10. The Bentalha massacre. After the Rais massacre, (number 9 below), rumours spread that more massacres were coming soon. For ten days before the event, howling as of jackals (which are not found in the area) was heard every night, and helicopters circled overhead daily. On September 22, at 11:30 pm, explosions rocked the Hai el-Djilali neighborhood in Bentalha and attackers began pouring in. They began methodically going from house to house and slaughtering every man, woman, and child they found within. Screams and alarms filled the air as a helicopter circled overhead. The attackers were armed with machine guns, hunting rifles, and machetes; some, were dressed in dark combats, some in the Islamists' trademark kachabia, with balaclavas and beards. They recognized some of the locals, calling them by name. They proceeded, dashing babies into walls, cutting off limbs, cutting throats, raping and then killing women. The killers continued proceeding through Hai el-Djilali from house to house until about 5 am, when they departed unmolested. 9. The Rais Massacre The Rais massacre , of August 29, 1997, was one of Algeria 's bloodiest massacres of the 1990s. It took place at the village of Rais. In 1997, Algeria was at the peak of a brutal civil conflict that had begun after the military's cancellation of 1992 elections set to be won by the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS). The poor farming village of Rais had mostly voted for FIS and had a history of supporting Islamist guerrillas in the region, but had recently stopped providing them with food and money. The hooded attackers arrived about 1 am in trucks and cars, armed with shotguns, knives, axes, and bombs. They continued killing the village's men, women, children, and even animals until dawn (about 6 am), cutting throats and taking the time to burn corpses; young women, however, were abducted instead of being killed. In some cases, they left severed heads on doorsteps. They mutilated and stole from the dead, and committed atrocities against pregnant women. They burned and bombed some houses. The villagers tried to flee or hide. Army units stayed outside the village, shooting at fleeing villagers, but not attempting to enter the village until after the attackers, carrying away some 20 young women, left at dawn. Responsibility was claimed for this by the Armed Islamic Group (GIA) same perpetrators of the Bentalha massacre 1000 before the conflict began to 200 after the massacre; many of the remainder left following this massacre. Some of those who remained were given arms by the government for future self-defense,

6. Massacre of Trujillo The Massacre of Trujillo was a series of murders perpetrated between 1988 and 1994 in the town of Trujillo Colombia by paramilitaries and the Cali Cartel with the involvement of active members of the Colombian military and police. Some 245 to 342 people, including unionists and suspected guerrilla supporters, were tortured and dismembered. Among the more gruesome murders was the decapitation and castration of Father Tiberio Fernandez, the local Jesuit priest. The murders were seen as a warning to other pro-guerrilla elements. 5. Cinema Rex Fire, Iran On August 19, '78 Hundreds of people were watching The Deers, when four men barred the doors of the cinema and doused it with gasoline from a can. The attackers dropped a match, blocked the doors from the outside and fled. 4. May 2013 Iraq attacks. From 15 to 21 May 2013, a series of deadly bombings and shootings struck the central and northern parts of Iraq, with a few incidents occurring in towns in the south and far west as well. The attacks killed at least 449 people and left 732 others injured in one of the deadliest outbreaks of violence in years. Mosques were the major target, and new tactics like double bombings started to be used, whereby a bomb detonates and moments later, another goes off. One eyewitness said, "I was about 30 meters from the first explosion. When the first exploded, I ran to help them, and the second one went off. I saw bodies flying and I had shrapnel in my neck." Strategic bombings were employed with bombs going off just minutes after morning prayers, On May 20 at least 133 people were killed. |

3. 2007 Yazidi communities bombings For several months leading up the attack, tensions had been building up in the area, particularly between Yazidis and Sunni Muslims (Muslims including Arabs and Kurds). Some Yazidis living in the area received threatening letters calling them "infidels". Leaflets were also distributed denouncing Yazidis as "anti-Islamic" and warning them that an attack was imminent. The attack might be connected to an incident wherein Du’a Khalil Aswad, a 17-year-old Yazidi girl, was stoned to death. Aswad was believed to have wanted to convert in order to marry a Sunni . Two weeks later, after a video of the stoning appeared on the Internet, Sunni gunmen stopped minibuses filled with Yazidis; 23 Yazidi men were forced from a bus and shot dead. The blasts targeted the Yazidi , a religious minority in Iraq. The coordinated bombings involved a fuel tanker and three cars. An Iraqi interior ministry spokesman said that two tons of explosives were used in the blasts, which crumbled buildings, trapping entire families beneath mud bricks and other wreckage as entire neighborhoods were flattened. Rescuers dug underneath the destroyed buildings by hand to search for remaining survivors. 500 people were estimated dead. |

