Why Is Rails Adoption So Slow In Nigeria? by fatimahzahra(f): 11:21am On May 15, 2016
Hi all,

I use and love Ruby on Rails and most time when I talk to people, they are usually surprised when I say I use rails and the question I get is "Why Rails?"

Why not Rails? Rails is one of the easiest frameworks and Ruby is so, so easy to understand. The only framework I am more excited about than Rails has to be Meteor. I mean with rails, a newbie can actually start creating stuff within a week. I am not sure there are a lot of frameworks that this applies to.

If there's anyone who's interested in learning this awesome framework, I am more than willing to help.

Not really companies use it but it's rare personaly I don't like it , am more used to C type syntax even python don't like it, feels like a Lang for people with OCD. Barely coping with Golang syntax but ruby is just too weird a syntax.

Don’t let people fool you into believing that Ruby on Rails is easy to learn. It is not! It’s probably the best and most effective framework to develop web applications but it is hard to understand in the beginning. The worst mistake of all is to not learn Ruby before diving into Ruby on Rails. The greatest mistake of all is to not learn ruby on rails when you have the opportunity to learn!

I have a general suggestion - I am thinking that if developers take the initiative and develop cool stuffs based on other platforms and bring it to the awareness of people, it will change the mind of clients that PHP is not necessarily the best language.

I'm talking from a jobs perspective. Just go to any nigerian job site and search for programmer jobs most will require PHP alone or with other languages.

That is exactly what i have found out. That is why i always tell developers to make sure they sabi PHP if they want to survive in the Nigerian market.
PHP first, then all other languages can follow - you can thank me later.

What about C#?
Re: Why Is Rails Adoption So Slow In Nigeria? by Raypawer(m): 7:46pm On Jun 15, 2016
bla... Job do you know what is called Job? that because Most of Nigerian Programmers are just too lazy to use what is right, the few that are trying to start something are just to lazy, so they tend to use what is simplest forgetting that the disadvantages are more than the advantages. Mind you most of Nigerian University Portals are on c# asp.net, about 97% of banks uses c# asp.net for their transaction, even atm uses c# angry, Exxon Mobil Uses Java for their HardWare and JSP for their web app sad, i mean check out, etisalat, NYSC, just to mention but a few, there is no company out there that is doing something serious with Security Consciousness will ever dream of php, its just a wack, have you ever asked yourself, why did facebook stop using PHP why did google move youtube from php to phython?? why is the so called wordpress planning to move from php to javascript Dude, do favour yourself while you may, if php is the only code you can write, then you still have places to go!

I use a lot of technologies e.g.
PHP
ASP/ASPX (VB.NET)
NODE.JS
JSP
JAVA
and at least 12 others (irrelevant)

However, as far as web technologies is concerned, it is PHP/JAVA/Android that I earn my living from. The others are just for knowing sake as far as I am concerned.

But if your experience is different, fine. I am not forcing or begging anyone to learn PHP. I use many tools, anyone client request, i do.

Please you guys on this thread, dont learn PHP - leave PHP for people like me to do. The lesser the people that can use it - the more my charges will increase. But if all these dudes flood am now, wahala go start.

Before I go, I am still waiting for the Nigerian market to move towards python / NODE. I have already learnt those technologies, because I know it is a matter of time, PHP will likely get phased out very soon and migration shall be towards NOSQL things.

As for those using .NET exclusively, they have better migrate because there is trouble in that area already.

When white professionals wey don get der hands dirty in code for decades dey criticize PHP dem go mention valid reasons me no dey understand one bit... Highly advanced nd cryptic stuff .... ND they get thumbs up meaning they are right..... But Most of the developers on here bashing PHP are just doing that for the sake of it..... ND no matter how hard it gets bashed... It ain't going away soon.. Rankings carried out in recent times by tiobe index, IEEE nd Co can attest to that.... User community and support is massive.... ND majority of companies recruiting in naija demand php as a pre-requisite...... In fact the only time I've heard mention of ruby and ruby on rails in the corporate sector here in Nigeria was by Andela..... Have nothing against ruby though.... Decent language.... Rails? Decent framework.... But then, it's different strokes for different folks..... ND by the way..... Facebook still uses PHP....

PHP is KING, forget all these useless talks. The truth is that right now in Nigeria, if you cannot code in PHP, then you should just go back to your village to farm.

Php is a complete set of tools for anything relating to web development.
Gone are the days when Php will die soon. Php lives on for the next 10years.
Every database engine today supports Php.
When node first came out it seems as if its the next big, but its no where near php achievement.

Even @dhtml18 builds more tools for Php than he does for other lang.

Correct guy...java is so easy to learn after learning php because of oop and similar syntax.
You can also try c#, similar to java.
