Empero1:
The truth of the matter is that someone like this Amachi is fighting what was not existing. According to her they are fighting for "The state in which rights and opportunities are not affected by gender." Since when did altruistic men and sane society started denying women their rights and opportunities?

Well, it's obvious she and her ilks are fighting for right and opportunity to dominate men: like wishing to be the first among equals when in a romantic/marriage relationship - and access to unmerited favors: like giving them political appointments which they didn't fight for. ... something like power is fought for and never given to.

The last time I checked, no altruistic and sane Nigerian man (at least in this present age, except for some religious sects who are to be blamed) ever denies his female child an access to education, cajole a female child to marry whom she doesn't like, prevents from attaining political heights of her choice etc.

I remain an egalitarian. However, in romantic /marriage relationship a man should naturally assumes a first among equals role, but without subjecting his partner to slavery.

In the other hand, in any other realm, either of the gender who's better informed and prepared should be allowed to assume a first among equals position, yet without subjecting the other /others to any form of slavery.
God bless you!

Marriage
No law in Nigeria forces a woman to marry or remain with any man. A woman has a CHOICE and most times decides who she marries by her own free will. And she decides to stay or leave as she pleases. If a woman marries an slowpoke, it is because of her poor judgement - it has nothing to do with gender equality. There are several women who married wonderful men or who even chose not to marry. Look at how she dissed the Olori for her 2 failed marriages but refused to diss Freeze for his own failed marriage and she claims to be advocating for gender equality.

FlirtyKaren:
Lailan Mary Amara Jacob is vexed over the recent trending statements Ooni of Ife's wife, Olori Wuraola and OAP Freeze made concerning gender equality.

You recall Olori Wuraola had said she's not a huge fan of gender equality. While speaking at the Emerging Women's Forum in National Harbor, Maryland, she had said:

“I am not a huge fan of Gender equality. We can’t be equal, We can’t be men. We have our roles to play here, a very pivotal one. How about if we think about it this way that we are limiting our potentials and where we could get to as women by us keep saying that we want to be equal. I don't think we can ever be equal''.

OAP Freeze later backed Olori up saying:

The Olori of Ife, Her Majesty, Queen Wuraola-Zynab Ogunwusi, spoke what I consider words of absolute wisdom, when she stated her belief that gender equality is hardly achievable in the modern world.
I agree that men and women have equal rights I absolutely disagree that they are equal. If you are in doubt, attempt wearing your boxers on your head and your cap on your butt and then brush your teeth with your belt and hold your trousers together with your toothbrush, then perhaps, my point will be better illustrated.

Well, dear Olori, OAP Freeze, Amara has some strong words for you this morning. Kindly read:

When educated men and women display high level of ignorance, one is forced to speak. Before one makes a public speech, I think it is wise to do some research. It is always safer to get the facts right, before picking up a microphone to show off. Gender equality does not mean competing with ones husband. Neither does it mean rivalry between the man and the woman. Gender equality is not all about marriage. It goes beyond that. Let me educate you both, since you failed to do your home work.

What is gender equality?

In simple terms gender equality means the state in which access to rights or opportunities is unaffected by gender. This means that boys and girls, men and women should get equal opportunities in every area of life. I will give you few examples.

Education
Everyone should get an equal opportunity to go to school. The girl-child should not be denied access to education because she is a girl. Are you not aware that in some cultures/religion women are not allowed to go to school?
Work
Men and women should get equal employment opportunity. Look at our work force today, it is dominated by the men. Do u know why there are more poor women than men today? It is because women don't get same opportunity as the men.

Politics
There should be equal representation. How many women get political appointments? How many are elected into public offices? How many women are governors? How many women are in the state and National Assemblies? Can men truly represent the interest of women?

Culture

We have obnoxious cultural practices that relegate women to background. Little girls are forced into marriages against wishes. Of course you know what widows go through in this part of the world. Is it fair
on our mothers? Is it fair that men who are physically stronger should molest women they are meant to protect? And you proudly say you are not a fan of gender equality? What ignorance!

Marriage

Women should be given same treatment as men. A woman should be allowed to have a say in her matrimonial home. She is not a slave. The man and woman are like two sides of a coin. They need each other. We have our different roles to play. If you have been pregnant before, then you will know what it means to carry a child for nine months in your womb, go through labour pains, then nurse the child to maturity. Most women are never appreciated by their men, what they get is abuse, abuse and abuse even when they are heavily pregnant. If I may ask, why did you leave your first marriage? And your second marriage? Why did you walk away and walked into a third one? Does it have anything to do with being treated like a slave? Does it have anything to do with
frequent abuse? Or did you just walk away without a reason? How can you convince me that you don't believe in gender equality when you already have two failed marriages? Why didn't you remain a slave in those marriages?

