Naija homes use columns in the corners, but I've seen many homes outside of Naija without columns. The images I've attached appear to use just stacked blocks in the corners.

Is there a reason why all Naija homes use columns?

Boss, the flat board is structural. The board is a part of the roof structure. It combines all the rafter just like a ring lintel tights the four walls of the house together. its out of convenience that the aluminum is attached to the board nowadays for aesthetic

My Oga,

The bolded is never in doubt or questioned.

My angle would rather be whether the 2x2 can also do what the Board does, if used in a "pair" arrangement?

Except you are saying that rafters can be nailed to a board but cant be nailed to a 2x2?, ....even when both are made of wood and the 2x2 is actually THICKER and the attached Aluminium, as you RIGHTLY said, is just for aesthetics

We are all learning from this discuss, appreciate your view.

In my own humble opinion, l think most of the "seemingly over-build" we do is as a result poor strength of our moulded blocks such that they cannot carry anything more than a head-pan of sand!

I have sat on a 9" Block in one of my site before and it just collapsed under me.... and l am not someone of heavy-weight (Work-out things).
I just ask them to return all the remaining blocks back to the seller!

When you use such blocks to build a house (which is what is very common except you mould your own blocks yourself and do it to specific standard), you are better-off ensuring that the weight rests on something stronger, hence used of re-inforced columns, than on such Blocks.

Otherwise, "Lekki Gardens" might have another story to tell. undecided undecided
Though in some parts of Nigeria, they actually dont use hollow blocks but "solid blocks, which are stronger.

Also, instability of soil we build on (especially we that can build on beach soil, swamp and even on water! grin ) requires that we put in place proper column support.

Again, the type of Roofing we do over here (solid, heavy woods, iron sheet, heavy Ceiling using Asbestos, e.t.c) means we have a lot of weight on the upper part of our building..... to be carried by those "HOLLOW, half-cement Blocks" we buy from producers!
Only a re-enforced column can put one's mind at rest in such situation

Finally, we have also developed to some extent, the art of building such that the Blocks do not carry any, if any, of the dead loads of the building, using "Frame-technique" and "Lintel-Chaining".

In all, l think its a way of making the best of what we have.

This is just my opinion, l could be wrong sha. undecided

It is my opinion that the strength in standard concrete blocks in the USA, as an example, is far superior to the strength in those from Nigeria.

In Nigeria, you have to pay extra for more cement and/or stone dust, to get strong blocks.

So I used pillars in the corners to get a comfortable guarantee of strength.

YMMV.

PS: Look at this sample. It specifically states "ideal for load bearing wall".

So it sound's like if a builder paid more up front for better quality blocks, he/she could save time and money by skipping the required work to make the pillars?

I saw a video where the corners were built up using blocks, re-bar was added through each block from floor to ceiling, and slurry was poured inside. No extra time and money spent making and removing the form work for the pillars. Could this approach be used in Naija?

I think it could, if proper diligence was put into all the things you mentioned above.... though l would not be too comfortable if it were a build higher than a Bungalow.

@mdogunro....that can also work conviniently for a bungalow as lastpage said because the introduction of iron rod and concrete mix has actually made it into a pillar. Builders and engineer should look in this.
Who knows the client might end up saving some money , but that's if the client can be convinced because most of us are dogmatic about things we think are norms based on projects we see being built around us.
We don't have load bearing blocks in Nigeria, all those blocks are just to cover the spaces that needs to be covered between the pillars.

I'm in the back seat on my current build so I go along with my builder. The build would be different if I was in Nigeria and directly supervising.

What you describe is how we build retaining walls here and yes I would employ that method to build.

Another cost saving method I think about is slab foundation. I see no good reason why I couldn't have done a slab foundation on my build once a retaining wall was constructed.

I know you're trying to help and I appreciate that youre trying to save money and reduce weight but it’s actually a simple and easy solution that I need. Not a headache.

Bros to tell you the truth, I can't read all you write. Show me and convince me, dont twist my words.

Don't tell me! Show me examples!!

I'm done since yesterday. I don't need another open academic discussion on narcissit theories. It drains positive energy. As a keyboard warrior, I'll defend it with all my energy because it had no supporting evidence. It's all in the head. A typical me-think solution.

Good luck with those who are with you on this baba.

Brabus: I've already made enough savings using with board/plank fascia instead of concrete, aluminium or steel fascia.

According to Elder lastpage, the sentence means "I have used steel fascia"

You get it know baba.

I'm ready to accept your bet. It's an indigenous steel construction company from Osun or Ibadan that did the job.

Not even Lagos. grin grin

I have said it here many times. These young engineers we have in Nigeria overload and overbuild homes in Nigeria. They load buildings with so much columns, chained lintels and iron that are waste and unnecessary. I see it here everyday.

Partiality in allocation of federal government landed property by presidential implementation committee on the sale of govt houses in lagos.

Sometime in 2006,my husband(of blessed memory) obtained expression of interest form for the the 2 bedroom flat where we have lived for 23 years, after the govt advertised the sale of its properties for legal sitting tenants . thereafter,he filled the form and obtained a #10000 bank draft which is the required fee for proof of expression of interest.once he was through with the process, he proceeded to the lagos state liaison office of the committee at oyikan abayomi drive, ikoyi on September 9 of that same year along with a letter of introduction signed by his then commander, acknowledging him as the occupant of the said property;and submitted all the required documents.

About six(6) months later,on the 27th of march 2007;he took part in the FHA house verification exercise which was conducted at festac.he paid the sum of #5000 for the verification and was issued a receipt to that effect.Thereafter,he was issued an acknowledgement slip after returning the verification form attached with the dopist slip, letter of allocation, receipt of payment and deed of assignment.follwing the successful completion of the verification,it was indicated in the verification slip that his deed of sublease was being processed.

