OK, Let me post one extra she provides her own answers.. Five pirates have obtained 100 gold coins and have to divide up the loot. The pirates are all extremely intelligent, treacherous and selfish (especially the captain). The captain always proposes a distribution of the loot. All pirates vote on the proposal, and if half the crew or more go "Aye", the loot is divided as proposed, as no pirate would be willing to take on the captain without superior force on their side. If the captain fails to obtain support of at least half his crew (which includes himself), he faces a mutiny, and all pirates will turn against him and make him walk the plank. The pirates start over again with the next senior pirate as captain. What is the maximum number of coins the captain can keep without risking his life? naturalwaves, amicable24, EOOJ, CProf, Naikkie, RaptorX, Phlegmwash, .... |

3rdlegxxx:Okay. 3rdlegxxx:This means that for every proposal the captain makes, he needs at least 3 people to support it including himself. 3rdlegxxx:Looks like he needs to try and take the advantage from the next captain. 3rdlegxxx: The maximum part makes it a bit difficult. Since he needs at least 3 people to support his motion including himself, the minimum number of coins that must leave him is 2 i.e for the 2 other people that must support him. He needs to reduce the coin to the bearest minimum so as to reduce the chance of some people voting for themselves so, 2 of the pirates need to get 0 coins as well. Let the pirates be A B C D E respectively with the captain being A. If he takes 98, gives B 1, gives C 1 and D and E 0, B can vote himself and D and E can decide to vote for B thus endagering the captain A. If you continue the permutations, his best bet would be to take 98, give B 0coin, give C 1coin, give D 0coin and give E 1 coin. If any of C or E decides not to vote for A with this, they may lose their lives. So, they would rather vote for A to get something and also stay alive. #My opinion though This riddle took 25 minutes+ to crack. What is the answer o? |

annnikky:Can you explain this further? The 20 coins are mixed... Some could be head up while some could be tail up. When you create 2 groups being blinfolded, each group will still contain a mix of the sides.... So , how does flipping the coins on one side equate to having 2 different groups of equal heads and tails? 4 Likes |

You both did very job @ deciphering te riddle, h is the correct solution tho. The captain says he will take 98 coins, and will give one coin to the third most senior pirate and another coin to the most junior pirate. He then explains his decision in a manner like this... If there were 2 pirates, pirate 2 being the most senior, he would just vote for himself and that would be 50% of the vote, so he's obviously going to keep all the money for himself. If there were 3 pirates, pirate 3 has to convince at least one other person to join in his plan. Pirate 3 would take 99 gold coins and give 1 coin to pirate 1. Pirate 1 knows if he does not vote for pirate 3, then he gets nothing, so obviously is going to vote for this plan. If there were 4 pirates, pirate 4 would give 1 coin to pirate 2, and pirate 2 knows if he does not vote for pirate 4, then he gets nothing, so obviously is going to vote for this plan. As there are 5 pirates, pirates 1 & 3 had obviously better vote for the captain, or they face choosing nothing or risking death. 3. 1 Gold Coin The five pirates mentioned previously are joined by a sixth, then plunder a ship with only one gold coin. After venting some of their frustration by killing all on board the ship, they now need to divvy up the one coin. They are so angry, they now value in priority order: 1. Their lives 2. Getting money 3. Seeing other pirates die. So if given the choice between two outcomes, in which they get the same amount of money, they'd choose the outcome where they get to see more of the other pirates die. How can the captain save his skin? |

Re: Solve This Puzzle by annnikky(f): 7:35am On Jun 10, 2016 |
naturalwaves: You first split the coins up into two equal piles. Then the number of heads in one pile is equal to the number of tails in the other and vice versa. Then the next step is to turn every coin in one of the piles around. Then you'll have the same amount of heads/tails in each pile. |

annnikky: 1. I bliv each side will make different sounds, since they cant have d same structure.... so dats one easy way of differentiation. 2. I'd get a bar soap & press one side of d coin on it , so d structure of that side will b formed on d soap, wit dat i'll b able to differentiate each coin by just placing each of d other 19 coins on d soap to check for a perfect fit. Wit dat u'll b able to come up wit 2 groups of 10 coins. . . I blive there is still a beta ansa tho... .....still thinkin... |
