Make I join una small.

He lost 800 naira after giving the buyer change. He gave John 1000 naira, meaning he lost it also. Me thinks he lost 1800 naira #myopinionthough#

To be frank....the shopkeeper lost 2000 naira...1000 on both ends...1000 to customer(yorme),200 naira worth of good and 800 naira change; 1000 to "Jon snow" the other shopkeeper...
But we'll never know for sure until yorme turns up and confess!! grin

Ya high oh!

Back to the question, the answer should be #1,800.

The buyer left with original #800, and the shopkeeper (who happened to be carried away with d lady's good look n shape. I sure say na Iyke!) returned original #1000 to John, his neighbour.

The #200, which happened to be the fee of the product bought, isn't a loss coz it's a portion of the 5 original #200 notes the shop owner exchanged his counterfeit #1000 note for.

The answer is N1000!!!

************
What we are talking abt is the money the SHOPKEEPER(not john nor the buyer ) lost due to the counterfeit money(not [s]cos of income or loss he do made anytime he sells of buys[/s] ).

He has done his business with the buyer and they owe not eachother.
The buyer has his good,
The shopkeeper has his money(the 1000; ie the 200 he sold his product and the 800 he had before which he gave to the buyer as change for collecting 1000 over a 200 worth of good).

He discovers that the 1000 the buyer gave him is fake (now this is where the problem was).

The exchange he had with John means nothing, it is just like exchanging a white chair with another person for a blue chair.....
he still has his chair, same with John.

He had to destroy the 1000 cos it was fake and that was what he lost!!!.

The just included John in the story to confuse gurus

Your answer is 2000

1. The buyer gave the seller 1000
2. He bought an item worth 200, and his change should be 800
3. The shopkeeper goes to john and exchanges 1000(john gave him 1000 in 200 denomination) and gives the buyer 800 and keeps 200 as payment for the item
4. John returns the counterfeit money and demands for 1000 which he was give.

Therefore
The shopkeeper lost 1000 which he gave to john(payment for counterfeit) + 800 he gave the buyer as change + 200( the worth of the item bought by the buyer with counterfeit money)

Yea... Kinda. But the only money lost here is the 1000 given to the customer, which was given to her by the shopkeeper's neighbour and which was replaced by the shopkeeper who has already collected 200 from the 1000 that John (the neighbour) gave to him b4 he gave 800 to the customer.
No be small thing. #My_opinion_tHo#
I disagree, the customer already went away with #1000,the counterfeit money which was replaced is for what?that's the end of it,you can't spend it again,so whose loss?the customer or the retailer?
I insist that the answer is #2000.

This looks easy but it is not because everyone will arrive at a different answer…

A lady bought goods worth ₦200 and paid the
shopkeeper with a ₦1000 Note.

The Shopkeeper had no change on him so he
went to another Shopkeeper John his neighbour and collected ₦1000 change in ₦200 denominations, with which he settled the lady and she left.

A little while later, John came back angrily after
he discovered the ₦1000 note he was given by the shopkeeper was fake, and demanded a replacement.

To avoid trouble, the shopkeeper had to give John another ₦1000 and destroyed the counterfeit which had no real value.

So Question for the geniuses…
How much has the Shopkeeper lost in total?

A. ₦1200

B. ₦2000

C. ₦1000

D. ₦1800

E. ₦2200
Abeg make una help me anwer o

Mathematically

In the initial stage let's assume
Money from the buyer is x=1000
Money from john is y = 1000
Change given to buyer is c=800
Value for item sold is b=200

1. Buyer comes to buy with x= 1000
2. Seller exchanges x for y which still makes it =1000
3. Change is given to buyer c = 800
4.value for the item sold b = 200.

In a normal transaction the buyer gained b =200
But since john discovered that the money from the the buyer was counterfeit x= -1000
Note that since the buyer came with counterfeit
c= -800, b= -200, the exchange automatically becomes borrow. So the shopkeeper borrowed 1000 to dash the buyer(800+200 worth of item) and later John came for his money and is given 1000 and that removes him from the equation.

Now the shopkeeper has lost c=-800, b=-200(which he dashed the buyer grin) and the counterfeit he's holding x=-1000. Remember the counterfeit is not (0,zero) but (-1000)
Sum all and you get -2000
