That cannot be septrin reaction.Something else must have been responsible. Some people take herbs along while still taking some drugs.They try all sorts of self medication. It cannot be just septrin here.

Has nothing to do with Aba.

Sulphonamides or sulpha drugs are mostly responsible, alongside other antibiotics and infection, where cause is known. In about 40% of cases, the cause may even be unknown.

Sulphonamides remove bilirubin from the protein albumin. That is believed to cause epidermal necrolysis/cell death.

When the protective top skin cells die, they start peeling away from the lower/inner layer of skin. Pretty much like serious burnt exposes the body to infection & dehydration.

However, there is a genetic component to it since it happens because of hypersensitivity reaction of the immune system.

The doctors we have here don't even go through your medical history to know if you react to anything. They administer the drugs and wait for the reactions. If adverse, they deny you and cry that their enemies are using you to pull them down.

Let us situate this problem properly; it is not Septrin that did this to her, but a component in the drug. People will start avoiding Septrin now, while they continue taking other brands with that same component that a lot might react to. It is high time we begin to evaluate drugs on their chemical composition and not brand.

It is normal to hear people say "Beecham ampiclux is the best". This is because they think a drug is all about brand and not composition. Let our pharmacists/doctors begin to dispense drugs on the basis of their chemical content one after the other and not what it seeks to cure.

This is a fake Septrin at work, this may not even be her first time of taking it...there are a lot of fake drugs in circulation presently. I lost a very close family friend to a fake drug...something that was prescribed by a doctor. Before we could say Jack he was gone.

It's not about self medication. How many of us get prescriptions from doctors before taking paracetamol or these other pain reliefs?

God will just help this country

not really, original septrin could cause SJS; normal paracetamol can cause SJS, even if it's being prescribed by a specialist

People should stop self medicating.
Nigerian pharmaceutical associstion- PSN has a lot of work cut out for them. All antibiotics must never be sold over the counter. And so many other prescription medications. Not all chemist shops should be allowed to sell drugs without a pharmacist dispensing the drug.
People who violate this law should be charged to court, and their shops closed.
We need serious regulations put in place on drugs, and not just putting them in place but the political will to enforce these regulations is a necessity.

there is this sense of pride everyone feels if you had a medical condition and a quack tells you to take a particular drug and you reply saying " don't bother, let me go see my doctor he is well trained equipped knowledgeable and friendly" But then how many Nigerians can afford to say that. the economy is now endangered . health insurance scheme is either reserved for the high and mighty or just non functional, doctors and nurses can be so rude that their words at times can destroy another's self esteem. delay in medical attendance can bring death before one is attended to. like I have actually gone to a federal hospital and it took like 2 hours to get my card. YES THEY STILL USE CARDS FOR THE THOUSANDS OF PATIENTS IN THIS COMPUTER AGE. so don't blame me when I take the short cut. if it kills me I died for my country.

Try getting an appointment with your GP in the UK ,and you will know the true meaning of delay. If you feel your case is so bad and needs urgent attention, you need to go straight to the emergency of the federal hospital or state hospital.
The short cut you say you take is also as a result of failure of the system where anybody has access to prescription medications.
Anyways, we need more primary Health facilities to cater for our ever growing population, coming to the hospital should be by appointment, except for emergency cases who should go straight to the A&E. If your day of appointment is still far, and you feel you're getting worse show up at the A&E.
We need more primary Health centers where everyone in Naija is registered. In short, every local govt area should have one or two or three depending on the size of its population. You will be going there for regular appointments and follow up- bp checks, pap smears, blood sugar tests, breast exams etc.
Our health system needs a complete overhaul
