You can try higher viscosity oil first. If you used 5W-30 last, you can try 5W-40 or 20W-50 depending on how heavy the smoke is.
Alternatively, you can add a can of oil treatment to your current oil & see if there's any improvement. Note that some people discourage its use saying that it causes engine sludge.

Did u said top up if the level is low? That's not good idea cos something contributes for the low level. My question is ,what of changing different type of oil @ different time.Assume I was using Total before and later change to some other oil does it affected the engine performance?

Many thanks for this piece. I have a problem with my car, golf 4. It always shortens oil to almost half if gauged before a journey of about 300-350kms. I have asked for it to be checked by servicing personnel and no seemingly answer has come from them. The Car runs well, with no black shoots, water still comes out from exhaust, no leakages of oil under the bottom plate. I have to be constantly topping it to avoid it burning out the remaining oil in the engine. What could be wrong with the car? I will appreciate your response.
