I Can Code In 75 Languages!!! by Nobody: 4:57pm On Jul 14, 2016
Of course this is not true, and never one of my dreams.

This is a callout to programmers that are always bragging about the number of languages they can code in.

The simple truth is this - it is better to master languages than to just troll around in all of them anyhow.

As for me, it is true that I can code in over 15 languages (with different levels of proficiency), but I can only claim expert in javaScript, PHP and JAVA - so in my real CV, i will just slash that 15/5=3 and say I can do 3 languages (fair enough eh?).

But you know what, all that does not matter at all, whether you can code in 1 language or 1 million languages - what matters is productivity.

So whenever I see a programmer boasting of great coding skills and all that, I am never impressed, I am only impressed by what I see.

That is why I will always rate people like Boomshasha (sorry, i cant pronounce the name well) for creating something like http://www.gdevit.com/ - this is a great wakeup call for me, and gdevit has triggered me to complete my own Nairaland (which is still under development - although the old deprecated version is still available on www.Nairaland.com but that will change in a very short time)

There are some very outstanding web apps that were developed by some nairalanders too - I have met many Nairalanders offline too. But i dont want to discuss their work here without their express permission.

So based on my criteria, the gdevit developer has done an outstanding job and I shall always rate him/her above many self-acclaimed chest-beaters on this board.

Okay, that having been said, where are the wailers?

It ain't easy... Requires a lot of hard work. Only Java is a handful. Not to even mention the numerous frameworks one must b conversant in to stand a chance in earning jobs... Funny tin is I just learn to build apps and try to master the procedures for specific apps.. Hardly beat my chest saying I program... But when I go out... I see a lot of stack overflow hounds who don't even know what a switch statement does nd I console myself.... Killer programmers are out there though...

Am not impressed by what I see a person has done. Not with all the free apps out there available for one to customize and claim ownership of. And definitely not with many brilliant coders lacking GUI skills. Yes; A coder should not have to be GUI design genius.

what I look at are:

1. The neatness of code (does it have comments? is it well tabbed and spaced?).

2. The structure and architecture: Are related classes placed in the same folders? Are there irrelevant classes? If I add a module to this app, will I have to change everything else? Does a method perform only one function or several functions?

3. What are the unique things this app does? Is it basic crude operations (under which circumstances I will think you are good), or does it bring new breath taking algorithms which handle data with so much dexterity one thinks there is a human brain in there. (under which circumstances I will think you are super dope)? Programming is an art. Doing stuff that works is okay. Doing stuff that marvels is ....cool.

Finally, how much of this code did you actually write? It is definitely okay to use someone else's code, after all, the best code is no code at all (learnt that from Code Complete), but you shouldn't take credit for another person's work by posing as though you wrote it.

As for languages, the problem I have with people who claim to know several languages is that they dont even know those languages. You know C# right? If you were given only notepad, would you be able to write a medium-level c# app... like say...a windows form? What about those that claim to know PHP? could you install your own PHP (not lamp stack) and configure your simple notepad scripts to run php? Do you know how that language works? Do you know its founding philosophy and WHEN NOT TO USE IT?

If you could do all these in all the languages you claim to know, you'd definitely know computers deeply enough to justify your claims to bragging rights. But most of these guys only know one language. Some dont even know any at all.

No, I am not retaliating against anyone. But i have been seeing a lot fumbling on this board of recent times.
The Larisoft dude is a true programmer, and he has proven himself to me - this thread is not about him.

I am just trying to encourage programmers generally to be more productive, and stop jumping about from language to language.

And whatever language they use, they should be productive with it - because that is what matters in the end.

Yep.. We all know it is productivity that matters at the end
But you know very well that no language is an island of itself..No language has all everything ... They need each other to achieve utmost functionality
For example let me focus on my field , if you are developing a page with PHP, you will need other languages like Ajax , jquery and html5 to get a beautiful dynamic page...Only PHP can't do the job

Languages need each other , for me a good programmer should be able to combine different languages to give a good productivity

You must not be a master Of all languages but atleast you should know a little bit what each entails and how to apply certain functionality in them when you encounter a problem while programming . This is called "A modern and dynamic programmer "

This our internet age is fast evolving .. New languages are created and old are improved on.. Don't just tie yourself to one language

Loool... If the industry is to conform to oga larisoft's standards.... I dare say 80% of so called programmers may fall short
Re: I Can Code In 75 Languages!!! by Nobody: 8:15pm On Jul 14, 2016
@larisoft, you are speaking from the angle of a code-scientist.

I am speaking from the level of a production manager / businessman. I am primarily a businessman and I am interested in building business applications.
I live on programming, so I always use whatever is scalable and will give me the best result in the shortest possible time.

