I think people really need to be reminded that the DS-160 is really an important piece of document that goes a long way in determining one's VISA approval/denial.

Don't just fill it for filling sake and prepare day and night for oral interview. View your DS-160 as you cuz this piece is already explaining who you are and your mission before you're asked the first question.

So my advise would be to take time fill your DS-160 like your life depends on it.

For example: (I stand corrected tho cuz I'm still learning too) I remember a page on the DS-160 where the applicant is asked to list at least two people (non-family members) who are aware of one's United States mission. This I believe has something to do with your ties to your Country.

Now if you would fill such. Think about this as filling your recommendation module for Graduate study.

Tips: At least you'd know two people that are doing well in any of the registered companies in Nigeria.

Use their name and fill in their company addresses.

For contact: Use their officio e-mail addresses. (Not Gmail, yahoomail e.t.c) I'm not saying referees can't use free email service but I'd like to believe that officio email goes a long way in boosting that your app.

V.Os are trained/paid to pay attention to details. Take your time to fill DS-160. It is very important.

Like I wrote earlier... It is just a guess work, I know nothing before una attack me. My 2 cents.

I'd like to still show appreciation to Bigfrancis and Juntod tho... I met these guys here and mehn, they've been really great. They've been like my compass since I entered this country. Awesome dudes to date.

In other news, let's see what the official exchange rate is as recognized internationally at the moment. We should be keenly watching this.

It doesn't really matter, if he needs your help in explaining why he is choosing a course of study the interview probably isn't going to go very far...

hahahahah i knew your eyes are everywhere grin......

However our educational system is different , we learn in Nigeria mostly the academic side and not the whole package of how express yourself or to sell ourselves and put that in words .

It doesn't mean the applicant would not excel if given the chance , Some are just not taught or exposed yet on some other basic skills apart from academic . Hopefully we put them straight on Nairaland and build each other up

Some applicants get so "prepared" that they can't answer the questions that are being asked of them. They just want to give their rehearsed speeches. Don't be that applicant. It's a sure way to get refused a visa.

It's really quite a simple process; you fill out your own application, you answer the questions honestly, and then the determination is made if you qualify for the visa or not under U.S. law. That is not to say that everyone who answers honestly is qualified, because they aren't necessarily, but once you start making up crazy stories or telling lies it no longer matters if you are qualified. Plenty of applicants that are probably qualified get refused every day because they think they need to craft a story and it doesn't make sense.

God bless Yankee VO's.
Guys, I have said this before. Preparation is not needed.
I know I asked but looking at someone's transcript is not needed.
A lot of people use people's answer while at the interview.

Why did my woman choose her school = Because it was within our budget. Finish, no long thing (the cheapest amongst the others we researched). If you use this answer but lack confidence you might be denied.

How many schools did we apply to = Only 1

Any GRE= No GRE

VO's don't really care about account statement and all that. If you have so much money, apply for Green card under investor class or better still go to Malta and invest $500,000 and you will be given passport in 1 week.

To each his/her own ......I do not agree with this statement at all . Over preparation yes dont over do it or it makes you more nervous but to say Preparation is not needed , PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHAT ADVICE YOU TAKE ...lol

I am not saying Copy others and have always said be truthful but as in every interview its good to prepare.

Have an idea of past questions and learn from it . For example most people would not view the curriculum of their courses , but noting that is it a commonly asked question that would help in your visa preparation.

Be truthful Yes , be well prepared to know in details what you are applying for and why you should be given Yes. FOCUS ON THE EXACT QUESTION ASKED AND ANSWER WELL. When you are informed of a process then you are better prepared in any areas of LIFE

but to say no prepare, no read transcript .... ABEG even OYIBO prepare for interviews so PLEASE STOP IT (mevisbleek) . JUST STOP .lol

Good Morning Madame,

Hope this message meets you well. Thanks for your response.

Seriously, what are applicants preparing for, to answer simple question like, why the school, why the program, why the city, who is sponsoring you, what are your plans after the program, what course would you be taking in school? Really? A true student who completed his/her application on their own will be able to answer these questions immediately after hitting "send application".

Well, I am sorry guess all students are different. I guess some apply to any school without proper research because they just want to leave naija.

For a student to pick a school, he or she would have had these questions going through their thought process.

Well, you are right. I don't expect an Undergrad to know much about what they are going for. smiley
No disrespect to you my dear.
Please, pardon me if my response sounds rude.

I'm in support of this. Preparation is essential. One major reason why I was denied the first time was because I couldn't state my courses clearly.

And it is even more essential to do a lot of deep research about one's school of choice, this would help any individual when trying to convince a VO why he/she chose the school. It took me the third try on why I chose my school before the VO was finally convinced. If I hadn't prepared well, I would have gone numb and result would have been "sorry blah blah"

Read, glance through transcripts, study likely questions, rephrase them in your own way, visit your school website often and know some of your potential instructors' name before the interview cuz it could come in handy when defending your goal.

Prepare in every way but never cram.

Good Day Sir,

Seriously, deep down in your heart, do you want to tell me that you had no idea why you chose your school or you were trying to spit out a perfect Naira land answer to the VO?
We have true reasons why we do what we do in life but we try to embellish to make it more appealing to others. Honesty is the key in everything one does in life.

Truthfully, you did not peruse the courses offered in the program you were going for?

Well, its all good. Have a wonderful day, Sir.

I'm not saying I didn't know why I chose the school. All I'm saying is, you need to back up your reason with other stuff you'd find on the school website. Your reason might not be convincing to the VO and if it's the VO that offers another opportunity for applicants to give more reasons, would you repeat same unconvincing stuff or pick another good reason from your archive and dish it out?

And concerning the courses, I knew my courses when I went for my first interview... what I didn't know was what makes these courses tick. Hence the reason why it was difficult for me to consistently integrate my courses clearly into my response on my first interview.

But the second time, I was able to nail every word in the head even while I was a lil bit shaky. I mean syncing Pure Physics, Information Technology and Project Management together in a sentence to save my life only came through cuz of good preparation.

I'm not in support of cramming tho

I agree with you Madame, this is why I said younger students might have no idea of what they are going for. I still believe that a mature student who applies him/herself does not need to stay up at night over thinking things. I mean it's only a visa interview.

I have continually read people's post on this trend and prepared hard for possible questions and best possible answer.

I was however refused after so much preparation. Interview transcript below

VO: What are you going to do in the US
Me; I am going for Masters in Business Administration

VO: What are you doing now?
Me: I am customer care executive working with U-connect Niigeria Ltd

VO: Who is sponsoring you?
Me; I am sponsoring myself

VO: If you complete your programme , what will u be doing when you come back
Me; I am taking a study leave and will be coming back to continue my job
.

VO: What are the courses you will be doing?
Me: International Biz and soceity, Quantitative methods, Biz research methods

VO; she started typing for long and gave me the blue paper.

No document asked at all.
I had all my documents; Letter from my employers confirming I applied for study leave, Bank statement, payslips for 7months, Letter of employment for present and previous work place, Academic certificates, My marraige certificate and son's birth certificate.

Behold was another guy beside me shaking as he was answering questions from male VO and was granted his visa.

I intend applying again b4 my school resumes in August. Any advise

You bleep up here and I believe that's where the VO made the final decision.

You gave wrong answer to the bold.. How will you take study leave again when you just returned and finished one study leave? It sounds strange..

Just reason the bold words very well.. In your next interview understand the questions before you give an answer
