The militants should also call on all the Niger-Delta leaders, past and present, to give account of the huge funds that have been flowing through the States especially since 1999. Left for me, Niger-Delta leaders are the problem of Niger-Delta, and not the federal govt. 2 Likes |

Shym3xx: Please, Please, British did all they could to develop Singapore and USA or USA and Singapore were ready to build themselves. No one can make you feel inferior, if you do not permit it. These two countries did what they need to do. You said Federal Government is not doing enough to develop ND, so should we relieve the governors of their appointments, cancel the existence of those states and declare it a federal territory?. What have the region done with all the quintillions that have sank into ND, They are complaining of pollution and yet they are polluting it the more through bombing. These regions collect allocation more than any other place, with all other allocations that other states do not get. Either Autonomous, Semi-autonomous, or non-autonomous, what have they been doing with what they've gotten all this while. You said how can they fight their leaders as if the FG took the money and pocketed it without giving them sizeable amount of it back. Do you know the quantum of projects that the FG has positioned into these areas in which this same set of buffons will rather collect the money from them than allow the project come to being? If you are not from that region, You collect a meaningful project and go to that region to execute it, if they allow you to be successful, let us know, if not, let us know. You even said every revenue, as if they do not have IGR. Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta occupies positions in 1st to 4th and yet nothing to show for it. I beg. In spite of lacuna in a political system, violence, and stupidity can never be justified. 1 Like |

free them....am Yoruba and I maintain that until Nigeria is restructured we would not move forward. If you think Lagos is developing you need a brain check...development means the people are keeping pace with the government....ordinary brand new car Nigerian professor can not afford. the current structure of Nigeria since about 1979, nothing can move....unless States and LGA's are compelled to be viable and fruitful. Subway1011: I'll never understand the thought process of a lot of these Yoruba people. Most of them prefer fighting other people's wars, while shooting themselves in the foot, when they can make progression by focusing on what they're doing wrong. All you need is critical/logical thinking. Lagos is well positioned to be the highest earner in Nigeria. So, why not focus on how you can secure and keep the cash cow to yourselves - to foster developments in other parts of the region, rather than expending unnecessary energy on inconsequential oil? You can draw a correlation between that with London vis-a-vis North Sea Oil in the UK. The Scots can scream about their North Sea oil from now till eternity, but that doesn't negate the fact that it only contributes a meagre £35 billion to the UK's economy and that's a tiny fraction of what London contributes. The economy of London alone is as big as that of Sweden. Resource-control/(semi)autonomy/regional-government/federalism or whatever you want to call it, if we can't get full autonomy should be our target - eff the oil. Lagos is being cheated and that should be the focus. 2 Likes 1 Share |

How stupid. Is "Niger delta" a state? Someone posts a picture of a shanty that is mirrored in Lagos and Abuja and the illiterates go wild. Why are the Niger delta comic book kids not going after their own who squandered 13% derivation? Bunch of jokers. The 6 years of GEJ gave shown more than anything else that the Niger delta fault is from within itself. Only thugs as leaders. 2 Likes |

it is plausible to argue that most Niger Delta indigenes and chiefs had been given opportunities that could have been explored or utilized to develop the area but instead they choose to make those investment in Lagos and Abuja. Similar to what happened in the 80s and 90s when Niger Delta chiefs had deals with oil companies and built beautiful houses in Port Harcourt GRA instead of driving development in their home communities. There is also the absence of patriotic elders and activist who are committed to the development of the area. These elders, apolitical wealthy business men, political opposition leaders, intellectuals and activists check the excesses of the abusive executive governors and political leaders. And help bring some order, balance and direction to the state and region. While this is wide spread across regions and states, some areas are quite frankly more prone to this failure. Lagos for instance had this balance until a few years. However, given the sought of federal structure practiced in Nigeria, it remains the burden of government at the center who derive the most benefit from the resources exploited from these areas to ensure commensurate development. Naturally, anyone from this area will be upset regardless of where he lives, which religion he practices, his education or ethnicity. On the other hand, Niger Delta or the former eastern region as it were should come together and present a common front. They should not expect others to fight their fight or mere empathize with them. Pity really has no benefit- it only exist for the moment. The people in this area should take some responsibility. they are just too divided and has no common sustainable objective |

Shym3xx: Fixation on semi-autonomy or oil is not the reason why their land is this way today. The reason is their leaders. Even with semi-autonomy, they will still be uselessly ravished. There is a difference between infrastructural development and diversification of the economy. Despite the fixation on oil, Nigeria generally is not meant to be the way it is. Even when we diversify, the question is still, do we have sane leaders? NO. I agree that Oil is a curse for this country as it appears to be easy money. |

The problem in the Niger delta is leadership, as much as I want resource control, the question begging to be answered is who controls the resources. The militant, the people, opportunist, or criminals? The people are first of all off the table and no development can occur without a translation of the people from poverty to prosperity. |

Bluffly: But those who built the US were Brits/Irish who became Americans and they're still the ruling class. And that was also a country built on free labour by millions of slaves. Heck, the two people leading the polls of both parties in the US right now are from the same bloodline. So ya point is? Brits also built Singapore and it was a crown colony (check the meaning of crown colony and what it means to the British royal family lool). I see you forgot to cite Hong Kong and Australia...I've got news for you, they were also built by Brits. All these countries are British oversea territories. You need to read history logically to understand - not by reading for the sake of it. Now, the rest of ya retort sound incoherent cos you're too emotional. To be able to argue logically, the first thing you need to do is to take emotions out of it - so you can open up ya brain to see the bigger picture a la 3rd eye. Regardless, I'll reply the points you raised. 1). You don't need to relieve the governors their duties to be fair to them. If you can't give them semi-autonomy - you should be able to give them special status and at least 40% of capital projects should be located in their region. That's what you call "fair" when you're dealing with a cash cow. As you're eating, the cash cow also has to eat in abundance. Failure to do that will always have consequences. 2). How come the Nigerian government and people turned a blind eye to the environment degradation that has perpetually plagued the region via oil spillages and gas flaring for decades, when the oil was flowing and there was in disruption with the cash cow? But now that they're blowing up pipelines, you lot seem to care - why? It just shows how selfish, wicked, and insensitive most of you're. So, if they prefer to keep exacerbating it, to bring the whole country down - why do you care? It's their oil and the lands belong to them - whatever they choose to do is their prerogative. If you had shown enough care when oil-spillage/gas-flaring was plaguing the whole region...you would have a point. But right now, ya opinion on pollution is inconsequential. Lastly, like Malcolm X said, "You can't separate peace from freedom because no one can be at peace unless he has his freedom." If you want peace - give them what rightfully belongs to them. Violence is wired with human psyche as part of innate survival instinct and the last resort...and that's what we're all witnessing. And no matter how you silence them, a new splinter group will always rise up...that's the story of injustice. 2 Likes |

For good 16 years, Lagos State did not collect kobo from Federal Government, and Lagos State Governors are developing Lagos State. The same 16 years, Niger Delta Governors has being collecting oil revenue from Federal Government, their people should ask them what all the Money is used for. |