Fast forward to 2012,when the list of allotees was published,my husband's name was replaced with my neighbour's who equally is an occupant in the said 2bedroom flat.As a matter of fact;we occupy one bedroom and the sitting room while he has the other room and the kitchen,my husband was his senior in rank and number of years in service, and lastly we came into occupation of the said property in 1993 while he occupied his around 1998.

Following the realisation of this perceived injustice on the part of the committee,I was advised by concerned individuals to visit the committee's head office in abuja.Due to paucity of funds,I couldn't go immediately. It was 2 years later, in 2014 I took my son there and informed them of the anomaly. Upon getting there,we explained the discrepancy to the lady in charge, following which she searched for the file containing the list of those who expressed interest in the property. surprisingly, we found my husband's name written in ink instead of typed as is the case with other occupants in the block of 16 flats.after this discovery,i was directed to write a letter to the head of the committee detailing all these, this I did and received a stamped copy.

In june of the same year, being five months after we filed the petition, I called the lady to ask about their decision on the matter, and I was informed my husband made an error in the expression of interest form which I view as inconsequential. The only error he made while filling the form was where he wrote 2003 instead of 2006 when he filled and submitted the form.

I am aware the committee engages in shady deals in order to make extra money from the sale of these properties which number over twenty.it is on this backdrop that my neighbour sensing my husband is late, went behind to bribe the committee in order that my husbands name can be replaced with his.

As I write this,he has issued me and my 7 kids a notice to quit by end of September and I have no where to go since I'm yet to get my late husband's insurance claim.i have a shop close to where I live and that's me and my kid's only source of livelihood. As a matter of fact,of the 5 widows in my neighborhood, I am the only one experiencing this injustice,as others have been issued their offer of leasehold letters. Also, the said neighbour has a house that is near completion and has been transfered out of the state leaving his wife and 3 kids behind.I on the other hand have 7 kids and a grand child to cater for.

What do you think, seeing as my husband is entitled to this property on the basis of seniority and preoccupation;and not the flimsy excuse of the minor error he made on the form,as this is inconsequential? what is important is the fact that he expressed interest in the property when it was advertised(2006),paid the required fee as proof of his expression of interest, and the Nigeria police deducts his monthly rent from his salary from 1993 to 2011 when he passed on.

NB:
I sent a petition to the directorate for Citizen's Right, lagos state ministry of justice following which a letter was given to me to deliver to the presidential implementation committee's liaison office at ikoyi. It will be 2 weeks by Monday since I submitted the letter.I'm about to go to the office of the public defender so I can get a lawyer because I'm not satisfied with the lackadaisical attitude of the guys at the directorate for Citizen's Right.please advise me accordingly, this injustice shouldn't see the light of the day.

Thank you.

But Oga lastpage, the method you brought up wont work for sooo many reasons, with a chalkboard and some chalks i can explain. its a practical thingy that needs sketches. dunno how to do it here

You dont need a chalkboard, just tell us here WHY you think it wont work!

Sketch on paper, snap it with your phone and post it below your comment
(if you really think it needs diagrams to explain it to adults like us).

That Chalkboard matter sounds like a good excuse to "mystify everything" to small boys like us! grin grin

A lot of things that people have said "it cant work".....has later worked!
They once told us that anything heavier than paper, cannot float in the air! Today, we have Boeing 797 and Concorde Jets floating in the air. grin

Thanks.

EgunMogaji:

There's no longer anything as customer is always right.

It's the good on time paying customer, who is not a deadbeat or lying scoundrel, that is always right and is worth his weight in gold. How can people sleep comfortably at night knowing they are owning money to another man? In this same tough and rough Nigeria?

Maybe you can send Azuh after them, he's ready to run enter the market unclad in pursuit of these scoundrels grin

Many people owe. Some never pay again. That's why one has to be careful before doing a job. I also used to do delivery of materials and even start work before any payment just to put clients mind at rest. But they will owe you and won't pay.

Some will owe you for years and will pay you later when the time value of money has reduced so you're at a loss.

I'm sure all the business people here have different stories but we always keep shut

Yea I hear some of those stories through the grapevine.

A lot of people with bragado on here are opportunistic deadbeats in reality.

To Nairaland builders/contractors, if EgunMogaji owes you money or has mistreated you other than as a perfect gentleman on his site, please make una talk o grin

Its just sheer, callous wickedness!

if you dont have money for a project, just postpone it till you are ready!

Well, its all about the same arrogant attitude in the system otherwise, "a business" should be able to sue for breach of contract and claim compensation.

I asked you about the names of woods that are "hardwood and yet still light in weight", in your post in one of your builds but did not get a reply.
Could you please.
Tnx

Okay, no problem, it is inherent in your post that you made a tacit admission that using a 2x2 over a 1x12 Fascia board is "relatively cheaper", no matter how small the "savings" is....... and imposes a reduced weight, no matter how small the difference is.

My point of view has to do with "learning to improve and do things in a batter way, based on having an open mind to new methods.
Its not just a wild argument of "who is right".

I will wait for other opinions and point of view on the proposition.

Thanks for your contribution.

BTW: You mean you have used Steel fascia in the past? shocked
Hmmmm.... Dearis God O!

It's more burdensome to use 2x2 for fascia. What you gain in cost, you lose in labour charges. Besides, 2x2 are not hardwood per say. They are malleable wood and not as heavy as the hard woods. They are suspended from the tie beams using little 1foot struts so we don't need them to be heavy.
Bottom line, they warp if exposed for too long.

It's also neater using 1x12 boards and much more easier to maintain and to nail aluminium cladding on.