2.1990 massacre of Sri Lankan Police officers The Sri Lanka massacre was a mass murder that could have been prevented by the government. It all ensued due to the Indian Peace Keeping Force's arrival in the country in July '87, January of the next year, they elected a new President, Ranasinghe Premadasa whose main aim was to work out a peace plan with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam who were engaged in a bloody separatist campaign for a division of the North and Southern province. The IPKF's presence in the country caused tension and adverse public opinions, so the President asked them to leave. But before this, he entered into a ceasefire agreement with the LTTE. In an attempt to win over its leadership, Premadasa transferred a large quantity of weapons to the organization (at their request), to fight against the IPKF. But the IPKF left. The country's Minister of Foreign Affairs was in talks with the LTTE, but conditions worsened when there was no agreement on critical issues like the dissolution of the Northeast Provincial Council and repealing of the Sixth Amendment to the constitution. LTTE chief political strategist and chief negotiator threatened the government "this is the last chance we give you. If you fail, we are prepared to wage war". more tension surfaced when the government asked them to drop their arms and hostilities began. Few days to the massacre,a vehicle carrying Army personnel from Vavuniya to Mullaitivu was fired at by the LTTE. One soldier died and 9 injured. But Defense Ministry instructed to take no action. The main cause of the carnage occurred when Batticaloa police locked up a Muslim youth, allegedly found in a compromising position with a Sinhala woman, by her husband. Police was not aware of that this youth was a tailor working for the LTTE. LTTE abducted unarmed 899 police officers by surrounding stations and asking them to drop their weapons, about 125 were able to escape. ASP Ivan Boteju - who was the OIC of Kalmunai police station - refused to surrender and kept on fighting with the LTTE from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. He protested insisting that they "would be tortured if not killed [if they surrendered]". Within that period, he continuously requested for air support and artillery support but was denied. At about 5:20 p.m. the IGP personally contacted Botheju, ordered to stop fire and surrender. When they had laid down their arms, LTTE took over and all communications with the Colombo Police headquarters were lost. All of them were taken to the Tirukovil jungles by the LTTE, blindfolded, tied their hands behind, made to lie down on the ground and shot. The death toll falls between 600-774 police officers. Although the President condemned the attacks and stated, "From now on, it is all out war and no half ways", the deed had been done. This was the start of the Eelam War II. 1 Like |

1. The September 11 attacks The September 11 attacks also called 9/11 is a sequence of organised terrorist attacks against the World Trade Centre and The Pentagon by Islamic Extremists, al-Qaeda. The attack was carried out aerially by 19 terror members hijacking 4 Passenger airliners and crashing it into the North Tower of the WTC, the South Tower and the Pentagon. The fourth aircraft was intended to be crashed into The Capitol but failed when passengers wrestled to regain control. The Passengers on hearing reports via their phones that two planes had been crashed into the WTC tried to take control but on suspecting their ambition the hijackers intentionally crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. The death toll is two times that of the Sri Lanka's above and Fatalities include: 2606 at the WTC, 343 Firefighters, 265 passengers on the four planes, 125 at The Pentagon, 72 law enforcement officers 55 military personnel, And the 19 terrorists, totalling 2606. Over 6000 people were injured. After the attack people where stuck above the point of impact cause the explosion and severely damaged all three stairways and elevators, so they were for off from escape and were seriously inhaling smoke. Due to this over 200 people jumped out of the windows of the 110-storey building. Immediately after the attacks, the FBI requested evidence to be able to arrest Saddam Hussein, but days letter they had enough evidence linking Al-Qaeda to the attacks. Osama Bin Laden publicly denied responsibility but in 2014 he embraced it Stating that the U.S. support of Israel , the presence of U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia , and sanctions against Iraq as motives now ascertaining his name in the FBI Most wanted List. Bin Laden was killed by the US military in May 2011, 7 years after admission. Picture 1: A collage showing sequence of the attack Picture 2: A man and woman covered in rubbles.
