theEYe21: And what is the governor doing? You Nigerians...one minute you want true federalism, the next minute you want Abuja to do everything for you. That is how people were blaming GEJ for not giving otueoke potable water....as if there is no governor or LG chairman. 25 Likes 2 Shares |

On a more serious note...this problem started a long time ago (Grab the popcorn kids....time for another Tales with QT). In the 1970's/...government took over many mission and private schools, and built new ones all over the place....because we could. (Oil prices were high and we had enough money to meet our needs, and pay the salaries of workers in some Carribean island no one heard of). As a result, today, many states have too many schools to look after. Of course, the money is not enough to go round (and corrupt termites of the human kind are busy swarming around to take their bite). Meanwhile....fees are kept low, meaning that schools do not have an alternate source of funding. So, we have schools starved of cash and principals often have to resort to funny ways to raise cash (WASSCE processing fees anyone?). In 2009....Oby Ezekwesilli, then Minister of Education, tried to get unity schools run as some sort of PPP. We told her to go and rest, that we were too poor to pay fees. Some governors also handed schools back to the mission owners, saying that they did not have the cash to take care of them....and there were street protests. Schools need money. Many good (not the mushroom ones) private schools provide desks, chairs, etc for their students because fees are sky high (at N100000 and above in some cases). Many government schools...like the Bauchi ones cannot afford desks for their students because funding is low and fees are kept low for the masses. Nigerians...espeically Bauchi residents....if you want the students to sit down on chairs....you have to find the money for it. Either we all pay 50% of our salary (like the Danes) as tax, or we pay higher school fees , either at primary level. Or we make all universities private, and use the money saved for primary schools. Or we become an industrial society...so that we can earn enough money to have budgets of N20trillion and above....with N5 TRILLION at least for education. Education is not cheap. We have no choice. 16 Likes 3 Shares |

Op, that is the normal thing here in the north. Education is an eye sore even here in Sokoto where I serve. Schools like these belong to the poor, the elites children don't school in Nigeria at all. The painful aspect is they substitute religion for education. Here in Sokoto, we have Big and Beautiful Mosques with full Air Conditioners, Big and well furnished Islamic and Arabic school with Toyota Coaster buses but poorly funded Western schools. The Islamic library/lab in my school is well treated yet the school has no money to buy drawing board for construction in Mathematics. The students have Arabic textbooks yet they don't have English textbook yet they expect me to teach them Comprehension passages this term. I have over 120 students in one of my classes meant for around 30. The students don't even have any other future ambition than to marry and work in the ministry. 8 Likes

We really have a long way to go when it comes to education in the northern part of Nigeria. Ironically, they're the most active in the corridors of power and economy. Read all about big aunty O here http://www.amaraofficial.com/2016/03/how-can-i-help-her-experience-orgasm.html |

It's really sad. Successive govts at all levels have shown that they have little or no interest in or priority for education. Come to OAU, "Africa's most beautiful campus", and see 700 students or more in a lecture hall meant for less than 300 students. Students receiving lectures at the Sports centre, etc Some "model schools" are so terrible, and u wonder what is 'model' about them. Yet, governors and presidents parade themselves like they've totally turned the state of education around. |
