Things You Should Not Do When Driving In The Rain by AutosBay(m): 10:53pm On Jun 04, 2016 |
Here are some Do’s and Don’ts tips to avoid an accident Avoid splashing pedestrians and cyclists. When you see the puddle, see the people, slow down or avoid – treat them as you want to be treated. If you splash a pedestrian by mistake, stop, go and offer napkin/towel, water/whatever you can give for clean up on the spot and money for dry cleaning along with apologies. Stopping – When stopping due to rain, do not stop on the road and/or under the flyovers. This will put other people in danger and will bring traffic to halt and create a traffic Jam. Whenever possible leave the road and stop. Check your wipers – Replace your wipers at least once a year. Bad condition of wipers do not clear water from the windshield very well and distort the view. Check the rubber if hard or worn out, change them ASAP. Tailgating – Do not drive too close to the vehicle in front of you. Maintain distance (3 Second Rule) and increase in when visibility is poor. Check your tires? – Check your tires, bald tires significantly reduce grip on wet roads. It increases the risk of sliding and increase the breaking distance. Use your lights – Always remember that all the drivers on the road are affected by poor visibility. Whenever visibility is poor or it rains, turn on your head light (NOT high beam) or PARKING LIGHTS (emergency lights) this is the only way to let other drivers know where you are. High beams even in normal conditions give other drivers temporary blindness that may cause an accident. Using emergency/parking flasher light (both indicators) in rain or low visibility may cause confusion as their purpose is to alert other drivers you are stopped. Use them only when you are stopped on the road and want to alert other drivers. Hazy windshield and windows – You can easily clear the foggy windows by turning on the Air Condition or Heating system. Also use defroster for backside of windshield. If you don’t have an AC and Heating system, open a window partially, otherwise stop the car at a safe place and clean the windshield with a paper napkin or clean with cotton cloth. Do it every time when visibility becomes poor. Keeping mouth shut of all passenger will help in preventing foggy windows. Remember the ground rule, if you cannot see don’t drive. Driving Through Water – Never drive through the water if you can’t see the ground through it. Your car could be swept off the road, possibly you will get no time to escape. Before entering the flooded area stop the car and check the water level ahead. If the water level is higher than bottom of the car door or 2/3 of wheels, DO NOT TRY to go through, turn around and find another route. If you don’t have an option and water is not above the bottom of car door and you feel that it is safe you can do it, proceed slowly and avoid making large waves in the water. Engage your car in first gear, release the clutch just enough to partially engage gear and give more acceleration than usual. This will help to prevent water from entering silencer (exhaust pipe). If your car is with automatic gear system, put the car in forward gear and just touch your brake, slowing the vehicle while at the same time pushing accelerator pedal. (This exercise may damage your vehicle and if you’re submerged too deeply, your engine will stall and water might enter your engine!) Brake check is important – After successfully water, test your brakes. They may not be working properly. If yes, drive very slowly and use brake lightly which at the same time will generate enough heat to dry them out. Remember the ground rule, if you cannot see don’t drive. http://saferoadfoundation.org/driving-in-the-rain/ 54 Likes 9 Shares |

Quite educative. Don't change Lane frequently....maintain a fairly constant speed...don't confuse drivers behind you Don't stop under a tree...or a high tension wire...you may not want to use your Mobile phone frequently...or not at all..if possible In these trying times, may the good Lord keep us safe. All of us. Amen. Amin. 13 Likes 2 Shares |

It is good driving ethics to use your hazzard/emergency light when driving in the rain alongside your head lamp in poor viaibility condiion. It is an alert to other road users of your presence on the road and need to be cautious. I differ with the OP saying using it in the rain gives others an impression you are stationary on the road. 10 Likes |

That part of splashing water got me interested. I stay in a big man's estate and I'm a small man. Those baskets when ever it rains splash water on me like im a piece of dirt. So one day I picked a rock and held fast to it with the intention of hurling it at a car that splashes me. So i want to ask the lawyers here.. What are my rights? If i broke somebody's glass and i argue that he stained by white by splashing water on it, whose right in the eyes of the law 2 Likes |
