So we can see how free market fights corruption. Not running around in a red cape sealing off premises like some deranged super hero. Rather let people vote with their feet. So that if you gouge prices or rig dispensers you will go bankrupt and those willing to work hard in providing the best prices ethically will thrive. If power and the energy sector had been properly deregulated and liberalised, we will have made far more progress.

You call this change ba?OK,how much was fuel price sold before?
For the past 16 years, there were no steady circulation of fuel, they might sell 86 naira for a week, and for months d price will go up at the price of 210 due to artificial scarcity they normally create..cos they were busy sharing the fraudlent subsidy money monthly...sometimes when they import the fuel after they must have taken the subsidy money paid by FG..they will smuggle the fuel to nearby countries where they normally sell at higher prices, meanwhile living the average citizens to suffer in penury..also making the FG to spend billions of naira to common Criminals yearly in the name of Fuel Subsidy...i will advice you to exercise patience and watch this admistration, u will later thank God for given us Buhari as our leader..thank you.

The next logical step for government is to start a tax regime on imported fuel sometime early next year and gradually ratchet it up to give an extra boost to those seeking to build refineries and those already down the line.

we might never get back to 87 naira but some few things will happen
you will be buying fuel at its real price
you will not be cheated
your government will not be duped into paying trillions to few people in the name of subsidy.

well we have started experiencing different prices, we should not forget that the government placed fuel price be 135-145, they all went for 145 per litre, to me the benefits of this deregulation is when n the
price falls below 135 per litre.

I quite agree....I love the part of not paying trillions to few people

I wish we took this decision Jan 2012, but alas, we 'the masses' we played as pawns again each other

It is not about price but productivity. Price comes last. If increased productivity, efficiencies and competition permits 87, so be it, but that is not the goal. That is an NLC type socialism argument in which they cry for higher wages not minding productivity levels then watch helplessly as inflation robs them at gun point.
It is a consistent track record of productivity that has made 2 gig data sell for N1000 today and a bag of cement relatively stable despite the terrible inflation. Where we cry is where we are not producing enough such as forex, foodstuff and fuel. So price is not the matter, making stuff is.

That will take prices up again and the current price is already hard for most Nigerians. Refineries take a long time to build. Dante's refinery is expected to come online in late 2018. That will reduce the cost depending on crude prices at the time.

Instead, create the environment for investment in petrochemicals and other industries. Speak to investors and do your best to create the legal regulatory and policy environment to support them.

Exactly. That is how to face corruption. Let the consumers face the importers or producers eyeball to eyeball without the government middleman rigging the fight in favour of one. And so that our precious forex will be preserved for critical items not consumer goods such as petrol.

I am not saying large rates, something like 1 - 5% tax and not now but when the effects of the CBN's forex policy are wearing off and not permanently but only until local production starts. You need that to wean us off imported fuel if not local refiners may find their weaning period too tough.

If the FG is serious to have taken a step to liberate the market, they should also learn to be proactive. If FG wants to play smart, they should simply sll at 60 naira, since there is no subsidy and leave the marketers to sell at whatever price they want. When everyone goes to buy only from NNPC, they will be forced to also regulate downwards their pump price.

Yes we must praise him for doing what is right because he has traded it with political capital. Consider the difference between 87 and 145 to be the interest accrued on the loan we took when Murtala and Obasanjo nationalised the oil industry and kicked out the multinational players who should be refinery operators today. We have spent 40 long years discovering the fact that government has no business in business. Surely 40 years in school must cost something.

Haba. Why are we back to this basic argument and chasing our tails. Hear this for the hundreath time: 'Government cannot control the price of anything it does not monopolise'. It is not producing enough fuel to go round thus it cannot dictate prices. It is a minority fuel producer. It is like saying that government should set the rates of tenancy on properties when it builds only 2,000 units a year. People will merely collect the houses and sublet them out at market rates. You won't see a single house to rent. It will promote corruption. Such was fuel and forex subsidy. It doesn't work.

Not only that. Some of the petrol bought lately are really toxic. It can knock one out. But once again, quality issues will come to the fore when availability is no longer a problem and with abundance comes choice. Anyone selling poor quality products will lose patronage and will disappear. May I remind us that the Airtel of today should have been the largest GSM network. Their failures have pushed them struggling for third place. The true market has no mercy and no sentiments.
