Was driving back from work today,i decided to pass this route home just to prove to some doubters that said street hawking is not allowed in US. Saw a thread some days ago on front page in which a Twitter handler posted a picture of a guy hawking in " The bronx".Many people said it was not real just to support Ambode banning street hawking. In as much the governor is trying to protect the life of this hawkers by banning and enforcing the KAI to arrest any hawker, what plan does he have for this people? These are men and women who get their daily living from this street hustle, many of them were ones shop owners but due to demolition of their shop by this same government, they could not raise fund to get another shop, and rather involving in armed robbery they decided to hustle on the street. Some of this people are victim of fire,so many cases we have read about how fire razed shops either from fallen petrol tankers or high power voltage from PHCN. Some of this guys are graduate, school drop out or artisan who migrated from other states of the country looking for greener pasture in Lagos while some are lagosians who need to make a leaving from the street for survival. I advice the honorable governor to endeavor to make this banning flexible and not total banning.Apart from this affecting street hustlers,it will also affect the buyers too, their won't be easy access to get the usual gala, bottle water, lacasera, pure water, bottle coke ,Pepsi and many more they do buy on the road.Imagine driving back from work and facing a very long traffic, with your usual way,you look arround to buy your usual chilled bottle water and gala just to step down as you drive home slowly or you are in a commuter bus in the traffic in which the heat catching you is like you are feeling hell fire on earth, you need a cold pure water to chill your spine and could not see anyone to sell for you. A good Government makes policy that favor is citizens and not punish them,if Ambode must ban street hawking, what alternative plan does he have for this people? How many jobs has he created for them to do? Does he want them to become miscreants, pick pockets or armed robbers? Same way he has banned street hawking, can he ban street or road political campaign too. From an Ex - Street Hawker. Cc lalasticlala seun Justwise

Are you trying to compare this to Lagos?..in supporting the point you are trying to make...and the other thread...can't you show us multiple hawkers in one shot?...and why only water they all sell?...is that all Americans drink? ...don't they eat as well? You talk about being stuck in traffic.....did it ever cross your mind that the hawkers are a major reason of the traffic jams? Would you support in the name of making an honest living people bringing cows or furniture to sell on the street? Every major city has hawkers....street vendors... but it is regulated by law....and enforced. Lagos has same on books...but only now being enforced. The message is clear....the streets of Lagos is no longer a free for all....where you can leave your state or little village or wherever and make the streets of Lagos your place of business. Too bad if in life people have but two choices to make a living....sell in the streets ...or be a criminal. Either choice means you are ready to face prison. 2 Likes |

A Originalsly: So they are the ones who deprive the government from constructing a good road that will last long? Lagos should be free for all,but laws of the land must be obeyed. In as much as that,a good government should think of suppressing the poverty in people and oppressing the people leaving poverty. This statement shows you have not been there or close to what it takes to hustle on the street. |

Originalsly: Like there are no Lagosians hawking on the streets of Lagos. What about the agberos that collect N20 from hard working drivers and conductors who left their state to come to Lagos to hustle? What do they do with the money? Your comment is myopic at best 1 Like |

hahn: Thank you for this comment, just look at Lagos he want to turn to mega city full of "agberos" but he dare not ban them despite these people are one of the major causes of traffic, they exploit commuters by force, fight and even sometimes beat up law enforcement officers, why is he turning a blind eye to them? 1 Like |

signature2012: The money agberos make go to the unions and then to the government's pocket. I am certain those funds are unaccounted for even though they run into billions yearly. It is the best "chop and clean mouth" system any government has ever come up with 1 Like |

signature2012:FYI....I have hustled on the streets...but that doesn't make it right. You said the laws of the land must be obeyed...this one is now being enforced and you are complaining. Is about time the chaos end and some amount of order restored.... let's breathe some fresh air...free from the stench of so many pissing and shh.ting wherever they choose to. |
