FOOD FOR THOUGHT. #COPIED... Nigeria Exports Religion, India Exports Cars By Azuka Onwuka The biggest country in Africa that the United Kingdom colonized is Nigeria. The biggest country that the United Kingdom colonized in Asia is India (which then comprised the present Pakistan and Bangladesh). When the UK came into Nigeria and India, like all other countries they colonized, they brought along their technology, religion (Christianity), and culture: names, dressing, food, language, etc. Try as hard as the British did, India rejected the British religion, names, dressing, food, and even language, but they did not reject the British technology. Today, 80.5 per cent of Indians are Hindus; 13.4 per cent Muslims; 2.3 per cent Christians; 1.9 per cent Sikhs; 0.8 per cent Buddhists, etc. Hindi is the official language of the government of India, but English is used extensively in business and administration and has the status of a “subsidiary official language.” It is rare to find an Indian with an English name or dressed in suit. On the other hand, Nigeria embraced, to a large extent, the British religion, British culture – names, dressing, foods, and language – but rejected the British technology. The difference between the Nigerian and the Indian experiences is that while India is proud of its heritage, Nigeria takes little pride in its heritage, a situation that has affected the nationalism of Nigerians and our development as a nation. Before the advent of Christianity, the Arabs had brought Islam into Nigeria through the North. Islam also wiped away much of the culture of Northern Nigeria. Today, the North has only Sharia Courts but no Customary Courts. So from the North to the South of Nigeria, the Western World and the Eastern World have shaped our lives to be like theirs and we have lost much or all of our identity. Long after the British and Arabs left Nigeria, Nigeria has waxed strong in religion to the extent that Nigerians now set up religious branches of their home-grown churches in Europe, the Americas, Asia and other African countries. Just like the Whites brought the gospel to us, Nigerians now take the gospel back to the Whites. In Islam, we are also very vibrant to the extent that if there is a blasphemous comment against Islam in Denmark or the US, even if there is no violent reaction in Saudi Arabia – the Islamic headquarters of the world – there will be loss of lives and destruction of property in Nigeria. If the United Arab Emirates, a country with 75 per cent Muslims, is erecting the tallest building in the world and encouraging the world to come and invest in its country by providing a friendly environment, Boko Haram ensures that the economy of the North (and by extension that of Nigeria) is crippled with bombs and bullets unless every Nigerian converts to Boko Haram’s brand of Islam. We are indeed a very religious people. Meanwhile, while we are building the biggest churches and mosques, the Indians, South Africans, Chinese, Europeans and Americans have taken over our key markets: telecoms, satellite TV, multinationals, banking, oil and gas, automobile, aviation, shopping malls, hospitality, etc. Ironically, despite our exploits in religion, we are a people with little godliness, a people without scruples. It is rare to do business with a Nigerian pastor, deacon, knight, elder, Brother, Sister, imam, mullah, mallam, alhaji or alhaja without the person laying landmines of bribes and deception on your path. We call it PR, facilitation fee, processing fee, transport money, financial engineering, deal, or whatever. But if it does not change hands, nothing gets done. And when it is amassed, we say it is “God’s blessings.” Some people assume that sleaze is a problem of public functionaries, but the private sector seems to be worse than the public sector these days. One would have assumed that the more churches and mosques that spring up in every nook and cranny of Nigeria, the higher the morals in our society. But it is not so. The situation is that the more religious we get, the baser we become. Our land never knew the type of bloodshed experienced from religious extremists, political desperadoes, ritual killers, armed robbers, kidnappers, internet scammers, university cultists, and lynch mobs. Life has become so cheap and brutish that everyday seems to be a bonanza. We import the petroleum that we have in abundance, rice and beans that our land can produce in abundance, and even toothpicks that primary school children can produce with little or no effort. Yet we drive the best of cars and live in the best of edifices, visit the best places in the world for holidays and use the most expensive electronic and telecoms gadgets. It is now a sign of poverty for a Nigerian to ride a saloon car. Four-wheel drive is it! Even government officials, who were known to use only Peugeot cars as official cars as a sign of modesty, have upgraded to Toyota Prado, without any iota of shame, in a country where about 70 per cent live below poverty. Private jets have become as common as cars. A nation that imports toothpicks and pins flaunts wealth and wallows in ostentation at a time its children are trooping to Ghana, South Africa and the UK for university education and its sick people are running to India for treatment. India produces automobile and exports it to the world. India’s medical care is second to none, with even Americans and Europeans travelling to the country for medical treatment. India has joined the nuclear powers. India has launched a successful mission to the moon. Yet bicycles and tricycles are common sights in India. But in Nigeria, only the wretched of the earth ride bicycles. I have intentionally chosen to compare Nigeria with India rather than China, South Korea, Brazil, Malaysia, or Singapore, because of the similarities between India and Nigeria. But these countries were not as promising as Nigeria at the time of our independence. Some would say that our undoing is our size: the 2012 United Nations estimate puts Nigeria’s population at 166,000 million, while India has a population of 1.2 billion. Some would blame it on the multiplicity of ethnic groups: we have 250 ethnic groups; India has more than two thousand ethnic groups. Some would hang it on the diversity in religion: we have two major religions – Christianity and Islam; but India has many. Some would say it is because we are young as an independent nation: we have 52 years of independence; India has 65 years, while apartheid ended in South Africa only in 1994. I am a Christian, and nothing can change me from Christianity. But I think that our country is daily sinking into religiosity to the detriment of godliness. Our land is sick and needs healing. “If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land” is still a saying that is germane to our current situation. We need more godliness than religion; more work and less of hope; and more action and less of words. Let everyone tidy up his or her corner first and demand fervently that our leaders tidy their areas of governance. Our nation is degenerating at a fast pace and we need to save it now 7 Likes 3 Shares |

