We read 'Oliver Twist' in JS1, 'The Sacrifice' in JS2. 'The Bottled Leopard' was a required text thru JS1-3. Truth be told, I found both very...I dunno, annoying. Oliver Twist always aired on NTA so I never was interested. Dr Lana Siwaju was a selfish prat and I hated his wife Moji for a long time. His mother hung herself and you couldn't even wait till her body cooled before you threw a pretentious party. Darned woman prostituted herself to see the fool through school and all of a sudden, because some wife said somewhere that she embarrasses her, you had to get her locked up in a psyche ward...Hian!!! Read a lot of the rest tho. Camara, Wa Thoing, Amadi, Ekwensi, Shakespeare (hated the drama). I loved Marriage of Anansewa tho. Darned trickster, the father. Always like our Nigerian tortoise. I read Forgotten Realms series now for favorites tho |

AFRICAN PROCE The Concubine-Elechi Amadi The African Child-Camara Laye AFRICAN PLAY The God's are not to Blame-Ola Rotimi The Lion and the Jewel-Wole Soyinka NON-AFRICAN PROCE Treasure Island-R.L Stevenson Animal Farm-George Orwell NON AFRICAN PLAY Macbeth-William Shakespeare She Stoops to Conquer-Oliver Goldsmith Now wait for this, you would have think it's only Literature we are studying then,we had a very disciplined literature teacher who made sure we study all these cover to cover. Including the poetries. AFRICAN POETRY Salute to the Elephant-A.Babalola Letter to Martha-Denice Brutus Nightfall in Soweto-Oswald Mtshali Building the Nation-Henry Ballow Stanley Meets Mutesa-David Rubadiri Night Rain-J.P Clarke NON AFRICAN POETRY An lrish Airman foresees his death-W.B Yeats Mending Wall-Robert Frost Futility-Wilreld Owen Richard Cory-Edwin A.Robinson Parables-(can't remember the poet) Ode to a Grecian urn-John Keats. LordofNairaland: It's Samankwe in the strange forest and it's not really about a madman... it's a boy who came late to school and when his teacher was flogging him for late coming he ran into the forest where he came across a lot of different people and strange things. |

But for nostalgia, those were actually shitty days. Started secondary school in the late 80s and here's my roll call. Lambtales from Shakespeare. Second chance by nyegi koin Adventures of Souza (this was one hilarious novel) Akin the Drummer Boy Without a Silver spoon Eze goes to school (read this in primary sch) But I have to admit, the writers of those days were really deep. Thank you Wole Soyinka et al. For the memories. 1 Like |
