i speak isoko. and its very different from urhobo on my perception, honestly i have tried to listen to urhobo people talking but i cant understand them. if you break down the words they sound similar or look same but truth is they are different. what about the people of epie/atissa in yenagoa. their language has lots of isoko in it mixed with ijaw.i even understand them a lot when they speak because they use words that exactly the same as isoko most times. that does not mean they are ijaw or isoko. they can claim what they want to be called.

the op did not mention there are isoko people too that are from bayelsa state. yes we have lands that are in sagbama local govt.

Am from Isoko (Iyede)....don't say what you don't know you don't say, we are not urhobos, there is a big difference, it's like telling an agbor man he's an igbo man, I lived all my life in an urhobo land, but in my home we speak Isoko, I hear both languages, there are similarities no argument, but if I talk to urhobo peeps with Isoko, they don't hear a thing rather they then to pick words from my sentence and sometimes get it wrong, So when you are not from either of these tribes and you come here to say they are the same, it annoying because my Isoko friends don't hear Urhobo, if I may ask you all that say they are the same....why can't they speak both languages or hear each other??

You right, am an Isoko; I only pick up Urhobo very slightly, but I can bet that, someone can sell me using the Urhobo language right in front of me.

I think, the Urhobos are worst off in understanding Isoko.

One thing the OP missed is that, there are many dialects of Isoko and Urhobo. Isoko was never part of Urhobo, the similar looking dialects only means, they must have migrated from similar or close origins, which everyone agrees is Bini.

In the case of a man who doesn't have any ties with isoko, he gave birth to all his children in lagos, doesn't speak isoko, doesn't own a house both in lagos or isoko.
If such a man dies, where would he be buried?
Would custom demand his corpse taken back to isoko or would he be buried in a cemetery? or since he doesn't own a property, would his children be demanded to build a new house in isoko before he can be buried?

The person in question must have relatives and a family compound, he can be buried there, there is no law in Isoko land that states that one must be a house before he can be buried.

Isoko were once urhobo

The truth is that I am of the opinion that isoko is a dialect of Urhobo. Although isoko is more of a proto-edoid language than urhobo. Both languages evolved from Edo and of the two of them, isoko is closer to Edo than urhobo which proves the theory that isoko might be older than urhobo. Other than that, the languages are the same. It's just that the intonation of isoko is different from that of Urhobo and that makes isoko more musical. Isokos also repeat a lot. Some words are also different while others are mainly variants in terms of pronunciation.
I.e. Urhobo will say Yanrobone meaning come here whilst Isokos will say Yanzobone Yanzobone
Notice the deliberate repetition and minor variation. Linguistically, the languages are exactly like what you described earlier.

Culturally, isoko & urhobo are virtually the same. They believe in the same concept of life, they have the same religions, philosophy, world view, songs, etc. They are just a faction of Urhobo just like the Okpes and Uvwies. Furthermore, isoko has common myths with urhobo and can perfectly hear urhobo. Urhobos maybe able to hear isoko with a little focus. But because of political reasons, the Isokos deemed it fit that they have their autonomy as an ethno-linguistic group. This was granted them in the 50s but I don't think it is to their favor because they are the smallest minority now in Delta State and have just 2 LGAs. If they had been with the Urhobos, perhaps they would have fared better. Perhaps... The judgment is thus simple; Isokos are politically seen as a distinct group whereas they are culturally & linguistically the same with Urhobos.
