the President had earlier stated that the ministry of information would be made available by the ministry of information. But, while speaking during an interview on Channels tv, the minister of information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed said that the government would disclose the assets and funds recovered, but would keep the names of the looters under wraps. It would be recalled that at the anti-corruption summit in London, Buhari promised to give specific details on recovered loots during his democracy day address. Read also: #DemocracyDay: We’re laying foundation for growth –Buhari He said, “So far, what has come out, what has been recovered in whatever currency from each ministries, departments and individuals, I intend on the 29th to speak on this because all Nigerians are getting from the mass media because of the number of people arrested either by the EFCC, DSS. But we want to make a comprehensive report on the 29th”. However, Mohammed said the list would soon be available, but without the names. “We will get the list but not today; before the end of the week. But I must say not with the names,” he said. According to him, the development was due to “obvious legal reasons”. He however admitted, that “Yes he (Buhari) initially said so (naming looters), but he was advised against doing so for legal reasons. Of course, he has a right to reverse himself on that.” Also speaking on the issue, Senior Special Adviser to the President, on media and publicity also re-enforced the standing that the list would be made available within the week but without making public those whom they have been recovered from. Naming the loot seems to be enough for now. Afterall our societal values have changed in recent times, where looters are now being celebrated. |
Re: We’ll Name Loot, Not Looters, FG Says by dustmalik(m): 3:21pm On May 31, 2016 |
This is only commonsensical. Some of these cases are still being investigated and some of these looters are already on trial, so there is no way the presidency would mention names or specifics of ongoing cases at the courts and those that are still being investigated. |

Falana & co requested for the loot n looters. Now what is the need for the figures only? Meanwhile from which date and party? Now how will the prosecution committee start their job if not misplaced priority. You came on a rescue mission that seems like from frying pan to fire. dustmalik: What a load of crap. If the cases are still being investigated, then on what legal grounds does the government have seize property long before the suspected looters are even found guilty? If a suspect is found not guilty in a court of law, are his/her Seized assets still considered loot ? Therefore, the government should NOT be talking about loot in the first place , considering that they have ,so far, NO legitimate or court sanctioned right to seize and appropriate anyone's assets to itself. It's annoying when people like you turn logic and common sense upsidedown just to defend what you shouldn't defend in the first place. 4 Likes 1 Share |

dustmalik: Then why should they include money that is still under investigation as a recovered money if the looter is still under investigation? I think some APC returned some money so they don't want their names mentioned and to clear them of future prosecution is why names are avoided not cos of any investigation. If looter is not confirmed then the money is not recovered. Abi wetin u feel? |
Re: We’ll Name Loot, Not Looters, FG Says by ckmayoca: 5:00pm On May 31, 2016 |
This matter na common sense oh. How u go claim person thing when the person is not yet guilty of stealing it from you? In as much as it's recovered, then the looter(s) is guilty and the name should be published along what they took. It is better to get over this looters bruhaha so new stories can make headlines. 1 Like |
