Is Magun (thunderbolt) Real? by LordOfNaira: 12:22pm On Jul 02, 2016 |
I am not a Nigerian but my mother is a Nigerian and a Yoruba woman from Ila. I was exposed to the Yoruba culture at a young age and I fell in love with it. Apart from the practise of making a dead person go after its killer(s) (called "ro oku" in Yoruba), another stuff that baffles me is "magun" which I would translate as "Don't or Do not climb". It is a charm put on a woman suspected of promiscuity by her husband or a family member (this is my own way of defining the phenomenon). Any man who climbs the woman after that time will surely die. There are variations to "manner of dying". Some say the man will start demanding for water and after which he would start crowing like a cock and would eventually attempt to summersault three times. Another set believes the victim will dry up gradually and eventually die. So many variations. Now, last week, my maternal grandfather's driver became seriously sick. When I saw him three days ago, he looked very skinny. He assured us that he was recovering and would soon be back to his post. Yesterday, we heard that he had passed away. I was shocked by the news. Someone I had seen two days ago and even advised to get blood tonic to aid quick recovery. It was later we started hearing stories that he had been involved with a married woman. The husband of the woman was said to have given several warnings to my grandfather's driver to leave his wife alone but the warnings were not heeded. Then a week to his death, he was said to have been affected by magun and some people had quickly rushed him to a babalowo (an Ifa priest) who stopped him from summersaulting three times but was not able to stop him from drying up and dying. This story still baffles me. Can magun be real |
