My newly born baby can suck all day. As in non stop.

Wife said we get baby food to augment breast milk, but my doctor said no baby formula now, till at least three month.
Am confused. I need suggestions, and advice on what to do.
My boy is just 13days old.

Your wife is the one breastfeeding not you, bro. Let her add formula if the strain is getting too much. Her life and health first b4 doc's recommendation. Exclusive has never been compulsory. Its only recommended. Even some who advocate it in public, give their babies formula in private. Be wise

Exclusive breastfeeding is not for every baby.It is recommended, but it can't work for every child.
It didn't work for my kids except their mama wan collapse. There are some babies that just can't get enough.

Don't be stoopid.
Is it that expensive/difficult to upgrade whatever OS your brain runs on? angry

@OP, EBF isn't for every child, though highly recommended _it isn't compulsory. If your lil one is a 'breast milk monster', please supplement with formula.

I'm not surprised. Naturally, boys eat more than girls. Be patient, the food consumption will soon reduce and if after one month, it doesn't, then you can introduce baby formula. But to be honest with you, EBF is very much advisable. If your boy can't cope however, it means he's one of those babies whose EBF is not for.

I did EBF for my 1st and 2nd children for good 4 months but with my last boy, I managed till 84 days, after which I complimented it with soy milk.

Regards to your wife.

Breast feeding doesn't only benefit the baby, but also the mother.

It will help her lose the baby weight, and also help her tommy come down.

It also helps with the bonding between mother and child.

Your wife needs to eat more regularly, healthy foods by the way, take more fluids/ water, fruits and veggies.

You're also spared the extra expenses of baby formula.

Your wife also wouldn't have to bother with constantly washing and sterilising the feeding bottles.

Your baby also has a reduced risk of having diarrheal disease which is dangerous for the baby.

Baby is just 2 weeks old. Abeg, let it suck. Its better the baby is allowed to suck for long periods of time than breaking the time.
Let your wife be comfortable when she's breastfeeding, let her sleep when the babyvis also sleeping in the morning/afternoon etc. She may need extra help if possible, so you should help out too.

However, if SHE feels she can't cope anymore, I guess she could start with formula milk.

There are different types in the market, some for premature babies, some for children who are intolerant etc

Oga pls buy Formula milk for your boy. There are people that dont breastfeed at all and their babies turn out healthy and big during the 6 wks checks and quarterly checks.

Nigerians need to learn to put sentiments aside. We are talking about your baby's health here. That child is not satisfied hence sucking constantly. He isnt getting enough nutrients/food from the single source. Babies use alot of strength to suck and if your baby isnt getting enough food to recoup the strength, you may end up in hospital

Finally, the benefits of breastfeeding are enormous however, the main nutrients passed through breastmilk is the Colostrum ( the milk produced during the first few days of birth). The rest of the milk produced is just regular milk o

Bros nothing to worry, my baby is a month old, the same thing happened to me, in fact I actually bought baby food due to frustration as baby will suck all thru the night. What I did is to eat more of hot rice and pepper soup. This makes the breast produce more milk for the baby. Now he has reduce the feeding by himself. I think it can work for her too. Try and thank me later.

That intense feeding frenzy is Nature trying to help the baby. That is how Nature ensures the newborn infant survives and gets enough to eat. It's very natural and only mother's with over-supply issues won't experience the feeding frenzy.

Yomieluv, the milk baby is getting is not enough and the best way to make mother's body produce more milk is to suck a lot, so the milk glands communicate to the brain that the body needs to produce more milk. Which is why it stops after a while, because the body does so and the baby gets enough and doesn't need to suck as much to get a full meal. But here in Nigeria, we don't have lactation consultants to teach the theories behind Breastfeeding so we give the baby formula.

Breastmilk production is a supply-and-demand thing: the more the demand, the more the supply comes. Once you reduce the demand the supply drops.

Your baby may drink formula and then wake up at 4 months and flat out refuse it. And your wife will start all over again having to nurse till 6 months.

http://www.lalecheleague.org/nb/nbsepoct08p44.html

Sometimes I wish I could teach a Lactation class. But I would have to write the IBCLC exam for it (yes there is an International Board for Lactation around the world and strangely they don't exist in Nigeria but are in several countries. They grew and took over from traditional midwifery and traditional paeditric nursing assistant).

I used to prepare it myself then, even till now. You can get the soya beans in the market, especially from those selling grains/cereals.

Peel the soybeans, grind and cook, after cooling down, then, sieve the shafts to make it smooth.

For your baby, breastfeeding must continue o.

I wish you, your wife and the baby the best.

Soymilk is not safe for babies. Because people have given it and nothing happened to their child, they recommend it. It is NOT safe for babies and the way these things work is that 7 out of 10 babies will drink it and nothing will happen to them, but the last 3 will drink it and all sorts will happen. And you don't want your child to be amongst the last 3 (you won't know till it happens). Soymilk is not even as nutritious as other types of milk.
Soymilk is only allowed if your baby is allergic to fortified cow milk.

