@mpvGoddess.. How long did you wait for cgfns to receive your credentials? I sent mine on the 12th of may but they are yet to receive them.. Does it normally take this long?

I am just wondering.....can it not be tracked? That way, you know it's been delivered and you can even see the name of the person that picked it up

Package sent by FEDEX from council arrived 4 days later all in April 2016.

Package sent by UPS from school arrived 4 days later all in April 2016.

Issues were raised with council's verification response by CGFNS on May 11.

Council says they are yet to receive the same and so cannot treat the query.

Between a month and 15 days to two months you should know where you stand.

And you will know because they will email you and update your account with them.

Don't waste money calling them ooo...they are pretty organized and will revert to you themselves ASAP if they have gotten it

Did the school use a courier with a tracking no? Or did the council use a courier with a tracking no?

Did they pass that detail to you? Then yes, if not then no!

Gratefulme40 has spoken well.

I paid official fees and fees for express service. I didn't stop there. I specifically demanded that courier delivery be used and I demanded the tracking number and I entrusted someone there to act as my paid for agent to ensure all these happened.

I paid more yes, but that is the price for ensuring things work in Nigeria.

Let me assume, your case may not even have been closed at the council.

If you need a contact at the council, I can help. If not, I have let the cat out of the bag, over to you!

@ statement in bold...That will happen when hell freezes.

How can most nurses' in Nigeria get the respect they deserve when they haven't earned it? Very unprofessional lot.

1. They dress very unprofessional. Who wears sandals to work?
2. They are rude. It doesn't matter if a patient/ family yells at you, you are a professional and should act as such.
3. You are within your right to challenge a doctor's orders if there are concerns of contraindications or if the said orders will cause more ill-health to your patient. Again this is Nigeria where there are no laws protecting anybody.

When family members yell at you, not everyone of them enjoy doing that, it's because they and their relative are vulnerable at the time, and being helpless causes them to lash out..... There is something called Empathy and Active listening. Most times they are lashing out at you they are trying to tell you something..their fears, their concerns....why wasn't active listening imbedded in you lot brains in Uni?

LISTEN, THE MINUTE MOST OF YOU PUT SENTIMENTS ASIDE AND START TO WEAR YOUR PROFESSIONAL CAPS, THE LESS LIKELY THESE BEHAVIOURS WILL AFFECT YOU. Yes you are human, but you are also a professional. Take note of that. If you don't like the job, then find something else to do that will not put you in a crossfire between relatives/patients and other health practitioners...the minute you decide to care for someone, be prepared to take the good, the bad and the ugly. Patients can be nasty, yes they can...you don't think they are vulnerable at the time? You are talking about them not appreciating you....mentality like yours is the reason why the health care system has failed and still failing in Nigeria. Forget about them licking your feet and do your JOB. I repeat you are a professional and should act like one.

The summary to my epistle is this: The Nigerian Nurses'/Medical Board is very incompetent. The director of nursing and medical supervisors of health care facilities do not care...because I see the way some health practitioners talk to people while they are on duty..very incompetent lot. Health practitioners in developed countries wouldn't dare talk to anyone like that. You and your license are answerable to the board so you guard it with your life.

I'm sorry...not my intent to be rude. It's just sad when I watch our health practitioners' be rude to people
Have done everything to patient and relatives and they later start thanking doctor instead of you..a patient we did everything for later asked a doctor to give him his acc. Number bt told me that am just helping the doctor..
Nigerians are ungrateful to nurses..am a nurse/midwife and our culture is diff.from what is obtainable abroad so we should approach issues in nigerian way..

I have 2 very important questions for you....

1. WHAT IS THE NIGERIAN APPROACH TO ISSUES? . Please answer

2. HAS THE NIGERIAN APPROACH WORKED FOR OUR HEALTH CARE SYSTEM?

Wrong. There is no Nigerian way or "obodo oyibo" way. You should approach issues the professional way.

You want money from a patient? You want the patient to ask for your acct no so they can transfer money to you? Isnt it illegal to accept gifts from patients? My God...our health care system is indeed corrupt. My goodness....what is wrong with all of you? angry

I am a health practitioner myself and reading this post of yours makes me wanna drop my certificate in a refuse site.

Are you working as a nurse/midwife to get a thank you/gifts from patients? Are you working for every single patient of yours to worship the ground you walk on? Your priorities as a human being and midwife is misplaced

Nursing/midwifery should be banned from all Unis in Nigeria...until our faulty system is fixed..just read the nonsense you typed above and if any of that makes any sense to you, YOU NEED YOUR LICENSE REVOKED.

That's the reason nursing cannot thrive in nigeria..a labourer deserves his wage..hw much are you earning as a nurse in nigeria and abroad..
Nursing will only become a profession when it's moved to university..it is wrong to allow somebody take praise for my work or baboon dey work monkey dey chop only bc am a nurse I should be empathetic to clients..this is nigeria if you don't raise ur eyes you will be ridicule..