WaleGent:Unfortunately, the OP suffers from the same mentality that has kept us backward... refusal to change in the face of facts. India also exports its religion. And so does China. You might even be unable to sketch the map of these countries if you're asked to. Their identity goes beyond their geographical space. Their identity is rooted in their culture, their history, their people. If I ask you to sketch Africa, you'll happily sketch it. That's all you are, a geographical space that contributes nothing. Just there to be there. Ordinary power you no get with all your prayer warriors. They have their heroes, their stories, and they teach the same to their kids. They don't teach their kids to go to Jerusalem or Mecca to meet the Gods of their slavemasters. They don't grow their kids on Bible verses, and the love letters of Paul to the Hebrews and Corinthians. Wetin concern African man concern David and Goliath? Or the Abrahamic children of violence, Isaac and Ishmael? As long as the AFRICAN continues to believe that his salvation was won for him on the cross of Calvary, he will continue to wallow in ignorance. Train your kids to focus on heaven, while others shoot satellite go Mars and Moon. 7 Likes 3 Shares |

Henry240: I dont know if by "made in Nigeria" you actually meant 'Assembled in Nigeria'? Because you and I know that we cant even make tyre in this country. No one in this Nigeria can make a bicycle from locally sourced or fabricated parts (even 20% locally sourced parts). All the keke Napep are imported. So what are you talking about? Please let's leave false pride and dignity and come down to earth. 7 Likes |

sonOfLucifer: The article is completely ridiculous. The article failed to point out that 68% of Indians live on the poverty line, earning $2 a day. The article also fails to mention that India has the world's largest number of people with no basic toilets. The article also fails to mention that businesses in India also have to depend on diesel generators to power their businesses. The article fails to mention that India has one of the most polluted air. The article fails to mention that South-Africa has the world's worst inequality co-efficient. With only 8% of the population controlling 80% of the land. The article fails to mention that the South-African economy has been growing by 0.6% in the past year, they are in a recession. The article fails to mention that 3 South-African cities are in the world's list of top 10 murder cities. The article fails to mention that South-Africa scores dead last in Maths and English, with students only requiring to make 33% to pass out of secondary school. I'm sorry, I've lots of similar articles written by multiple ignorant Nigerians who has simply failed to carry out the most basic research. 1 Like 1 Share |

holocron: Your just as completely hopeless as the O.P and as foolish as the writer of that article. There are two parts of the Auto-Industy, there are Vehicle Assemblers (Toyota, Nissan, BMW, OPEL, GMC, Innoson etc etc) and there are those who are referred to as Vehicle Component Manufacturers. No Vehicle company on earth builds all the components of their vehicles by themselves, they all order for parts from Vehicle Component Manufacturers you dunce! |

Have not seen or heard of where common bicycle is produce in Nigeria come talk of Big Keke Marwa that is on almost every street in Nigeria. Henry240: It is you who is an illiterate! You are so ignorant that you are comparing car manufacturing in India and that of Nigeria. In 2015, India produced more than 4 million cars from the scratch, while Nigeria assembled less than 3,000 car. Most of the cars in Nigeria are used and mostly vehicle that has been considered irreparable from the countries they were shipped from. The few new ones are shipped in from overseas, many of which comes from India. 4 Likes |

Henry240: What is your problem? You are like many ignorant Nigerians who doesn't understand how poor Nigeria is and will also fail to learn. You need to stop lying to feel better too. Percentage of population living below poverty Nigeria 70% (2010 est.) India 29.8% (2010 est.) https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/fields/2046.html I have been to India, I was in a city called Bangalore and i spent 4 months there. Throughout my stay, there was no power outage even for a day, I won't say that for any city in Nigeria. Manufacturing in Nigerian is almost non-existence, our education is stuck in the 60's and there is no plan to do anything about it. 4 Likes |