As for Freeze, my humble suggestion is that your university degree be investigated. It is shame that after passing through the four walls of the university and working in a media house for decades, you still don't know the meaning of gender equality. What are shame! Besides, you seem to be a man without principles. You are neither here no there. Speaking from both sides of your mouth at all the time in your desperate search for cheap popularity. Today you are here and the next moment you are on another side. Stay off social media in your own interest!
For all those who truly do not understand what gender equality means, here is your chance. It has been explained in plain simple English.

I am highly disappointed that this write up is coming from a lady.
One of the reasons why people usually say we women are our own enemies.
You just come here and post things like Life is that easy.
Do you know that in most families, whenever there is a choice to be made on who deserves education whether because of shortage of funds or any other reason, the lady gets affected the most.
You also come here to say that women marry out of their freewill....will you say the same thing to the 13 year old girl that is married off to a man old enough to be her grandfather?
And for you to say that a man has the right to abuse his wife just because she made a mistake by marrying him is just purely wicked.
And Nigerian feminists (and I mean real feminists) are not against hardwork.
So pls consider all variables before posting

The "marriage" example is the reason why gender equality is not going to work in reality, ask me why.....the answer is the "hypocrisy" going on...the same lady that want equality in the marriage will suddenly lower her voice when it comes to issue of finance in the marriage...you start hearing "but you are the man of the house na.." Is that not hypocritical hypocrisy??when it turns to issue of money you suddenly remember he is the man..when you guys go on date you expect him to pay the bills most of the time because subconsciously you feel he is the man......in some house some of we women are even trying by contributing 40% money to the marriage, ask her to switch roles and start paying 50% while her husband pays 50%you will hear "is he not the father of the house"she will start screaming why should she pay the same with him..are you not the one that wants equality??or you think equality should be done only when it favours you??....I have said this before and I will repeat it again.."Gender equality is not our issue, the major issue is Lack of RESPECT for each other whether man or woman...if your man respects you he will not treat you less because you are a woman,he will not look down on you because you are a woman...the same way your boss will not treat you badly because you are a woman.....by the way during the PDP presidential primaries that brought GEJ in,there was a woman among those contesting, guess what?she did not get up to five votes despite having a lot of women in the party...the women were voting for the men there because there is no trust even among each other..even some women don't love and respect each other...Change should begin with us..
You must be living in my mind, you took this straight out of it!

Barman! Give this lady a drink.

My point exactly. I have benefited a lot as a woman and I have no single regret being a Nigerian woman.

By the way nobody is talking about some male children on the streets of Lagos and Akwa Ibom states sleeping on the street at night and cleaning car windscreens in the daytime. These helpless kids are tagged as wizards by their deceased fathers' relatives so that they will claim their late fathers' properties.

What about the alamjiri kids in the North made up of both gender?

Talk of emancipation of mankind and not gender equality bullshit because both males and females are affected by the wickedness of the people of this world.

didn't expect u not to feel affected. U said if there is shortage of fund, female is affected, am so disappointed in ur level of education. If a lady is affected, it means. The lady is not brilliant, and u can xpect the family to be wasting money on her. But if she's a brilliant girl, and d boy is dull, no right thinking father will stop the female child cos she's female. The boy will surely stop and the girl will go to school. In this age of social media frenzy and everyone seemingly suffering from ADHD, name and title can make or break anything. Such is the so called equality bill before the national assembly. My understanding is the bill strives to give equal rights to women as currently enjoyed by the men. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, and far as I know, we are all born of woman and love and respect our mothers and sisters, daughters, aunts and friends for the most part. But in a patriarchal society such as ours, albeit it secular in name only, and highly religious, there is and will always be an equivocation of “Legal Equality” to “Natural Equality” on the sides of those currently biting more than their share of the equality apples (misogynists!), as well as those that would want to turn “societal norms” on its head (Misandries!). Unless that bill comes with a set of "balls" and a "shaft", then it definitely doesn't infer "natural equality"

Since we all want the same thing as citizens of this country, here I propose a simple solution to the problem: “A Rights’ Bill” not women’s right, men’s right, or equality bill but a “Rights’ Bill”, to reaffirm the rights of the citizens and legal residents of the country! In this bill a citizen/resident shall be defined as a person (man/woman) of suffrage age. Here’s a few suggestions…feel free to add yours!

