A library I visited. Built about 40 years ago-at a cost of of $800k-an expansion is built close by for about 23 Million dollars. This got me thinking $23 Million for a library-after building one 40 years before for $800k-definitely means the community and government has seen the benefits of having a library. I also learnt that community meetings were called before the County embarked on the new expansion. If Nigeria is to get to where we need to be, we must rapidly acquire knowledge. In my entire life in Nigeria, aside from University and secondary school-I only went to a public library twice. These libraries I have visited here in the USA are filled with old and young.

Please anyone who is reading this post, be very careful. As a black person born and raised and in the US, almost half of what the poster says is not true. If you do not have any money or a support system, do not come over here. You will be working 3 jobs trying to survive. If you are educated, make sure you are going directly into a university so you can get an American degree and make a good salary from one job. I know quite a few Nigerian doctors and professors, but that is not the case for all Nigerians.

I won't get into why it seems black Americans are not able to obtain the same rate of education as Nigerians, but it is truly due to systematic racism. There is a lot of opportunity in the US, but this is not an equal opportunity place. Please remember you are still black to the white man. Initially they will treat you kind because you have seem different with your accent. However the work place will make you wake up quickly. It doesn't matter what tribe you come from. They see you as black and eventually you will realize what that means.

The good news for Nigerians is that they have a gateway to make it here if they do the right thing starting off. Make sure you have someone here who can support you for the first 6 months if you are coming here without a job. Don't end up like some of your brethren running credit card scams, driving taxis and working themselves to death for nothing. Do you ever wonder why your family member in the US can't send any money home? It's because the cost of living here is high and you have to pay for everything. I know a Nigerian young woman right now who came here with a smile on here face about 6 months ago and is now asking me if I know where she could find a job just to survive. After 5 years time, I can assure you the poster will see things differently about my country. Good luck to all of you.

hm

i hear u , but staying in naija is worse, especially wen u have no education.

i know pple who dropped out of secondary school in nigeria, found their way to america or uk and are now nurses, radiologists or in other medical fields.

if u are not connected in nigeria and u have no education and u somehow find an avenue to get urself to America, pls dont even go home to take a shower or change ur clothes, quickly rush urself to the airport.

my in law is a taxi driver in America, but he has single handedly lifted his whole family out of porverty, even his younger that he sponsored in university is still dependent on this same taxi driver 4yrs after graduation as the man cant get a job.

hard work never killed anyone.

I agree with the above except the taxi driver bit. I also believe the US is better than Nigeria no doubt. I was arguing sometime back with another Nairalander about the same thing. The opportunities are there in the US no doubt, but what are your chances of getting close to these opportunities when millions of people are fighting for the same thing?

A friend of mine (Twin A) and her twin sister (twin B) had three options: 1)Canada, 2)Australia , 3)US. Twin A chose the US even when twin B was pushing for them to try the options 1 and 2. Twin B refused option 3 and tried 1 and 2. Option 2 "answered" her first in fact she was in country 2 when country 1 "answered" her. She ended up with the two permanent residence. Fast forward 19 months later. Twin A who chose option 3 was still looking for a way to settle. Twin B was all settled, a good paying job, a car, free health care, got herself a mortgage-her own house, plus had her permanent residence.

To some it's all about living the AMERICAN DREAM. They don't realise what they are getting themselves into until they get in. You cannot discourage these lot. Their mind is made up and that it is...give them time, long enough for the scale to fall off their eyes.

Out of those 3 options. option 2 seems to be the best over option 1 and 3. i.e from survey. This survey was from professional colleagues I have asked that have migrated within option 1 and 2 and option 2 and 3.

Well said. America does a good job selling themselves. In reality it's more of a 2 tier system (rich/poor) with the middle class slipping away. I had a cousin who wanted to do a master's abroad. I told him to choose option 1 Canada where I stay. He insisted he'll go and chase the America dream. After his master's he spent years trying to get status and finally came to Canada as a skilled workers. Got his pr before landing and has got a job with a major bank and his own place in a few months. My point is DO YOUR RESEARCH.

Exactly. It's of no use begging them to see the light. Like your cousin, just let them be and make that mistake and hopefully learn from it. The problem though is not everyone will get a second chance like your cousin, so people need to research properly before making this big decision. A caucasian colleague of mine got married to a caucasian American 2 years ago. She was looking forward to moving to the US but her husband talked her out of it. The husband left the states and works in one of the biggest oil and gas companies here as an Engineer and she is still enjoying her 1 year maternity leave. They can afford to have her stay at home for 1 year post birth. Her hubby said staying at home for 1 year in the states would make him work over time to provide for his family and he still wouldn't be able to keep up, so wifey would have to return to work after 3 months). If an "oyibo" can talk people out of migrating to his country, what more can I say?

Yes there are people who have succeeded in the states but not all "size fits all". Research. I have a friend who refused to consider option 1 but c hose 3. Did her Masters in public health and is now looking for a way to settle. This person is a nurse/midwife. I told her to consider option 1 since it's the closest to the US. She refused. See the high demand of nurses in option 1 and some silly woman refused to consider. Less population (35 million people) compared to over 300 million US. Tell me how everyone think they will make it there?

I live in option 2 and have lived here for yearssss. I have always said that if for some reason I get fed up of option 2 and need to migrate to another country in the future, IT IS DEFINITELY OPTION 1.
