HAHAHAHAHAHA..... In 2014 I was asked by my friends why I still wanted to venture into transportation business when UBER was entering the market with full force... I only told them... "the Nigerian factor"

I was a bit skeptical with the reviews I read about them but then I designed and structured my business to favor all factors involved in the Nigerian business sector..... Though a small business but with great potential and immense growth my transportation business has been going on smoothly and what started with one car now has 3 cars and still growing....

I got more convinced last year when an UBER partner approached me with partnership in my business. He was going to put his 5 cars which were on UBER on me but I turned it down because I wasn't going to become a slave to someone just because they have cash to float in my face.

You want to run a business with me, we both bare the assets and liability... I didn't even know this page existed all this while....

Uber is going to fail in Nigeria as they have failed in New York and LA.

The only reason they are still here is because we Nigerians are gullible. we wait for things to happen before we see opportunity in them. The transportation industry in this country especially Lagos is a multi billion naira business that is yet to be tapped into but you need to come from the angle of service offering and not primarily money making venture to hit the mark.

I conveniently gross 1million in sales on a monthly basis and just working harder to raise that mark and minimize trip cancellations.

model your business.... offer services people want and you're in money.....

Meanwhile let me go post my own topic on investment as I need an equity investor... its time for expansion grin

Guys what do think of Uber's latest move on criteria for cars

"For a vehicle to be eligible for Uber in Nigeria, it must meet the following standards:

UberX Vehicles must be 2006 or newer while UberSELECT must be 2012 or newer
No mileage restriction"

I think Uber just screwed up their existing partners who have spent a lot of money to buy newer vehicles and now moved on to Uber select as people will generally use UBERX if at all. Now every one will have a vehicle on Uber making it very competitive and less rewarding. Existing partners how are you managing with the new criteria and competition? Your thoughts appreciated
is it true that is only sedan car that is accepted and no hatches back

I love your assessment. I'm also in the Car Hire business and I don't particularly agree with the Uber model.

I'll love to connect with you. I also have a whatsapp group for individuals involved in Car Hire and transportation business. We network and share ideas.

Sometimes I wonder why people say what they are not sure of with so much confidence! Ignorance is far better than half knowledge in some cases. Pls "drill" your source of info before you "spill" the info. That way, our world will be better.

In Lagos, no Uber inspection centre verifies the VIN to check a car's title (clean or salvage) as at today 24th June 2016. Thanks!

My source is the uber website itself! Uber uses a Third party for inspections now and part of the requirement is "clean title"

Now whether the garage doing the inspection actually checks the vin or not is open for debate... But I know they are supposed to!

You are so quick to call someone ignorant but then, you have no verified information yourself! Who's the ignorant one now?!?

Even when Uber was doing the car assessment themselves, they never checked VIN. Net, Uber does not check VIN.

Uber is a $63BN business in over 450 cities in over 70 countries. The fact that I or you have some issues on Uber Lagos does not determine whether or not their business model is successful.

I guess folks have been using the term successful quite loosely. In all likelihood, Uber will continue to be profitable to itself in Nigeria and considering how flexible the company is, they will probably continue to modify their business model to suit the environment.
The question is, will it continue to be profitable for you or me to take a loan, buy a car and employ someone to drive on Uber? Or over time, will it only be profitable for drivers to own their cars on the platform? Perhaps the regular kabu kabu guy will hustle small and upgrade his vehicle to Uber standards so he can make a decent living. Or peeps will stick to the HP model. Either way, the customers win.
Starting my only car on the platform next week. Not yet buying a replacement sha. Will wait and see if it makes sense financially.

Please where can one get the required hackney permit requested by uber? And how much is it?
Secondly, what are the things they look out for at the vehicle inspection?

It's the licencing authority that issues it just like your normal vehicle licence. You can go to anyone closest to you. Alternatively, if you dont have the time for that, there's a firm that works in conjunction with UBER Nigeria called VisaCover. For N5,500 they'll help you get it. They'll send you a soft copy first and then deliver the hardcopy to any address you supply them.

Hi Guys,

I have a question. I finally put my 2010 corolla this week on a 3 month trial to see if this Uber is viable for me, though my driver has performed relatively well but his fuel consumption or claims has almost wiped me out. The guy claims he has used almost 3 tanks in less than a week which are mostly unreceipted. Experienced partners aka fanex and tokyo bulls how do you manage the fuel aspect as it's the only loophole I'm struggling to close now? Please your advise is highly appreciated. Thanks.

Give him a target of 30 or 35k weekly, and he has to buy fuel himself and do other things himself. He would only deliver 30 or 35k every week to you.

to be honest your driver isnt doing badly with fuel. He's still honest. budget 5 - 6k fuel daily for a return of arud 50k a week and expect repairs and maintenance to start taking 30% of you profit within 3 months otherwise, riders will start complaining to uber.

UBER is not a viable business if you are not gonna be driving it yourself. you will certainly feed your family on uber but dont expect to multiply your investment.

3.5% is possible with AXA Mansard if you use one of their internal DSAs. And their response time is super fantastic so far for me. Please be careful with insurance. Many will still not pay your claims in 4 months so what's the point of being on comprehensive insurance and your mind can't be at rest?

You are bringing emotions into business. You are not NNPC. You are not Total. You are not FGN. You are not the right person to complain to on fuel. The driver can complain but not to you. Give him a clear target and make sure the car is in top shape. I don't allow drivers bore my life with stories. If you want to work, please go and work. I don't listen to BS. Deliver X as gross/net income. If you can't, I'll look for someone else who can. I'm not a friend with my drivers. It's pure business.

So how long will it take to make the capitala + profit on a 2010 Corolla if all he gets is 30K per week? Remember it's business.