• I know we all agree that equal work should mean equal pay.
• A child is the product of both a man and a woman, and since no third party is involved in this process, “legally” this means a shared ownership.
• There’s already the one “man” one vote provision.
• If arrested by the any federal or state security agency, you shall be presented before a competent court of law within 48 hours or be set free.
• A man is the head of his house according to the prevailing religions of the country but not according to the constitution! If you fail to administer your household and the state has to step in, then every citizen shall be treated as equal before the law.

I cannot possibly capture all of what is needed to set the rules of engagement between the people of the country and most importantly how we relate to the government institution. I believe that simple cosmetic change in name and rephrasing of the key elements of this bill could change the debate entirely to focus on our common aspirations and not a battle between the sexes as it is currently.
And one last thing, this version of the bill can also be passed at the state level while we wait for it to be ironed out at the federal level—looking at you Mr. Ambode!

Let me know what you think nairalanders!

If this bill is finally pass into law women will suffer it the most, Cos me as a man will not pay dowry on a lady since we have equal right she should also pay my dowry. We share all the finances in our house everything and mind you some ladies will not get married i swear.

Reading all these views, I weep for this generation of men and I pity this generation of women. Someone actually said "stupid stupid women". Why the hate and contempt. This is an opportunity to educate yourselves. Most of y'all have never read what the bill is about. You don't know. But your masculine pride is affronted when you hear "equ.. ." and you start braying all over the place. Who is struggling headship with you? That is NOT what the bill is about. That widow who gets thrown out of the house she laboured alongside her late husband to build could very well be your mother. That 15 year old girl forced into marriage could be someone you know. Would you be happy if your sister earns less than a male colleague with the same or less qualifications and experience than she has? And what is this talk about paying bills? Most of you are not married because if you were or if you're truthful, you'll know that in a HUGE HUGE number of Nigerian marriages bills are shared. Sometimes 50/50. Some wives provide 100% because the husbands have lost their jobs. Even the rights some woman may take for granted are denied a whole lot of other women in other parts of Nigeria. Who will speak for them? Please read the bill and understand it. No one is trying to usurp your positions in the home and in the society.
Olori Wura? Is she not the same woman people on this same board and all over social media were calling olosho, gold digger etc. She's suddenly an authority? Wow

Seriously speaking, women like this are the reason why so many women are having problem in their marriages. The interpretation of what she has said is different in this part of the World. Probably another name should be proposed to encourage more respect for the women.

The way she had spoken, insulting a man like this shows why genda equality may not work. You have disrespected this man all in the name of equality. I expect you to lead by example but instead you chose to toll the same path.

Anyway, until we find the correct title, equality will continue to cause serious problem in our homes. A word is enough for the wise!

Hilary Clinton, Christen Lagarde and the likes got to their positions because they worked hard and deserved it. It wasn't because they were just women. People will take anybody serious when you truly have something to offer - if you have nothing to offer, you can't expect to be given much authority simply because you are a woman.

And if a woman decides to remain in an abusive marriage - it is also her choice and has nothing to do with gender equality. There is a law in Lagos state against gender violence.

Most times these women marry for nothing more than money. They don't even care the guy's source of money or whether he can sustain a decent lifestyle. Once he has a little money to spend on them, they just open their legs and let the man have his way. Whose fault is that biko?

As for the writer insulting Freeze, I think the writer's degree ought to be investigated.

I think your response deserves to be on front-page and also go viral. Kudos!

Man and woman are not equal and will never be. The idea behind feminism is to attack the institutions of marriage and family, promote lesbianism, encourage women to leave their husbands and neglect their children, destroy capitalism e.t.c Inequality is why a woman has to bear the burden of child birth for about 9 months for an act performed by both a man and a woman, and the man gets to still be himself. I can give more examples.

What women need is equal rights and oppourtunities. And that is equity and fairness, not equality.

God bless you. you are lady for that matter. Lord give me this type of Angel (Amen).

Wow
please oh, name jobs who women and men do same function yet the men are paid more to do the same thing. Name them , whether in civil service which is the largest employer of labour or private. Where do you people jump out from with ur biased sentiments. All cases you have raised above are factors no law can change because the majority of those who practise it are bound first and foremost by sharia law which accepts such. In the general parlance are there no men who suffer from all those factors the women u fighting for a suffering ? Infact the prejudice against men is so much today that women are more advantaged in job placement, promotions, scholarships, grants etc than men. Who is fighting for the men. Why are you this sexist

TooNoisy:
I can see lots of attention seekers everywhere. They scream women are being discriminated against but produce not facts but heresay. So let's examine the pure facts:

Education
The writer says women are being discriminated against in education. She forgot to tell us which Nigerian culture does not allow girls go to school. She just mentioned "cultures". Truth is that there is the Universal Basic Education program that ensures ALL Nigerian Children are educated to a certain level - JSS 3. This program does not discriminate against girls in any way. It caters for both boys and girls. The writer also forgets that Jamb cut of marks are not Gender based. If women were being discriminated against, then their own scores will have to be higher. Besides, I hear for common entrance, the cut-off marks are actually lower for girls than boys. So can someone explain what the discrimination is about. Unilag actually has about the same number of female and male students at the moment.

