alstacs:It's quite thoughtful of you to go out of your way to help your friend get the best results, I don't quite subscribe to the idea of "just do what it says" ... especially considering the fact that the owner is a friend and the modification is a non structural one. As long as he is consulted; and it is done with his express approval. ....@bolded he clearly just wants what is "best" and has no particularly rigid choice. The plan could be 50 yrs old for all you know. Even very complex detail in existing plans could be altered as improvement, let alone wardrobe design. In my opinion, the stand alone closets provide more flexibility, with regards to repositioning and design, especially building for personal habitation, if the extra cost is no problem. I'm sure almost every experienced builder here has at one point or the other made recommendations to a client about some modifications to original plans, for which the client had reason to thank them in the end. All the best. |

Poured concrete pillar vs Block pillar for fencing What are the advantages/disadvantages of both? I've been looking on the site at how fences are constructed and saw both methods being used without documented reasoning. Your replies are much appreciated. |

msogunro: I did block pillars. Concrete pillars will be stronger of course and required in areas with bad soils like Lekki and Ikorodu. One thing I wished I did was sandwiching two blocks to make a pillar. Love the look and will retrofit later. 1 Like |

I am currently redoing my fence pillars, and one consideration is the gate. I find that poured concrete especially hanging the gate at thesame time would likely be much stronger than using blocks. If i had my way, blocks is cheaper and quicker, what i just know is that it may not last in my own case. msogunro: |

EgunMogaji: Do you mean like the image below? Pulled from this discussion - https://www.nairaland.com/716689/fences-gates-pictures-prices/6 Did you use 6" or 9" block for your fence?

Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Nobody: 2:52pm On Jul 08, 2016 |
msogunro: Yes, exactly like that. I used 6" blocks because I was fencing 100 X 125" plot. Hajj has used 6" and Spyder880 too, just as reference. |

msogunro: You're welcome. If you're building in Ibadan and not inside an established estate, DO NOT leave the land fallow without fencing and gating it. The omo oniles in Ibadan are the very sons of anarchy This is what I'm going through right now, some asshat surfaced and said his father owns 10 acres there including my land. Now, this is with fence and house. Imagine if there was no fence, then I would return to find a structure on my land. This repeats itself all over Ibadan. Oh, how I wish this happened in the US.

EgunMogaji: I was told upfront that I will deal with hoodlums of a different type. Not omo oniles, but those asking for prayer money. The owner of the land lives, literally, a stone throw away from my land. He said a few bottles of booze and they will leave. We'll see... Clearing of the land is imminent and fencing will begin immediately after. 1 Like |

Egun I have not stepped into Ibadan in just over 20 years, the Ibadan I know used to be a peaceful place, in fact it was a weekend relaxation from the hustle and bustle of Lagos. The areas i know are around Bodija Olorunshogo Ring road So are you saying that they have opened eye like Lagos counterparts now, as in the Omoniles, what will happen if one deploys members of squadron 25 Obalende Barracks or Operation MESA ? Mr. Tevanso, your sales tactics are a bit aggressive Sir. There are few notable builders on here that their work speaks for them and they never solicit. Showcase your builds from start and especially to finish. If you don't have stuff under your belt, then partner with those that do. Consider this a constructive criticism. 1 Like |

Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by abdulwastecx(m): 6:13pm On Jul 08, 2016 |
msogunro: Block pillars are more cost effective than concrete pillars of the same dimensions and standard mix (say M15 concrete strength). For six inches block fence, I prefer block pillars of section 450 x 450mm, filled with with concrete. With configuration like in the sketch below. 1 Like

abdulwastecx: I see. So, no gap in the fencing for block pillars. One continous fence with blocks on both side every 10ft or so to create the pillar. Does that correctly describe it? |