Henry240: I can see you lack home training and also very ignorant. The article says, "Nigeria Exports Religion, India Exports Cars" which is very right. In 2014, Indian export cars worth $14 billions, more than $500 millions of that were imported by Nigerians. Can you please tell me how many cars were exported from your 'lot of companies who produce cars in Nigeria'? Indian exports for automobiles were $14.5 billion in 2014. The 10 countries below imported 47.8% of that total. 1. United States: $1.2 billion (8.4%) 2. Mexico: $1 billion (6.9%) 3. South Africa: $888.8 million (6.1%) 4. United Kingdom: $637.4 million (4.4%) 5. Sri Lanka: $596.9 million (4.1%) 6. Bangladesh: $592.1 million (4.1%) 7. Turkey: $580.4 million (4%) 8. Nigeria: $546.8 million (3.8%) 9. Henry240: henry240 i expected better knowledge from you, you being a defense enthusiast should know to base ur info on verifiable facts and data , i am disappointed at your mis-information. http://povertydata.worldbank.org/poverty/country/IND go though the link, it is of world bank , the data is of 2011 it says 21.3% of Indians live on the poverty line as of 2011. as of 2015 India's poverty rate has fallen to 12.4%. but still figures are open to interpretations , depending on respective countries and international norms . the thing about toilets is very simple, in rural india people have different approach to toilets, they build toilets away from the houses where ladies go and men go the fields where it acts as manure . ORGANIC FARMING lol go to china vietnam cambodia u will see. 5-10 million toilets built attached to homes in villages by govt. , but all turned into cattle sheds , goat shed , storage area etc. lol different countries different way of life i guess. that businesses in India also have to depend on diesel generators to power their businesses. lol who told you that, i have worked in eletrical generation , u have peak voltage period where the current demand is high, so during this period certain non priority areas suffer black out for 1 hour max most of time. so as back up u have to use generator. this happens in summers only when load is too high during peak hours. India exports excess electricity to Bangladesh , pakistan was also asking but refused. The utility electricity sector in India had an installed capacity of 303 GW as of 30 June 2016 The gross electricity generated by utilities is 1,106 TWh (1,106,000 GWh) and 166 TWh by captive power plants during the 2014–15 fiscal. The gross electricity generation includes auxiliary power consumption of power generation plants. India became the world's third largest producer of electricity in the year 2013 with 4.8% global share in electricity generation surpassing Japan and Russia Renewable Power plants constituted 28% of total installed capacity and Non-Renewable Power Plants constituted the remaining 72%. air and solid waste pollution is a headache i agree to that. also india has truck loads of problems like every other country , like us china russia etc, the important thing is to constantly improve and not stagnate . no country is perfect. a country is as good as its citizen and is its mirror image /reflection . asala1: @asala1 and @WaleGent ogas i feel you, i like ur honest effort i was in germany when i felt the same wished my country was like germany, but now i dont wish it. germany a lost cause now. thing is my country good or bad provided my country makes progress every day in everything together with its citizens. best of luck PS: dont use india for comparison use china then u will have a easier time with the readers/posters. 1 Like |

Henry240: companies like Toyota, Nissan, BMW, OPEL, GMC are total solutions provider not simply Vehicle Assemblers they are completely independent from design stage to final production stage. for economics of scale , and risk mitigation etc they outsource the production of transmission and power train components, engines and engine parts, and metal stamping of body parts and trim. Other products include electrical and electronic equipment, seating and interior trim , brake systems , and steering and suspension components , as well as air conditioning systems and carburetors, pistons, and valves. all the design and development and prototyping and testing of majority and all of these critical sub systems is done by the parent company (Toyota, Nissan, BMW, OPEL, GMC) before being sent to the Automobile Parts Manufacturing Industry (oem) / vehicle Component Manufacturers (oem) for production. also the no of components being outsourced will vary from company to company depending on their respective no of subsidiary companies manufacturing various auto parts. in reality Vehicle Assemblers simply import auto parts in complete knock-down (CKD), semi-knocked-down (SKD) form and assemble them. and as explained above Vehicle Component Manufacturers OEM simply manufactures parts according to customer automobile manufacturing giants (Toyota, Nissan, BMW, OPEL, GMC) specification , design and standard. 1 Like |

nemesis2u: My response to the article and the O.P was simply to destroy a poorly thought out argument which is intended to portray Nigeria from the word, go, in a bad-light and not to compare with India. No matter the challenges we have in Nigeria, we still have made tremendous progress since independence. When the British left Nigeria in 1960, only 5% of the entire population of Nigeria at that time was educated, today the figure shows over 68% of Nigerians receiving at-least a secondary school education. If this isn't progress, then i simply do not know what progress is. The author intends to destroy the image of Nigeria while looking good in his folly. The Article's headline claims Nigeria only exports religion while India exports cars, from the sources and photos i've provided, the Authors claim has been proven to be a life. We don't only export Cars, we also export Vessels and parts thereof. |
