blackjack21:You have good thinking sir. I like that. I also like your last quote 'Truth is the ultimate religion' But sir, no one is saying religious people should say no religion is better than another. Some religions might consider others very barbaric which is normal based on practices.... But then, all religions claim all others are the wrong religions. That's the genesis of the problem. They consider each religion even if they have similar and Non babaric practices to be inferior and untrue. 1 Like |

GerogeI:men bro...I don't know who you are but reading ur post is like cold water to a soul in the desert. You're so matured and straight to the point. I also served in Kano too. Gwarzo road. Kano is really a wonderful place. I got a different and unknown point of view from the Muslims and north in Nigeria. Most of my best friends till today are Muslims and from the north. Regardless of what people say, I'll forever have a high sense of respect for the north. IT GRIEVES ME THAT A WONDERFUL AND EDUCATIVE THREAD HAS BEEN HIJACKED AND DIVERTED BECOS OF RELIGIOUS SENTIMENTS. OP IGNORE ALL IRRELEVANT POSTS AND QUOTES. FOCUS ON THE REAL REASON YOU OPENED THIS THREAD. George1 nice one 3 Likes |

Mr Op, trust me. You're safe. Relax. Nobody will trace you (even though you’ve given out your phone number and location here ). I'm from Kano and I am sure if you do right, you'll enjoy the place. About illiteracy, most of the kids at my ppa in Imo state where I served, didn't understand English language. It doesn't give me any reason to generalize and call all Imo indigenes illiterates. That would be a big, fat lie . Kano- like any other state, has a distinct culture. Understand it and you won't have no complaints. Cheers. 9 Likes |

mrphysics: Fun is anything that gives pleasure and makes one happy. Different things makes different people happy. so, Kano is no fun for you doesn't mean kano is no fun. A Squirrel may not have fun flying just like a bird won't find fun in a hole. 7 Likes 1 Share |

Chommieblaq: I understand very well the point you were trying to pass across. Regardless, you don't liken Kano to Onitsha in any way. They are worlds apart. That won't fly. Not Onitsha, nope. |

GerogeI: U just said it all, I live in Kano all Ma life. When I was doing Ma IT at water board , see I understand their, culture n been that am going to outside sabon gari,I will dress conservatively n cover Ma head, still it doesn't stop children from jeering, mocking n sometimes throwing stones me,n sometimes d adult won't caution them if they pass by n see them in such act, n sometimes they might be cautioned, buh I will just keep quiet n ignore them. Like I said earlier Kano is cheap fun, buh it restricted to certain area ( these areas, one dresses anyhow, booze, club n stuffs) buh in certain area too u won't find that and am sure the op us saying base on where he's staying. It's only a joker that will compare Kano to Lagos or Abuja, even jos 3 Likes |

I think the OP simply expressed the culture shock he experienced. Picture someone who comes from a society where man and woman can hold hands freely in public; And laugh out loud in a conversation or even cuddle together in a taxi while on their way to enjoy a drink of beer in an open terrace with people going about their business unfazed. Suddenly they have to sit apart in a cab and maintain a safe distance from one another. Change their wardrobes entirely Deny themselves essential parts of their everyday lives like having a cold beer while sitting out in other to conform to a system. I don't know but to say the plain truth that will be very distressing. 13 Likes 1 Share |

I'm just watching everybody on this thread ranging from the Op to the uninformed and illinformed. Let me clear the air à little. There are atoms of truth in everything the Op has said eventhough he overblew somethings out of proportion. Starting with the 5 houses one mosque, there's no lie in that except you don't really understand what he means by a mosque. Almost every house (especially those of the rich) has a mosque or a praying ground as many would rather put it. On the issue of smoking, Mr Op you got that wrong. I don't think there's any state in the country today that has the high rate of smokers like Kano. But that can still be contested but truly the rate of public smoking has reduced drastically. On intolerance, technically speaking it exists but mostly with the touts and those without control. I'll rather not use the word illiterates cos some literate ones still behave same. On stoning females cos of their dressing, yes it does exist but not everywhere and it's mostly from the almajiris. One thing u should know is that the Hausa man is always prompted to reacting violently to things that conttavenes his religious beliefs so when he sees these ladies with SOME sensitive parts of their body exposed (ask any Muslim what I mean by sensitive) the only way they tend to react to the arousement you've caused them is to act violently using religious reasons as excuse. But I must stress that this isn't so in all places in the state. But Kano people no dey use religion matter play o! An enlightened person may play it down but a tout or yandaba will always go extreme. On d Islamiya issue, yes they attend that but it usually doesn't interfere with their Western education except if it's evening classes you take. But on the part of students telling you it's time for prayers during lectures, yes that's true. They do that very well. But u don't finish Islamiya before attending primary school, it's not so. On the part of flexing or social life, it depends on how far you want to go cos there are places for different kind of flexing in Kano, sabongari just happens to be the headquarters. Finally, for now sha, on the part of females not wanting to establish body contact with you in a keke, that's true but one thing is they won't even board same keke with you in the first place. But guy, those who say to kpansh Hausa babes is impossible, believe me they haven't tried or they lack what those girls want. I'm speaking from experience but as a Christian to marry a HAUSA Muslim girl? That's a big NO. I'm not supporting any party here, I'm just here to make common sense and clear the air. I'll stop here for now. Op continue but after you give me my two cents. 13 Likes 4 Shares |
