they are suppose to scrap JAMB and encourage postUTME.

I believe every university should be given the liberty to conduct it's entrance examinations.

now let's watch as cutoff marks skyrocket!

Another example of talking before thinking. PostUme was set up by a law, and can only be stopped after wide consultations between NASS and the respective tertiary institutions. This government is clueless, unintelligent and useless. ASUU strike loading.
When you don't think before you talk....No law in Nigeria established post utme...Site the section of the constitution....

Re: FG Scraps Post-ume by EMMANUEL69: 5:04pm On Jun 02, 2016
Based on what I just read, the Minister is just advising the universities. It is not a Federal Government policy. Each university has its governing council and the Minister cannot just overrule a policy that the Governing Council has approved. The title of the post is misleading. This is the Minister's opinion and he is entitled to them. However his opinion, in this case, cannot supercede that of the Senate and the Governing Council of each university.

@all, there are rules guiding admission into any institutions, there's a % of discipline to be admitted, quota system also applies to fg schools, so just having high score is not enough if your score is too low compared to others of the same discipline or same state with yours, also the jamb registrar was only citing reference of schools he knows that takes above 180, the schools are not classified as A list or C list, however, if you choose a school with high competition, then know you really need to work hard.
if a school sets its cutoff at 180, and those that choose law are about 500 with school having 200capacity, don't jump up for joy because it's not reasonable for you to expect the school to admit you if there are about 300candidates scoring 230 and above seeking admission for the same discipline.
there are other ways to weed out students without post utme, if you can't cope with rigours of academic activities, then you will be sent home, schools adopt it mostly for the revenue generation and not for academic prowess.

We are getting there little by little.

One more thing remaining: supplementary admission should be ended!

Poor smart kids will study so hard to score 260 and the university authority will put the cut off at 270. Only 10 students will be admitted on merit....at the end of the day, 200 students will be matriculated!

Where did d remaining 190 students come from? Yes, relatives of lecturers and children of rich men, who can afford to buy admission!

A recent secret survey revealed that about 97 percent of the students admitted into colleges of Medicine in Nigerian universities are either RELATED TO A LECTURER, or has a rich parent.

Good move mr Minister.
bro they just made buying admission slots Very possible with this policy.

very wrong..they will only return the system to what it was before, whereby schools will put such a very high jamb cut off mark for courses. I know how jamb was so tough for people den because of the corrupt practices involved..they should only try and improve how these exams are written..post ume is a more transparent exam than jamb. This is just to give the northern student a fighting chance..

my own take is to see the meaningless JAMB being scraped. SSCE should be made more efficient for entry as it is in other better countries of the wold...

word JAMB self dey scare person - abi who won jam for life.
Re: FG Scraps Post-ume by Lucremoy(m): 5:13pm On Jun 02, 2016
No matter what they say post utme is still very much important. Imagine a school having 60,000+ candidates with 200+ in Jamb. The average federal school can't admit more than 10,000 How then will 10.000 be picked from 60?

Interesting, but it makes little rational sense.

Ideally;

1. UTME/Post-UTME should be scrapped,

2. Each Tertiary Institution should set its own standard/entrance exams, and

3. A National body (reformed UTME) should ensure that all institutions comply with exam policies and regulations.

With this new policy from the FG, we can safely say that Nigeria is not ready for a transformed education sector. We are far from attaining a global status. No citizen of any nation would leave his country to a Cyber Cafe in Nigeria to write a common entrance examination, not even the nearby Benin Republic or Ghana.

Education is not hard, hence, the leaders should not make it difficult for the citizens. Nigerian students go to developed countries all the time with only WAEC/GCE results, they get trained, and come back as better citizens. In this age, you can sit behind your computer in Obalende, and get an admission letter from Canada, China, Cyprus, etc by simply emailing your Transcript. We don't have to travel from Lagos to Ibadan to write an entrance exam for Postgraduate studies.

Education in this new age can be likened to Tourism, let's drop the Abacus way of life.

Post-UME was never a government policy, it was the making of the Universities is their attempt at promoting '' standard'' . This has been resisted on several occasions by government over the years.
I disagree sir. It was initiated by the institutions but government gave it the official policy seal.Your position is like saying that it's a legislator who sponsored a bill is the same one who enacts the law,and not the national assembly.do you get it?

I support this policy 100%.

If the tertiary institutions want to gain control on the number of students they admit, they could request a Purpose a Statement essay and/or transcripts from the respective secondary schools, like it's done in the US.

The SS transcripts would give a more accurate measure of the academic prowess of the prospective students.

I would also advocate for the merger of JAMB and NECO. I don't see the advantage of having two separate Nigerian external exam bodies.

What oga minister said is neither here nor there. He said post-UTME is scrapped, but that tertiary institutions could still conduct extra screening exercises if they wish to.
Obviously, most institutions would still conduct screenings, cuz of the money that would be generated.
Plus am i the only one that thinks 180 is too low for a cut off mark? I mean, it's below average... later one would express shock when they see graduates that can barely construct proper sentences

wow i like this kind of news,so person no go roll for ground b4 him enter school.

watchout for some top schools increasing their cut-off marks to 250
.
This is actually bad news. Because FG should first provide around 16 new universities and create around 300k extra places before announcing such.

FG cannot force universities to admit beyond capacity.

Naturally cut off mark will just be a guide since universities admit the highest scoring students before minimum scorers.

Therefore massive bribery will come in because even a higher number of candidates with minimum 180 will now be chasing after fewer slots. Since post UMTE as screening tool is out.

The problem in this part of the world is that we cry over issues rather than providing solutions. Simple, let them make use of technology accessible to Jamb and all the institutions. This system will arrange every candidate according to their suitability. In fact, let them simply borrow an idea from the UK UCAS admission system. All these things are not miracles. AT the end the Universities will use both their WAEC and Jamb to determine their admission.