Politics
No law in Nigeria stops anyone from holding political office. The only barrier could be age but certainly not gender. How many women even contest for electoral offices? How can you vote for a women if there are no female contestants? KOWA Party had a female presidential flag bearer, how many women voted for her? Did the writer vote for KOWA? If she didn't then she should just shut up.

The problem with Nigerian feminists is that they do not believe they have to work hard for anything. They think they should get these positions just because they are women. Women should go and sit down jare. We have better issues at hand not dis gender matter.....can gender equality reduce d price of tomatoes? Can it make fuel sell at N87? (Quote author=FlirtyKaren post=46713236]Lailan Mary Amara Jacob is vexed over the recent trending statements Ooni of Ife's wife, Olori Wuraola and OAP Freeze made concerning gender equality.

These pseudo - activists will achieve better results if they focus on changing the cultural narrative sorrounding widowhood practices, inheritance laws and forced/early marriage. They can do this through education & advocacy, but i guess they're not interested in genuine issues that plaque women in this country. To any woman reading this, you have the same rights as a man in this country. If you fail to make use of your opportunities, blame yourself not society!.

Equality according to the basher of the Queen and Freeze is equal opportunities for both genders abi? In today's Nigeria women are given a good level of equality, you see women in all courses of study in the universities Engineering, Medicine, Architecture & Design even the NDA admits girls. All though there are still some cultural practices against women, but many a fading away fast. Women in politics? When a woman Sarah Jibrin contest presidential primaries in a political party in Nigeria she got how many votes? One I think, where there not more than one woman among the delegates? Women are gradually coming forward in some aspects of society. Even the great USA is just about to have its first female president, after over two hundred years of existence, with time more women would be educated and most of the negative cultural practices would no longer hold. Finally sha, women and men are never, and would never be equal, na so God want am, unless you gets sense pass God,with no fit happen.*drops mic* cool

You talk about education but it seems you lack it yourself, all responses here are based on what the Op posted, Is there any mention of a bill in the topic? We've not seen the details of the bills so we can't discuss it, she gave examples of how women are being marginalized and that's what people are responding to.

AyeeIdris:

But bride price was created by men. After all in Nigerian culture, the man owns the children. Fathers apparently saw their daughters as some form of property and put a figure on their head. Its a practice that is still done today in the name of ' culture'. Bride price is what makes some unfortunate soul think they have acquired a slave (when the money can never pay for a quarter of what the parents have spent on her.
I

My dear this is not about marriage or bride price persay. There have been cases of women paying their own bride price thru their husbands who are not strong financially. Respect is the key here. All you need do is know your role in the marriage and you are in. On the issue of bride price being man's creation. I think it is both cultural and biblical. Recall Abraham sent his servant with the bride price to get a wife for Isaac. You can also ague that getting married in church or court or wherever should be abolished. Pple should just cohabit and start making babies.

Having said that, I will like to say that the who gender equality thing is not only misunderstood but also misapplied by many. I doubt if there is anywhere in the world today where women are paid less compared to their male counterparts on same job. Neither is there a place where women are shut out politically. Here in Nigeria, Gbemi saraki contested with her brother Bukolafor the govship of kwara. In Taraba state just recently a woman almost clinched it. Clinton slugged it out with Obama but lost to a superior Obama. Now she is bulldozing her way thru all the male aspirants yet she is a woman. I also do not think a Tiwa savage will be paid less than a Psqure on same Glo endorsement deal just because she is a woman.
I Realy don't understand where u guys are coming from. If you think there will be a law that will send your girl child to school and also pay her school fees, then keep on dreaming. Many parents today give their girl child same opportunity as the boy child. The argument Wether feminism or feminazi does not add up. Except you are saying the Obaship of Benin kingdom should be xtended to women.
For me, the women are their own undoing. Always putting up a fight where there's non. Today we have female legislators across board, permanent secs, DGs, ministers, commissioners and so on, yet the say they are marginalised. The US should have handed the presidency over to Clinton just like that on the mere excuse she is a woman.
For those illiterate/religious bigoted parents who feel their girl child should get married instead of going to sch, they need education and not law.
