CREDO NG TECH. SOLUTIONS
PRESENTS D.I.Y.
HOW TO SETUP AN INVERTER BACKUP

This tutorial is on how to setup an Inverter ( which lasts for 8hours long) with less than 20k (2016) is from the stable of ibelieve Tech solutions.
After so much questions that came up from my last thread (https://www.nairaland.com/3136308/lifepo4-battery-packs-cells-chargers) asking for what a LiFePO4 battery also known as LFP power packs which the most common one around is 40Ah ( there are others of 80Ah, 200Ah but not available in the Nigerian market, so if you decide to import, it's all up to you.)is used for. It's serves a lot of purpose ranging from:

● Serving as Laptop powerbank.

● Printer (especially 3 in 1 colour printers ) backup and use in remote areas.

●Powering low watt consumption DC devices like fans & other 12V compatible devices of all sorts.

● being used with an inverter or a UPS to act as backup

Here, I will be explaining how to use it with a UPS because we are trying to reduce cost.
A pure sinewave inverter costs some bucks which might need some planning before buying. At the moment we need something to use and we want to setup with a lesser Amount.

The following items are needed:

SETUP MATERIALS

● The LiFePO4 / LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery ( there are alot now in market as compared to 2016 but for this setup, we will use the
polymer packed 40AH rated 12V / 480WH)

● Any UPS either old or new (I dont advise you buy new because you can get a new chinese power inverter instead) ( the 650VA one preferably) APC is the best from my experience even though we used a blue gate make here.

● Connecting cables (12AWG multistrand) and connectors (the anderson connector comes with the battery but we can replace the connectors
with XT60 or XT90 connectors since they are very common around).
The above listed are the things (tools not included) needed and with a little form modification then you are good to go.

Firstly, let's breakdown the make up of the battery. It is mostly polymer packed (I.e comes with blue packing film wrapped round it) or other suitable covering. Here is a snapshot of the battery. They are all of the same power rating regardless of the dimensions.

would like to answer that at the end of the whole tutorial. pls bear with me

Here, I will be explaining the makeup of the battery in terms of its cables;

The one circled with blue is the Anderson clip ( Discharging port) while the one circled with gold is the XLR ( charging port) cable.

The Anderson is what you need to get the battery connected to your UPS .
New way, you can cut off the anderson connector on the battery and attach the XT60 connector since it is very common and cheap compared to Anderson powerpole connector

UPS Modification

Open the UPS casing, identify the wires attached to the internal battery and disconnect from the battery if present.
Bring it out and attached to another Anderson cable (The red and black) or XT60 connector.

Likewise trace the beeper and disconnect from the board, get a technician to do that if you cant alone

The next part is the modified UPS.

Ensure the ups supplies light prior Modification (either new or old ) just ensure it still supplies light. that's what we need from it.

Cons of using the UPS .

It hums and gets hot on much loading .
Trips off sometimes while using and an appliance that surges is connected. E.g Television.
There may be a need to wire an external fan sometimes for those that require long hours of use.

From experience, it is better to opt for the chinese ordinary power inverters, it eliminates some of the challenges above. We have different power ratings : 300watts, 500watts & 1000watts.
Suoer brand has performed well over time.

N.B:
If we are using any other battery apart from lithium battery, you can buy the brand that has charging. The 1000watts comes with 10A charging which is not that bad for charging lead acid batteries from 100AH downwards.

The next stage is connecting the LFP battery to the modified UPS shown above / our ordinary chinese inverter

The Anderson clip is designed to fit into another. Red to red and black to black Likewise th XT60 / XT90 connector

Then you put on the the UPS / our ordinary chinese invert

KABOOM!!! LIGHT COMES UP

Charging the LFP battery.

●The UPS can charge the battery but it charges very slowly using that same discharging port. ( it does not charge it at the required voltage range
and needed current) but works in the absence of nothing.

● The best option that charges well is the LiFePO4 charger made by SAKO and also the Lithium battery chargers with the required voltage range
of 14.4V -14.6V with set current of 5A. It can tolerate further but this time, the manufacturers specified this.

SOLAR CHARGING

Charge controller of 10 - 20 Amps is okay. If you are planning for the future, you can buy a bigger one, no harm
Using a pwm solar charge controller, find a lithium compatible one ( it will be included as a part of the profiles available)
If it has custom settings, you can adjust the voltage around 14.4V -14.6V. Epever has a pwm with support, likewise chinese versions. Aka
toys. Have seen one before but not tested it effectiveness.
Using an MPPT, most of them have custom settings. This makes it better. E.g makeskyblue, epever tracer series, Fangpusun...

Solar panel: 80W - 150 watts panel are okay to use. either mono or poly crystalline.

● the charging cable is the one previously circled with gold colour.
Most times the charger comes with the battery and which saves the stress. If fully charged, it lasts for 6 hours + and more depending on
LOAD connected to the inverter or Modified UPS.

Mentioned in some posts above is the picture of the SAKO charger and the second is a Generic Lithium Charger which can be sourced locally or internationally.

That's all about the setup using UPS and ordinary chinese inverter

(There are other two methods: 2016). They have been touched now

Opportunity to ask questions is open to all.

One question that comes up in our mind is, How durable is this Setup

Have been using this method for more than a year (2015 -2020) now which shows the battery & method. Have had cause to change batteries and recondition some by replacing spoilt cells
It has a discharge cycle of 2000 plus.

Another question that stems up is, What are the things it can power?

it's always good to make use of energy saving appliances.
it powers the likes of:
1.Tv and decoder-Dstv,star times,Gotv and the likes( both Box and Led TV) As for the LED TV it's last 6hours long. this has been tested severally. Also home theatre system
2. Laptops and mobile gadgets
3. Standing and wall fans
4.Energy saving bulbs. etc with this it can last for several days
5. Blender when using the ordinary Chinese inverter (used severally with the 1kva version times without number but with care not long hours)
Except for likes of: blender (when using the battery with the modified UPS), heater, iron
Thanks a bunch
Am open to questions 24/7

Here is the Price list of the items required for the setup :
LiFePO4 battery with Charger: 13,000,
Used UPS- 3,000
And the Anderson cable -1500 or less because it's a little bit. scarce.
Total-17,500.

The above was the quotation far back in 2016

Nice one OP. I commend you for your effort in trying to be very elaborate and explicit in your tutorial. I hv some few words to add. I have been using this setup for abt 4 to 5 years nw in contrast to your 1 year usage duration. I want to acknowledge that it is very reliable and works well. However you only mentioned the good aspect. I think it's only proper you talk about some disadvantages or problems associated with the setup.
