Re: Starting An Oil Palm Plantation by okine4real: 12:18am On Jun 02, 2013 Also wanting to cheap in some ideas that just stumbled into mine head. One of the main reason most farmers dont make enough profit is because they spend more money hiring labour. Mine Plantation has not started yet, but due to what i have read and mine experence in mine present business, i know that the higher your hired Laboured, the lower your profit. As for me, if i want to Harvest mine Palms, it would be mine staffs that would be harvesting, i would not hire Labour. Also to make your Harvest Fast and for your Staff not to get tired easily while harvesting, i would use a mechcalnized Harvesting tool. I dont know if you have seen this tool before... The tool is about 6inch long, it as a kind of generator at the base which you would start like a generator, then the otherside of the tool as an opening mouth. The tool has different harvesting technique, it is a sickle, cutlass, shovel mouth etc So when you want to harvest you just insert any the kind of technique you want to use and off you go. In two seconds you are through with a particular tree. So while waste your time paying villagers or a labourer 100 Naira to help you harvest just one tree? Also there is also another Machine you can use to weed your plantation? Just like those machines you see, those farmers use in triming grasses along Ikorodu road. Instead of hairing Labours to weed your plantation, just buy like 3pc of the machines and when your staffs are free in the factory, drive them down to the plantation for them to weed. But in all, Management is still the key.... If you can manage your plantation well..... You would always be smiling to the bank. Any farmer in the house should please shed some light on mine thread.................... QUESTION: @ okine4real. Just how much do the mechanized harvesting tool and the trimming machine cost and where can one purchase them? |
Re: Starting An Oil Palm Plantation by tjadeniyi(m): 8:19pm On Jul 10, 2016 |
@Enochadem. Your suggestions/imaginations are correct and OK. But with my experience not that economical to follow. I can tell you categorically here that 70% workers of Okomu and Presco are contract/adhoc staff. Even NIFOR have more contract harvesters, maintenance (clearing) staffers than permanent. Major reason is that that Oil-Palm plantation is seasonal agribusiness. You need more hands in harvesting during the season and no need need in keeping them when the bunches are less. If you have a mature and producing plantation, your slashing schedule won't be more than 4 times in a year which you can hire people to do within those periods rather than keeping monthly workers that will be asking for salary for complete a year and also they will be asking for increment all the time. If your farm is well located the permanent workers needed are: Farm Supervisor or Manager Security (ies) Operator(s) (if mechanized). Hire others. Personal opinion though but from experience. |

Hello Everyone, Just want to commend d good job thus far. I have an inherited palm plantation roughly 10hectares. Trees are about 30yrs old so I'll say it's at its peak though they can produce a little less optimally for another 20yrs. As regards d spacing, ours is 8x8m. Going to slowly start phasing out the trees section by section. As regards the machines, if your plantation isn't in the heart of the rainforest then it's ok to use the machines. I've used them and I'll advice against buying them cos they can't withstand the grown up weeds. If u must buy them due to the topology of your area the go for the powerful ones. Preferably from 43cc and up and u might need to do some fabrication on the handle to steel rods as again the aluminium pipes. I have resolved to resolved to go for much higher due to the size of my palm plantation. After extensive research I discovered the M Seppi attachment to a tractor or skid steer. My brother, the work wen dey this business no be here O! It's profitable but u go sweat. Major challenge being getting workers to harvest 12-20m tall trees. At this stage even the pole harvesters don't work. You need those Calabar winchi boys to do their thing and of course d yanga that follows. Back to that attachment I alluded to earlier, buying this will take away a whole lot of problems cos it's something you can operate yourself and brush your plantation once or twice every year. The advantage of this implement is that it immediately turns all other vegetation in the plantation into manure for the plantation. 3 Likes |

[img][/img] Am currently setting up a 1,500 hectare plantation. We just finished transplanting 300 hectares. We shall plant the remaining next year. Worthwhile and futuristic venture. Also capital intensive. We are ready to wait for 4 years before we celebrate. 2019 is around the corner

Hello House, I believe some grown-up plantation owners are smiling to their banks at this moment, as the price of all products from oil-palm are appreciating everyday. You of the maturing plantations too will soon join the club. You the potentials too will reach there; it is a matter of time. Wishing you all "Happy Profiting Agribusiness" moment. |