Namely, if i have a new project and I profile like this:

JAVA - will be best for the language but will take me 3 months to collect
PHP - will be second best but will take me 1 month

I will vote for PHP - so that I can quickly finish my project, cash in and move on with my life.

In my own world, the big big business people are not interested in all those stuffs oga larisoft is saying.

Bragging rights is what you have when you worked on several successful enterprise projects - like me. Not by neatness of codes and all those stuffs.

I write neat, well-documented codes and all that, but as a business-minded programmer - these stuffs are not essential. Whether you use namespaces, procedural, OOP etc is of little importance in the business world - GET THE JOB DONE AND MAKE YOUR CLIENTS/EMPLOYERS HAPPY.

Maybe my very long years in the field have changed my perspective like this. At the beginning, I use to believe in writing all these neat codes and all those things.

The employers are concerned with creativity, portfolio and all those kind of things. Ability to work with teams and all those kind of stuffs.
Creating user-friendly applications.

There are some very excellent programmers on nairaland, but some of them, the user-friendliness of their applications are utter rubbish, and as far as I am concerned, this affects productivity.
Because end-users are not concerned about code neatness and all those kind of stuffs.

You understand the drifts that I was talking about. In the course of my programming career, I have had to learn over 15 languages in total due to these kinda stuffs.
Some of those languages i learnt back then are of no use again in this generation because as the internet evolves, new languages come out and you need to learn.
Re: I Can Code In 75 Languages!!! by sleepingdemon: 8:24pm On Jul 14, 2016
looking at larosift's comment, im sure 90% of programmers including me that i claimed to have ported from c# cant write windows form from scratch with notepad...
That said, i wholehaterdly support your comment for the first time publicly.
about that, yes some of us are bad with gui/html interfaces, it never looks fine without the input of a front end designer.
talking about knowing 75 or 100 languages, leave all those jokers alone, they are the real trolls.
but like dhtml18 said, the key is being productive with whatsoever language you are using.
a very productive person in vb.net beats someone who claims to write c and has not even a calculator to boast of.
although i understand some of us cannot boast of most of this projects we do as they are for organizations/clients who do want it disclosed.
anyone who honestly writes more than 4 languages in his cv as expert is honestly joking.

I know that there are people out there who brag that they know up to 7 languages but barely realy know Just 3....There are also others who claim they know up to 7 languages and truly they know and are masters of it ... Don't judge others by your standard... Not because your brain can't accommodate so much doesnt mean others brain can't do so

Leave people to brag.. By their fruit we shall know them

Finally... Na belle we dey find.... Most Companies out der don't care if you have read clean code, design patterns, etc and implement their designs, procedures and suggestions in your app. They mostly ask for a portfolio of projects you've been involved in. At the end of the day. U writing an app from scratch in the old notepad editor doesn't even matter to them. I guess those abilities only count to renowned and seasoned software bodies like silicon Valley, Google, etc.... Nd maybe in programming competitions... Little wonder u'll come across seasoned developers who have built major apps but yet can't write the fizz buzz program or even sum up the elements of an array.... But finally... Na belle we dey find....

What's all fuss about KNOWING a language. If you are good in one and can work with another then learn as you go , leverage on your previous experience. After all isn't it the same concepts.

Well, who can tell me my top three best languages merely by looking at this code?
Note: I purposely didn't comment my code

<?php
class language {
var $language;
function __construct( $new_language ) {
$this->language = $new_language;
}
function get_language() {
return $this->language;
}
function set_language() {

}
}
$lang_array = [
'JavaScript' ,
'PHP' ,
'Java' ,
'Ruby' ,
'GoLang' ,
'Python' ,
'Haskell' ,
'C#'
];
$first_real_lang = new language( $lang_array[1]) ;
$second_real_lang = new language( $lang_array[0]) ;
$third_real_lang = new language( $lang_array[5]) ;
?>
<button id="button" onclick="showLangs( this,'langDiv' ) ; ">Click To Show My Languages</button>
<div style="display:none;" id="langDiv">
<?= "My major most used languages are: <b>".$first_real_lang->get_language()."</b>,
<b>".$second_real_lang->get_language()."</b> and <b>".$third_real_lang->get_language()."</b>.";?>
</div>
<script type='text/javascript' >
window.onload = function() {
var r = confirm( 'You are about to find out what my major languages are, are you sure you want to proceed?' ) ;
var host = 'http://localhost/' ;

if ( r == false ) {
window.location = host;
}
}
function showLangs( h, d ) {
var t = document.getElementById( d ) ;
if ( t != "" ) {
t.style.display = "block" ;
t.style.padding = "10px" ;
t.style.width = "450px" ;
t.style.backgroundColor = "#2980b9" ;
h.style.display = "none" ;
}
}
</script>

15,000k if you get it in 5mins10secs
Note: Beginners only grin

Copy the code and save it then preview it on your browser to find out.
