Rossikk:Name calling shows you are mediocre especially when you don't fact check properly. Whether 50s or 60s, were they not the same people of that time? It's safe to say the colonials were already handing off in the 50s. My point is, those that started off Nigeria immediately pre/post-independence had great foresight and not like today's crop of politicians. Things look bleaker now. That is not to say things won't improve with time. Back to your name-calling, this is probably where you picked your photos from and like I said earlier, it's Lagos in the 50s and 60s. http://www.travelstart.com.ng/blog/40-old-photos-that-will-show-you-how-times-have-changed-in-nigeria/ 1 Like

Boyedex:During colonial rule, the outlook was very bleak. There was malnutrition, political repression, 90% illiteracy, near-zero infrastructure, near-zero electricity, and not a single serious industry, major hospital, or university, in the country. People under colonial rule had no hope of a greater country. It was only after the British were kicked out in 1960 that real development started taking place, and Nigerians became positive about the future. |

Rossikk:Now that's a better argument. And not the "people would have said never to a development in the 50s" argument. The people of the 50s, 60s and early 70s had great foresight. That's why I singled out that portion of your post to correct in your original post. 1 Like |

Boyedex:It's no different from what I said earlier, ie that Nigerians in 1952 would have said "never in a million years" if you had shown them images of modern Lagos CBD. Do you realise that in 1952 there was not a single power plant or university in Nigeria? And the colonialists had been in power 60 years? So what hope or outlook do you think people had? |

I hope never. Spaghetti roads, flyover's, are so 70's and eyesores. It saddens me when i see governors in Nigeria, with little imagination, trying to impress their citizens with flyovers, many built too heavily and crookedly. Few infrastructure in Nigeria are worthy of preservation or set in stone, say in the way of many European cities, so we should be more futuristic in our thinking. One of the few benefits of being a third-world nation, with poor infrastructures, is that we have a clean-slate. We have the opportunity to develop, incorporating nature and exploiting the new materials and urban development ideas out there. |
