one of the advantages of true federalism is that the regional governments enter into competition in terms of development. This would quicken development in all the 36 states. The disadvantage is that unity could be lost among the 36 states making up the federation units as it gives room for cessation because power is resided in the regions. Most of the supreme powers are withdrawn from the central government and are concentrated in the regional governments making the regional governments prone to cessation.

Smart Yoruba asked for REGIONAL AUTONOMY and pay taxes to the center the first time and we still stand by it. With this we can control the influx of people, get our state taxes, out of state services for those whose last name can't be traced to any local government within the region and so on.

Federalism will no way be in favor of the Yoruba because it will tie our hands. We won't be able to get anything from other regions but have our resources stretched thin by others, with us still taking orders indirectly from the center and bound by the one Nigeria nonsense that has taken more from us than what given back.

Federalism favors regions with their people mostly outside.

Give me REGIONALISM or BREAKUP!

Wow!... This is getting interesting... What could be the reasons why many successive administrations has refuse to embrace true federalism since from all indication its the fastest and a sure route to making Nigeria great again... Are they afraid that the centre might fall and Abuja and Lagos be deserted?

Lagos will be fine - that is a state that generates a decent amount of money on its own to support its needs and can borrow on the international markets if need be.

I'd be more concerned for a place like Kano that has a huge population and dwindling industry. How will they cope without free oil money?

The advantages are enormous as eddygourdo and erusen had earlier explained.
Imagine a situation where a state can generate some amount of electricity but can't used it for the benefit of its people because it's exclusively the FG'S prerogative,is that not insanity?
Imagine where a state has a very long span kilometers of road in its axis but can't construct it cos it's the FG road and if it's tarred, the FG will refuse to refund the money expended on such. These are critical issues where only true federalism would solve.
Imagine a governor is the chief security of his state, but can't choose it's security details and can't even caution the cp of police.
Only true federalism will curb this.
My only problem is that it will breed grade A level of corruption if there is no check n balance.
But can our governors be able to able to handle such power that comes with true federalism cos most of them might end up getting power drunk and start changing the Government at centre with their new powers.. What roles does our legislators have to play to make this true federalism a reality?

Its unfortunate most people do not know that what have now in the country is actually federalism structured is such a way to favor the entire country. I can't remember all the details but I know there is an exclusive list for the Federal Govt which contains security, electricity, foreign relations e.t.c, what we should ask is that FG should remove electricity from that list so that SG can generate, supply and consume within their states. I was expecting Fashola to champion this cause but it seems bros is quiet about it since he assumed his new position. If we can push our law makers to do this, the SG will also allow LG's to do it with time.

Interesting, I see a lot of uninformed folks shouting True federalism lately. First and foremost, there is nothing like True Federalism in the real sense of it, you either have federalism or another system of government. Now,what i believe most people meant to say is Ideal federalism, though its noteworthy to asserts that federalism as systems takes into consideration the peculiarity of the people.

What I think people should clamor for is greater autonomy of the LG

Ideal federalism has worked before (pre 1967 era) and it will work again and again.
The current system has failed woefully.
It encourages laziness and corruption.

For the umpteenth time, Federalism does not support or advocate regionalism. In Federalism the center remains stronger and more powerful....regionalism cannot work in Nigeria only federalism can. Its imperative that some people understand that what we have now is FEDERALISM.

Having read all advantageous effects. I state the disadvantages:
1. States have right to form state police, Nig govt fears this will create room for state rebellion and subsequently use police for state govt personal purposes.
2. States have right to be autonomous, a room Nig govt sees as introduction to seccession.
3. States control their resources, Nig govt feels this would leave many states in the north impoverished.
4. State govt earns varied salaries, Nig govt feels some southern states will have more money and enslave others.
5. States finally have right to leave or stay as one entity in Nig. A light to achieving Biafra/ND republic, Oduduwa republic etc. Nig govt does not want that to happen..

These are disadvantages..
Its for us to check if they weigh up to, or outweight the advantages.

I think Federalism won't delegate all powers to the governors

It will be a regional system, hence there will be a regional head while d governors still exist
Hence d organogram may look like President, Regional heads, governors & LG chairmen

The country will have a currency that will be used in all regions and a common constitution, I suppose

mention the power that states do not have. you no fit. it's sad that you are the ppl we have to campaign to soon

You are wrong sir...

There are some things called "Federal Exclusive " list....

Power, Rail, Police, Ports and othrr critical infrastructure are at the exclusive prerogative of the federal government....

States has no right to undertake FG exclusive projects. This is why states hardly repair federal roads... its same reasons why all ports are owned by FG...

Delta and Akwa Ibom tried to build their own sea ports and were frustrated.

Look at your power grid... You can't generate power without federal license and the power u generate will be shared people u don't know while your state is in darkness. Delta state has 3 power plants and yet power is erratic in Asaba... If you were the governor, will u build another power plant? That is why we have epileptic power in Nigeria.

So states can't just build anything they like. Whatever they want to build, they have to ship it to lagos and haul by trucks to their respective states....

All these useless laws limits and restrict investments. That is why it is better for Nigeria to revert to regionalism... Let people build whatever they want and keep it instead of chasing federal approval and then sharing their sweat with people they dont know

What do you understand about True Federalism?

Do you think what Nigeria needs now at this critical moment of unrest both at the northern and southern axis is True fiscal federational government?

If you are against true federalism and total restructuring of the system, please can we have your reason and what are the other possible ways of cultivating an evalasting peace and oneness in this country...

Thanks as we await your intelligent inputs...

Dear thanks for raising this important matter. Our leaders both past and present know this obvious fact that true fiscal federalism is the only way we can remain a country but, greed and hunger for power to enrich themselves never let them do the needful. we are just deceiving ourselves here because, there has never been peace and unity in this country because of this feeding bottle system of government we are currently practicing. Disunity is a symptom. We just live in a denial here and keep massaging the truth. The solution to all these agitations lies in ending this feeding bottle structure that we practice which encourages neocolonialism, the amalgamation of North and South is a big fraud. There is so much injustice, inequity, subjugation, winner-takes-it-all. There can't be peace under this structure, and if there is no peace there can't be unity or progress. Everyone must be made to feel involved, protected and represented for there to be first, a sense of patriotism, then unity. In this present structure where you have too strong center, one people use the instrument of the state to oppress and marginalize others. And when they protest they get killed. And we are talking about peace and unity. Let's be sincere, where in the world would security operatives open fire on unarmed civilian doing peaceful protest? Let's stop massaging the truthThis feeding bottle system of government we are running in this nation is the cause of all these problems. We need to end this structure. I am in total support of true fiscal federalism where every zones contribute a token to the centre and take their future and pace of growth in their own hands, and express their cultures and religion freely, and practice their vocations unhindered. I strongly believed that this is the only way to end this injustice. People must agitate for self determination and for resource control when they feel marginalized and abandoned.
So, let every well meaning Nigerians begin to support the proposed fiscal federalism instead of engaging in all these tribal sentiments and insult because, it will only bring hatred and more agitations.
Everyone must be made to feel involved, protected and represented for there to be first, a sense of patriotism, then unity.