Everyone can tell you "it worked for me and no side effects", most people won't come and say "this is how my baby suffered".

@ Onegai, i am just hearing about soy milk not being safe for babies. I thought it was an alternative to cow milk especially if the baby is lactose intolerant. There are Soy based milks like ISOMIL, etc.

@Yomieluv, Some women don't just produce enough milk for the baby. My sister in law was same. Her baby was always sucking and he was loosing weight. After 2 weeks, she decided to express milk and see how much we was producing and it was less than 30ml combined. It was then she started mixed feeding and her baby started adding weight and didn't suck as much. One night that she ensured that she didn't breastfeed throughout and then expressed in the morning, all told was between 40 and 45ml.

Ask yourself this: what does weaning entail? Isn't it when you go long hours without nursing the baby, your milk reduces with time? So going long hours without breastfeeding to measure the amount of milk produced is counter-productive. Because your body will assume the baby slept through the night and doesn't need to eat so much, so will adjust milk production to reduce. If your SiL had pumped at night, she would have produced more milk the next day. You have to empty the breasts of milk so it produces more: if you don't, the body will assume whoever is drinking the milk doesn't need as much and reduce production. That is the same theory behind Weaning: don't feed baby as much, baby stops drinking and the body stops producing.

Exclusive Breastfeeding is hard. Baby E woke up one day and flat-out refused to drink 5 different brands od formula (she still hates it till today). It was either she starved or I worked on my milk supply.

I stated earlier, Soymilk is an alternative to Lactose Intolerant babies but its less nutritious than other milks. But no doctor will recommend it over formula if there is no reason to take it. And some mothers who gave it to their babies found out the hard way about Soy allergies (babies twisting and grunting and screaming after every meal till they were taking to the hospital).

We need to warn parents a lot and educate them. Even the pap that we add soybean, groundnut, crayfish and co to, it would have killed my niece. The first day she took groundnut was the first time we discovered she had a deadly Nut allergy and thank goodness for access to good healthcare. The good thing is that most kids outgrow their allergies.

I understand you but you have to pump out what was not sucked out before. Weaning is not an immediate process. It takes a while. So if you normally breastfeed at night and then you don't breastfeed that night, your boobs should be full before it starts reacting to less sucking at night. That's what usually happens to me. They will be like rocks.

You're correct. But most of us won't pump ( imagine having to pump at 2am, after a long day). Breastfeeding is hard.

I suggested it to her so that she can know how much milk she is giving him. Imagine when a baby is supposed to be on 60ml per feed, you can only produce 40ml for a total of about 3 feeds. I think some women have low supply whilst some have oversupply.

I knew a lady with oversupply so gangster, she used to donate it. She said her secret weapon was Stout beer.

Kids, don't try that at home grin alcohol poisoning is real.

Fenugreek, Mother's milk tea, pap and yes, small Stout are many ways to boost supply.

My boy is just 13days old.
I just told my mum about your complaint and the first question she asked was 'is the baby a boy?'

I told her 'yes', and she laughed long and hard.

Mum says it is normal for baby boys to suck like that. She says my younger brother sucked her to the extent she started experiencing dizzyness. She also added that your baby is going to be a big child, that's why he is sucking that way. Your wife can add formular after 4/5months, but until then your wife should breastfeed exclusively, says Mum.

She recommends your wife eat well and brace herself because the journey of a year plus is just starting grin

Ask your wife to express milk (if she's not already doing so) to measure how much milk she's producing per feed. If less than the recommended amount, then her milk production has to increase (a gradual process) or supplement with formula or local baby food. The main ish is for your child to get all needed nutrients.

When my sis had her baby, she didn't produce enough milk for the first 2 or 3 weeks. The baby was losing more weight than normal. When she expressed, the quantity was very small. The poor child was just sucking and sucking with very little coming out. So she constantly used electric pump and gave her child formula. After the milk production increased (overflowing sef), she stopped the formula and did exclusive for the next 6 months. She continued bf after 6months, but she introduced solids (in puree form).

@ Yomieluv, suggest to wiffie to supplement with formula (or local baby food) pending the time her milk production matches or exceeds ogas demand.

Point is, babies are different. Listen to your baby and body.

My baby eats like a ninja. And she's a girl. So maybe the 'it's a boy' reason isn't entirely true.

Yomieluv sorry. I had the same problem. My baby eats a lot ( even with over production) and when I added formula, she was picky about it. It takes perseverance. You and madam have to find out which formula she favors and combine it with breastfeeding.
Don't stop breastfeeding yet. It's great for their immune system. So let her keep trying. The more he feeds, the more the milk will come.

All the best.