Banning nursing from the universities To achieve what, exactly This is an inappropriate utterance. If you don't value your profession, I do value mine and wouldn't want it to be belittled and degraded on a faceless forum because you had a disagreement with someone.
Scrapping will not solve the issue rather it will continue to compound it.. Are we going back to the eras of unschooled and untrained auxiliaries?. We should not cut our nose to spite our face. It is your opinion though which amount to zilch in the grand scheme of things.
Meanwhile this is a thread to get out of this hellhole to practice in a better climes where things work, so, please let's stick to it.

No we are not sticking to it all the way. The thread starter was one of the few that diverted this thread which led to me posting in the first place. I was quite comfortable being a guest and reading comments .

That being said, I stand by my earlier post. Nursing/midwifery should be banned until our nonsense system is fixed. I don't honestly care if you see my post as belittling and words demeaning...and you know why I don't care? because I am not attacking a person rather their professional ethics/code of practice or lack thereof.

If this self entitled nurses' and midwives on this thread is what Nigeria has bred, then my extended family's lives are at risk and I CANNOT HAVE IT.

We are talking about doing things the Nigerian way yet many of the so called Nigerian nurses are looking at different ways to vamoose out of the country.

If best practice/national standards(do we even have one in Nigeria?) are not adhered to and if everyone or even 30% of the nurses/midwives think or believe that they should be worshipped after each care administered...then I CALL FOR A BAN. BAN the course and REVOKE THE LICENSE TO PRACTICE OF THOSE INCAPABLE OF CARING LIKE "NIGHTINGALE".

Now we can stick to topic OR NOT

Let me not catch any one of you call the government corrupt because you all are worse. You are the corrupt system. I have nurses/midwives as friends in Nigeria and the reason why we are still friends is because they have a completely different mindset from you lot.

I will never deliberately disrespect a health practitioner but I swear most Nigerian health practitioners are one of the worse breed on this planet earth. No insult intended

Not that anyone will take me seriously here grin but most of you are looking at the UK and US. Have you lot looked at less populous countries as they present you with lots of opportunities due to shortage of nurses? Yes there is high demand for nurses in almost every country including the US and the UK but they are some countries with lesser population than the US and UK who are struggling to get health practitioners in to the point where they provide free accommodation and higher pay to keep you. I speak from experience here...not me directly...but cousins and inlaws and siblings.

If you are looking for a place where you can settle and settle rather quickly..I mean get your permanent residence and citizenship in such a short time..... look at those countries.

Don't join the bandwagon. WRITE YOUR OWN STORY

Thank you. Which countries are you talking about?

Countries with universal health care. Canada for instance has universal health care. Many Nigerian would choose US over Canada. Canadian passport lets you into about 173 countries visa free/visa on arrival

Have you looked into Australia? RNs earn a minimum of $31 per hour for first year graduates...more experience more money. Free health care. If you work in rural area you earn nothing less than 35 dollars (even more) per hour for first year graduate plus subsidized/free accomodation. Australian passport lets you into about 169 countries

I actually considered these countries you have listed and after giving it a long thought i decided to choose usa. I picked usa cause it has more opportunities, flexibility and the experience you get is endless. I'm not saying these things are not available in Canada or Australia i just think usa has the best of everything.

Now in Canada and Australia .. The minimum requirement to practice as a nurse is a Bsn degree in Nursing, most of us here are nursing /Midwifery school graduates thus if we decide to take this route then we have to work as an lpn which is not necessarily a bad thing by the way and then return back to school for a bscn degree. I actually prefer the Australian option since it's a year program and then you are given a BSc in Nursing but that costs a lot of money . Then there is that annoying ielts academic test you have to ace before starting the application.. Who wants to spend so much money on that test when that same money can be redirected to getting licensed in usa?
What about the living expenses in Australia? Rents are paid weekly and it's so ridiculously high!!

P.s I love Canada and it's my plan B.
Have you guys heard of omni college in Canada? They specialize in helping international nurses realize their dreams of working and living in Canada. If i had the money for tuition to spare i wouldn't think twice about it. They not only prepare us to get accustomed to their practice but also help in immigration and securing a job immediately after graduation.

Good points raised. The reason why I asked yous look into a country with universal healthcare is because it will save yous a lot of heartache in the future. Trust me on that one. You never know how important "free" healthcare is until you need it. Nothing compares to that.

I will choose Canada over the US. I have connections/families/permit in the US and that "American" dream is gradually fading. Opportunities are enormous you say but how long does it take for you to get a green card on arrival? The way you are pushing for opportunities is the same way millions of people are...how can you reach your full potential when you find yourself in a country with "opportunities" with 20 million people fighting to get a chance to explore these opportunities?

