Fulaman198: I've heard of the preference of Nigerian Fulanis to speak Hausa instead of Fulani. Which states in Nigeria are predominantly Fulani speaking or have Fulani-speaking people? Also, what percentage of all Fulanis in Nigeria speak Fulani? 2 Likes |

bigfrancis21: You are correct in that Fulanis of mainly the NW engage communication in the Hausa language (Sokoto, Katsina, etc.). In Nigeria, the states in which Fulanis speak the Fulfulde language (Fulani language which can also be called Pulaar sometimes) are my home state Adamawa, Taraba, and Gombe. Most Fulanis in these regions are proficient in both Fulfulde and Hausa. As you may know Adamawa extends into Adamaoua of Cameroon. To answer your second question about percentage of Fulanis in Nigeria that speak Fulani well I'd say roughly 40 - 45%. There are about 10 million Fulani speakers total and I believe slightly over 20 million ethnic Fulanis from both the NW and NE regions of Nigeria. Excellent question. |

mujaya1: Adamawaare is the name of the Fulani dialect in Adamawa, NG. Adamawa extends into Adamaoua of Cameroon and to the Fulani of both Nigeria and Cameroon, we consider ourselves the same. We speak the same Fulani dialect as do the Fulanis in Eastern Niger Republic, Northern Cameroon, Chad, Central Afr. Republic and Sudan. I have never come across an Igbo that speaks Fulfulde. I have however come across an Igbo that speaks Hausa. 4 Likes 1 Share |

mujaya1: Whilst some of what you say is true, not everyone has the stereotypical Fulani nose (look at Ahmadu Ahidjo for instance). Now, I do understand what you mean don't get me wrong and for the most part you are right. I'm not sure if people "love us" so to say. In other African countries they may not sure about Nigeria based on what I have seen on NL forums. 1 Like |

Fulaman198:so what is the different between fulani of nigeria and other african country, and their name is different from our name, like Bah, sore, jalloh |
Re: A Lesson To Fulani On NL, Never Forget Whom You Are by Fulaman198(m): 4:09pm On Jun 22, 2016 |
mujaya1: Fulanis of other parts of West Africa use native Fulani names like Jalloh/Diallo which are the same, Ba/Bah, Sow, Balde, Ka/Kah, etc. In Adamawa, there are Fulani that use native Fulani names like Gelajo, Gajo, Nyako, etc. Though in other parts of Nigeria Islamised names are more common than their respective Fulani names. That is everywhere outside of Adamawa. Nigerian Fulanis are also more religiously strict except for the Mbororo'en. 1 Like |

Fulaman198: Most tend to underrate the population of Fulfulde speaking Fulani in the Northwest due to their minority status. But I believe the number of Fulfulde speaking Fulani in Kano alone supersedes those in Taraba state. By my own analysis their population is between 1.4-1.8 million native speakers. Its interesting to know that all elected deputy governors in kano from 1999 to 2015 are all Fulfulde speaking Fulani, the present Governor was a two time former deputy governor and he is a Fulfulde speaking Fulani. 1 Like |

bigfrancis21: "Preference" I think the right phrase should be something like "tend to speak". Because they dont prefer speaking Hausa over Fulfulde but the environment tend to force them to. |

mujaya1: I do not think she speaks Fulfulde well, but she understands it well because she was once married to a Fulani man from Adamawa (Mubi)and lived there for almost 20yrs after her marriage with the Emir's father ( Ciroma Aminu Sanusi) was dissolved by Emir Sanusi 1. So the present Emir (sanusi 2) have half brothers and sisters that speak Fulfulde fluently, but he and his full sister donot speak or even understand Fulfulde. As for the Sultan not speaking Fulfulde that is normal for fulbe Royal houses in the North~West, non of them speak it any longer due to a policy which the Shehu ( Usman bi fodiyo ) himself promulgated in secret to all fulbe Royal houses after the Jihad was successful. 2 Likes |
