logica: Yoruba culture believes men and women are equal? Do you care to share? I'm interesting in learning. |
Re: Lady Blasts Olori Wuraola And Freeze Over Gender Equality In Open Letter by logica(m): 5:50pm On Jun 20, 2016 |
bukatyne:First are you Yoruba or not? Second, have you noticed all those blasting Wuraola and Freeze (who happen to be Yoruba) are NOT Yoruba (specifically are Igbo)? We are from different ethnicities which do NOT share the same culture. Everyone is speaking for his/her own culture. Check which country first allowed women to vote. You will see Finland. Meanwhile women had a vote in Yoruba land through the Iya 'loja who represented them in the royal court long before 1893. I have long noticed the disdain from my Igbo neighbors when my wife represented the family at meetings. No Yoruba will find this odd. There is a reason Yoruba women were long viewed as free-spirited and independent. (e.g Mrs Ransome Kuti). No Yoruba family will give preferential treatment to the males over the females. What we believe is equality in diversity. |

bukatyne:Good. So why do you think Yoruba women don't have equal rights as Yoruba men? |
Re: Lady Blasts Olori Wuraola And Freeze Over Gender Equality In Open Letter by bukatyne(f): 6:14pm On Jun 20, 2016 |
logica: Now this is dicey. First, I don't think there is really an issue of physical inequality, it is more of mental that's why you ask a typical man/woman and you get 'we are not equal thingy' even though they are in the same class or get the same pay for same job. As per marriage, this has more to do with the man you marry. if you marry a man that treats you inferior, your luck. If you married a man who believes you must see yourself as inferior to him before you both can have peace; good for you. If money is the defining factor of equality for you.... your pot of soup (because I can see a lot of 'I pay a,b,c bills; my husband paid etc. so we are not equal) As to your question: I do not believe Yoruba culture see men and women as equals. This is different from what individuals decide to do with people they interacted it. So the fact a random Yoruba man sees a woman as his equal doesn't mean he is following his culture. My opinion on the Gender Equality Bill: It is an absolute waste of time. A bill is not enough for me to feel equal or not. If your husband sees you as inferior, 100 bills cannot change his mindset towards you. If a woman feels inferior, 100 bills would still not do the magic. It is either you believe you are inferior or not. It is a state of mind. |

bukatyne:...yet you cannot give an example from Yoruba culture favoring men over women? You can't state a law or practice when I cited the example of Iya 'loja which underscored the egalitarian nature of Yoruba society? I am glad you did observe that gender equality is more at the personal level; but it will be difficult to argue that Yoruba culture discriminates against women. |
Re: Lady Blasts Olori Wuraola And Freeze Over Gender Equality In Open Letter by bukatyne(f): 6:27pm On Jun 20, 2016 |
logica: It will also be difficult to argue that Yoruba Culture doesn't discriminate against women. I thought you wanted to cite examples of Yoruba cultural practices that were 'egalitarian' |
Re: Lady Blasts Olori Wuraola And Freeze Over Gender Equality In Open Letter by logica(m): 6:28pm On Jun 20, 2016 |
bukatyne:Lol. You missed the example I gave? You can't give ONE example of Yoruba culture discriminating against women? |
Re: Lady Blasts Olori Wuraola And Freeze Over Gender Equality In Open Letter by bukatyne(f): 6:37pm On Jun 20, 2016 |
logica: If Yoruba culture doesn't discriminate against women, why does the average Nigerian frown against gender equality? What's the source? |
Re: Lady Blasts Olori Wuraola And Freeze Over Gender Equality In Open Letter by logica(m): 6:40pm On Jun 20, 2016 |
bukatyne:Madam, I already pointed out the source right in my first post (hint - Yoruba is not the only ethnicity in Nigeria). Read it again and understand. Regards. |
Re: Lady Blasts Olori Wuraola And Freeze Over Gender Equality In Open Letter by bukatyne(f): 6:43pm On Jun 20, 2016 |
logica: This is your first post to me. logica: Are you referring to another one? |
Re: Lady Blasts Olori Wuraola And Freeze Over Gender Equality In Open Letter by logica(m): 6:54pm On Jun 20, 2016 |
bukatyne:Ha. OK. That must be the second. In any case I pointed out that Yorubas generally don't see how Nigerian Constitution affects our culture which already is egalitarian and doesn't discriminate against women. I wonder where your own school of thought is from, other than influence from ethnicities other than Yoruba. You will observe that those most vocal about women's rights et la are not Yoruba. They are merely addressing their own cultures. If you actually know your culture (since you claim to be Yoruba) your views will be quite different. |

adimsmt: Lol you still don't get the point and you seem to soon. All I need tell you is, if equality is the case then there should be no buts, its should be the whole package(the good the bad the ugly and the very ugly). And also two kings won't rule u know? They wont always have the same decisions over things and that would constantly cause quarrel even tho you might suggest dialogue but dialogue won't always work on so many things. But what if the man has a view and the woman suggests other ways(knowing he still has the decisions in his hands), they can compare and contrast and see possible outcomes...its the duty of a man to listen. #notogenderequality we were not meant to be. |