You actually sound like a nurse friend of mine who went to the US but had to divert to doing a masters in public health because things were not as rosy as she thought.

I just want all of you to get first hand experience from people who have lived in these countries before making a decision. Not all size fits all.

Canada has this massive land mass with about 34million people in it.....the chances of success are more realistic than the US. Australia has about 24 million people with opportunities un-describably good....and no you don't need to study for one year conversion program, there is a 3 months conversion program. I know someone who did hers from January to end of March this year.

The rent in the US is cheap. Things are cheap to buy....but their pay is less. Can you imagine getting less pay and have to pay for expensive stuffs?

The rent in Australia is expensive...but the pay is good....double the pay in the US. Can you imagine making so much money and expect everything else to be cheap?

Does it balance out? Maybe...this is when you explore other benefits each country throws at its people. Brings me back to health care. A woman in an LA had a fit/seizure. An ambulance was rung. When she recovered from it she almost died not from the seizure but from her trip to the hospital and the bills she had accumulated in her days there.

My sister inlaw (in the US) whose 4 year old son was running temp in 2012, took him to the hospital. They ran a bunch of tests on him for a few hours. She received a bill of over $4000 dollars and the boy did not even spend the night. Now this same sister inlaw of mine is Australian. Moved to America because of her husband and almost died of heart attack when she got the bill...why? because if her family remained in Australia, they wouldn't pay a dime on hospital bill. This same sister inlaw of mine who happens to be a chemical engineer would make atleast $10000 every 2 weeks in Australia. Moved to America and isn't making even half of that in a month in America. The opportunities are there but before you, thousands and millions of people are fighting. Good luck in getting heard first.

E.g in 2012. A waitress in new York earn $4.50 per hour. Little wonder they rely on tips.

E.g in 2012. A waitress in Australia is earning $25 per hour. Little wonder people do not leave tips. The few times I have left tips, they turned it down.

It is okay for you to choose the country you want or prefer but after reading your posts I thought it wise to alert other people of the pros and cons of living in these countries before someone decides to follow your advise and cry "had I known" in the nearest future...to some people it's so much fun saying "hey I live in America" no be for mouth alone.

No gun control in America. No one is safe. You can be in the shops and one mad man will walk in and release fire. It doesn't end in American dream. It ends in quality of life and the need to feel safe wherever you are.

Like I said you need first hand information not popular beliefs

The problems have to do with the nursing council back home having a policy of attaching their transcript to CGFNS documentation instead of filling the documentation the CGFNS sends.

I just hope you don't end up facing the same trouble.

Once that is cleared will be able to take the NCLEX exam

Cool. So my timing was on the mark!

Like you, I got an email from cgfns.

I hope i dont encounter that problem. They are yet to receive my transcripts from my school of Nursing. Is it that they compare the one from nursing council with the one from the school?

Australia has about 24 million people with opportunities un-describably good....and no
you don't need to study for one year conversion program, there is a 3 months conversion program

It is okay for you to choose the country you want or prefer but after reading your posts
I thought it wise to alert other people of the pros and cons of living in these countries before someone decides to follow your advise and cry "had I known" in the nearest future...
to some people it's so much fun saying "hey I live in America" no be for mouth alone.

No gun control in America. No one is safe. You can be in the shops and one mad man will walk in and release fire. It doesn't end in American dream. It ends in quality of life and the need to feel safe wherever you are.

Like I said you need first hand information not popular beliefs

ok.
Firstly, I know how important free healthcare is and how easy it is to get a permanent residence in Canada compared to usa that is another reason why Canada is my plan B.

Secondly, I wasn't talking about the conversion program. That can only be taken assuming you are eligible to practice as a nurse. Most times we have deficiencies which we have to go back to school to complete and that is why i talked about the one year RN to bsn program for 1 year.

Thirdly, I didnt advice anyone to choose usa. I just stated why i chose it.

I was genuinely going to argue the bold comment of yours but thought against it. After reading that comment of yours, IT IS VERY CLEAR TO ME THAT YOU KNOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT NURSING IN AUSTRALIA. Please I beg you, do not misinform people. It is okay to guess your answer but please dont act like you know what happens when you apply to the Nurses' Board in Australia. You are the first Nigerian that I know that mentioned the above and this is coming from someone who knows things about that country.

There is no Nigerian/Zimbabwean/Zambian who I have showed the way that has come back to me talking about studying for one year(different from conversion program). Yes every foreign nurse must do a conversion/bridging program. People choose either the 3 months program or 1 year. You said you weren't talking about a conversion program but the one year study you are talking about is called a conversion program in Australia and that is why I said you lack information about certain countries and their rules.

I saw earlier that someone queried you on the list of highest and lowest paid states for nurses in America. Though you came back and countered what they said...but those people who queried you might actually live in the US and know that that rate per hour you put up there is false
